The thing about XI is that you need to organize your life around the game (or more exactly around your LS's schedule) if you want to get most of the good items/quests/mission in the game. That left casual players out from most of the good stuff, even though casual players are the biggest part of the population.

The way I see it all players should have access to all items and be able to complete all quests/missions in the game regardless of how much time they can dedicate to play each day.

To do so SE only needs to make it so party play makes things much easier and faster, to encourage (NOT force) people to actually interact with each other. While still allowing casual players to access the same items/activities, albeit slower.

Example > Say you want to get a Relic weapon. A LS/guild would probably be able to get one for you in 9 months, while soloing you would need year and a half to obtain it.

Halving the time required to get that kind of items would be more than enough to encourage players (who are able to) to simply join a LS/guild, while allowing those who are unable to due to lack ot time or irregular schedules to still have access to those items in the game.

Dynamis = the worst concept in an MMO ever. If there's ever been something more stupid, I don't want to know about it. "Okay, so we'll give players these weapons that require over a year to attain, a bajillion gil and 63 friends willing to forfeit their chance at a weapon for one person's sake and they can all take turns at it each passing year." Fuck that. I wonder just how fewer relics there would be in circulation right now had the inflation era never occurred.

maybe relics should be a sword in the stone type deal.

you go on an instanced alternate dimensional journey for a stone, and when you get there, you crack it open to free the crystal, and the crystal grants everyone a relic of their choosing.

FFT didn't have that many really. Actually it's around the same number as XI has now. FFTA-2 on the other hand, is supreme overkill with somewhere around 50 jobs I think?

And yes, Relics really are that bad. No item should take years of grinding a horrendously long and boring event every 3 days and at the expense of others to obtain. Most (if not all) relic owners either started their own shell and used people to get theirs, or got ridiculously wealthy from hording gil during the inflation era. The rest likely just play the HNM/ZNM etc. scene and sell drops for ludicrous sums of money. I know this one taru talked about over at BG (forget his name LOL) who has like *seven* relics and funds them by selling Herald's Gaiters and using the people in his shell to get them...

I wouldn't be surprised if the skill system on XI worked like a mix between the License and Sphere Grid systems.

We know we'll have certain trademark weapons open the paths for the different jobs associated to them. So what I think is along the lines of being able to equip different skill sets (read switch job spheres) that would evolve separately in a License kinda way; where you could select which abilities to put gained skill points to level up next, which in turn would open other abilities/spells/etc. with some crossovers along the way.

Disclaimer : I'm aware these jobs are from XI, but you get the idea:

                            Sword: RDM PLD BLU etc.

                            Dagger: THF DNC RDM etc.

Staff : SMN BLM SCH etc.

                            CLUB : WHM PLD etc.

PS > The idea of having a single "Let's go to the Wizard of Oz!" kinda long epic quest to gain Relic weapons sounds pretty good on paper, but how do you deal with people dropping out of the party or who simply stop caring about it?

The solution looks very Dynamis to me. >_<

That could be very viable. I am going to be going to college for game deisigning soon, and I have TONS of game ideas that will run off something like this.

Every weapon has a skill level that you must reach with it in order to use its spell or ability. Say, you want to use Cure, but still want to use a sword. Get staff up to level 5, and then level sword up to llevel 7, and there ya go! You can now cast cure! Of course. Theres lots more to it than that though.

                              But back on topic...

I would LOVE to see a game that would use that design that you have posted. I played a game that had a design simular to that, but it was way differnt. If you used a sword, and a shield, you where a defender. If you used an Axe, offensive, ect...

The key to relic quests is finding a suitably lengthy adventure to keep them hard and rare, without requiring a simple grind (currency collecting), massive involvement of other players (last couple stages), and generally boring or frustrating.

Even something of COP's difficulty and length wouldn't be quite enough to justify a relic weapon.
