there will be a site for it, I'm sure, just like any other mmorpg out there. it might be too early for a forum, we know the surface of the information but not enough to really get waist deep with how it works. a speculation topic is sufficient for now.

but ya I agree, the good thing of good soloing options is that it gives people that are screwed without a party, a means to keep getting decent XP and leveling up without needing to place any more risk than a party does fighting an IT.
Ya parties will always get XP faster and less downtime, but still, they should be more generous with XP and capabilities to beat a decent mob for soloers.

    ALSO,

if FFXIV has a more useful search system for needy people, then people that like to help that "can" help them, would be aware of their situation and they would get help sooner.

Beause the whole mentor system is not all that useful. more people need help coming to them, not the other way around (needy people who ask Mentors who end up being most likely busy at the moment anyway.)

If I didn't "/sea all 17-19" and saw a 19 without a subjob, and if I didn't ask them if they needed help with subjob items, they would have not gotten their subjob that day. They thanked me after it was done.

A good search option and flag option that helpers and the needy can use to find each other, without having to go down
every possible list and zone and reading people Comments for clues to what they might need help with (if they need help at all), would save people the trouble of needing to shout in towns for help as much, and get things done sooner
based on the people that are seeking people to help.

there should be a worldwide search system that lets people flag themselves for needing some emergency help
(quest, mission, LB, SJ, Raise, etc. etc.) That would really improve things quite a bit within the community. Because
as things are now, there is a thick fog between helpers and the needy.

Quoted for truth. I was a bit annoyed that I couldn't hyphenate Tamar-Samar. Still, I just hit the random-name generator a couple of times to see how Tarutaru Male PCs were supposed to arrange their names, and just arranged Tamarsamar that way. Nowadays, though, I often forget that that hyphen was even supposed to be there in the first place.

      • Re: E3 2009: FINAL FANTASY XIV Online Coming in 2010

I actually don't care if there are group (read: 3 or so people) things in the 'epic' story, as that makes a sort of sense to me, and LotRO doesn't have a solo storyline, either. (Though Feba does make an excellent point on the matter.) What makes it feel more distinctly focused than anything I personally felt in XI was more in the quest dialogue, not the fact that you could solo the mission. Basically the way the books were laid out, they started solo, had some story/solo fight quests following the intro, then worked up to a finale that was 6 man. Some had more party quests, some had none, but they were spread throughout more or less evenly.

I do hate the idea of being barred from finishing some stories just because I can't get a group for something though. We were stuck on Book 6 for a very long time, and it was starting to get highly annoying, as I wanted to just see how it ended, and couldn't even do that because you needed not only a full group, but a rather specific set up and competent players and we all know how well that works with PUGs. And while my kin is large, being on an EU server while living in the US makes obvious time constraints to making 'playdates' for things like this. As I've said before, the game has places where you can 'break' the gating and skip on, and come back later to what you missed if you like, but I'm OCD and hate doing that even when I can. But at least having the option there, maybe I would've seen more of XI's stories than I did. As it was, I haven't been part of a large LS in well over 3 years, and all my friends have moved on. I'm not willing to PUG past Promies. I got extremely lucky there in that it went smoothly. Even with the dumbing down, people tend to fuck up royally and come unprepared.

As to why play a MMO solo: I can't speak for others, but for me, it's a combination of many factors. I bore easily and like to be able to afk at will. I like to explore and wander. I like to RP. I like to take my time. I'm prone to chronic migraines. They come on suddenly and are evil. Medicine does little for them as they're triggered by massive TMJ problems that I can't afford surgery to fix. Lying on this pillow I found for neck problems helps but people want their precious fucking replacements and every minute that passes is one step closer to it becoming a 12+ hour ordeal rather than a few hour migraine. The customization of your character is something you don't get in many games outside of an MMO unless you play ES games, or a few other handful of PC games. I like to have people to chat to, help, etc, but I don't necessarily want to be forced to rely on them to progress through the game. Lots of things. All boil down to: I want to be able to get in, play, progress and not feel as if I'm dragging through it at a snail's pace, and get out quickly without problems if the need arises.

As for policing: no one on Laurelin cares if you RP or not, so long as you don't grief those who do. The naming policy is part of the TOS of the game itself, however. Your name has to fit the 'tone' of the world. Not necessarily comprised of pre- and suffixes from Tolkien's languages, but it has to sound fitting in the world of Middle-Earth or it can -and will- get changed if it's reported. It's more lax on the non-RP servers, but on the RP ones it's heavily enforced and I'm glad for it. All this info is available to them before they start, so it's not as if they weren't warned. The other 'policing' is nothing more than making known who is a douchebag and who is not. The LRPA was a massive over-alliance of every large (and a very large portion of the small) RP and even non RP kinships on Laurelin. Not only was it good for getting large events together, but there was lots of contact between the leaders and officers about people and kinships to be avoided. (Hispanea rises to mind. There was another whose name I've forgotten but they're both avoided like plague.) So no, it's not a community that takes to shit well, and if it's not stuff GMs can really do anything about we just take care of them ourselves by getting their name out and making sure no one respectable would go within twenty feet of them ever again, and they're left having to move servers or cajole who they can into helping them in endgame. And when the riff-raff who ran from things like that on other servers transfers over, we generally have warning from the server they left, as well. I've seen something similar in the XI community on some forums, so I know this isn't unique to LotRO.

