Its bad enough people treat beta tests like demos, making beta invites a pre-order bonus with an unrelated product seems like a terrible practice. I always hate those tards that run around knocking an MMORPG because "I was in the beta." Big fucking deal.

Its something you volunteer to do because you're interested in helping the developer refine the game and work out problems it has. These kinds of games are so large and ambitious that the developer can't always nail down the loads of potential problems that can occur.

People RARELY beta test, they just play the game. Back in the day you tested and you reported, nowadays you just play and bitch. And usually public beta tests, like what I said about bundling with FF13, aren't really true beta tests in the way you and I remember. They are more server load tests, true beta testing has gone the way of the dinosaur.

But how do you get into closed betas? especially for this? I tried to beta forFFXI but I forgot what happened exactly.. I think I signed up for it in a gamepro magazine or something??? I dont remember..

you rarely get to sign up for closed betas, you get invited to them, as in getting a key from being a long time forum poster, or preordering, things like that.

Open Betas are what you can just sign up for and get into most of the time.

Ah ok.. I remember signing up for 11s closed beta though.. I just didnt get picked so wasnt sure if thats what they were doing again with 14.

Well you need to keep up on the latest info by keeping tabs on several different gaming forums. People will post the latest info usually so you'll know where to go and what to do. If you get lucky, someone might have an extra test code and offer it but thats rare. It's more likely nowadays for people to sell extra codes which annoys the hell out of me.

Basically you either get chosen from having registered with the company beforehand (sometimes normal membership newsletter type accounts), enter in a contest hosted by a sponsor, or fill out an app during the game's beta registration process and hope you get chosen.

No, they have not released that information yet.

If I were to hypothesize on it I would say that they want to start at least 6 months before release. Since they said they were releasing in 2010, the latest to start, according to my idea, would be around June. I doubt they would release in Dec though so I'd say more like Sept or Oct release which would mean a March/April publicl start timeline. So application time will probably be Jan/Feb/March about. Remember that FF13 releases in April so thats why I go with a later start date for FF14. I highly doubt that they will release them too close to one another. They don't want people going "well I can afford one so which one should I get..."

This will help encourage sales of FF13 and idk about the rest of you but I greatly dislike the idea of the beta testers being drawn randomly out of a hat. I just hope it goes the way TGM said with 13 out in April, and then the beta starts with the game shipping in 4th quarter 2010 which hopefully will give me enough time to finish up with FFXI.

oh, as much as I want to beta test I it I hope it doesn't get packaged with 13. Both the husband & I play 11 and I wouldn't want to have to arm wrestle him for the beta, and there would be no other reason to get 2 copies of 13. I wouldn't pay for 2 copies of it either, so it would bring unhappyness to our household. Even if they allowed multiple characters (do beta's normally? I've never beta'd a MMO) neither of us would want to wait while the other got to play. lol

I think FFXIV will come sooner than Q4 next year. Q3 the latest. especially considering they will most likely start the closed beta test sometime this year. and that shouldn't last more than 6-8 months.