I can't speak for the non-RP servers as my time (and patience) was limited. I had one character to around 16, got annoyed with the insipidity and noise and went back to Laurelin to poke on those alts instead.

In any case, massive derail and shit. I think I would like an option to flag up for needing help/available to help. I got the mentor thing on Telera and often turn it on and stand around starter zones if I'm bored and looking to help out and still get nothing. The few times I've helped someone out with something has been because I asked them or happened to be nearby when they attempted it. I'd be all up for a massive revamp to the Mentor system.

        • Re: E3 2009: FINAL FANTASY XIV Online Coming in 2010

I threw in my towel two days ago. I just wanted to say "Thank you FFXI for the good times, the bad times, but not so much the 3 years I spent LFP."I know it was still a bit to early to quit, but I'm busy with a lot of RL stuff atm (not necessarily walking my dog 24/7....ahem), not to mention I have titles like Wolverine, Fable, Fallout, and so on sitting on my shelf, neglected. This break will be let however get some much needed first person shooter out of my system (what if being a RNG or COR job in FFXIV was actually a FPS job? Just imagine.. Anyways, I'll speculate and hope with the best of you guys until the FFXIV release date. I'll actually be scheduling my vacation time next year around the release date. (That will give me one solid month...)Some changes that I'd love to see however:A revamped medicine/food/drink system. The potions and ethers were a joke. Especially at there price. Even the status removal items didn't do justice for what they were worth. The food needs some altering. I don't mind the fact that you can't see some of the hidden effects...but if there was some sort of in game book that allowed us to see the stats of food that was visible stored somewhere, like in your mog house, it would be a great reference to go back to and avoid us having to do some guess work.I love the whole RP side of things. OP guards should do more, like aid you when in need. Are slaughter you if they feel encroached upon. A bounty system would be great within the nations, or let's say a person from Bastok does a lot to aid there country in conquest. It should make Windurst want to put a bounty on this persons head. With more bounty on you, you get more quests and also others will get more gil for your death. It would be a good PvP concept. Also, more emphasize on the nations and unity would be excellent. Someone shouldn't switch nations just because X has control of this OP this week. Give us pride, give us untiy, give us an all out War mode without the Ballista dicking around. The fame system was broken. Money should never buy fame. A cap should of been put on the bat wings and cornettes. The AH was great, but selling to the NPC was gimp. RMTs would have never excelled if there was a higher NPC unit value for items. I'm sorry, but my Plastron is worth how much........Timed-pops. Get rid of it More item specific NMs. Say you need a stack of tails, 7 skins, and a few eggs, maybe a rare item to boot to spawn LL instead of this huge time sink with a non guaranteed drop. Time pops were lazy on SE's end.More character detail options. Finally, an Xbox 360 platfrom please

I did not see this posted, but to be honest... I stopped at page 16 ;p

if it was posted already, I apologized, but if not, enjoy, this helps with some of the random "I thinks" or "I wonders" that I have seen in this thread.

FFXIV Q&A Conference transcript | Random Ranting | Limit Break | Game On!

Q: What are the ties to Final Fantasy XI, if any?
            11:58
A: While you may have noticed that some of the same type of races appeared in the trailer, the world of FFXIV is different from FFXI. The reason that we made the races similar to the FFXI races is so FFXI players could choose a similar type of race in the new game. For example, in movies, you might have an actor that plays many different roles. Please, think of it that way.
            11:59
Q: What happens to Final Fantasy XI now that we're moving to FFXIV? Are you going to phase it out or continue to publish new content for XI? How will the development team be split?
            11:59

XIV does not take place in Vana'diel.
            12:00
A: The development for FFXIV started 4 or 5 years ago with primary ideas. Development started a few years ago, while FFXI was still being supported. FFXI will continue to be supported. There is another year of content planned. There are no plans for the near future to stop development on FFXI.
            12:01
Q: What influence have games like World of WarCraft have on the development of FFXIV?
            12:02
A: As with WoW, we want to aim a bit for the casual user. However, we don't want to make a copy of WoW. We believe we will have things that are unique and will stand out from that game.
            12:02
Q: Will combat be more action oriented or turn-based?
            12:02
A: We cannot talk about the battle system at this time.
            12:03
Q: FFXI has evolved a lot over the years, especially in the areas of player accessibility and the ability to solo. Will you carry over features like level sync and other features to FFXIV?
            12:04

A: Yes. All of the knowledge and experience we gained from FFXI will be used in the development of FFXIV. At the launch, we intend to have content for solo players as well as large-scale battles. We want a wide-variety from the start.
            12:04
Q: Are you planning a simultaneous worldwide release or will it be released in Japan first?
            12:05
A: Yes. At the launch, this will be a worldwide simultaneous launch on PS3 and Windows PC. English, Japanese, German, and French versions released at launch.
            12:05
Q: Will all servers be worldwide or split by territory?
            12:07
A: The current plans are to have worldwide servers that are cross-platform and cross-region. We will do a beta test and look at the balance and player experience. We want to look for a good balance between region and cross-region play.
            12:07

            There's your beta!
            12:08
Q: Will you be taking feedback from your FFXI users?
            12:08
A: Yes, we still get a lot of feedback from our FFXI players and will continue to take feedback as we move into beta. The game will change as it goes.
            12:09
Q: Will you try to move players from XI to XIV or will they be separate communities?
            12:09
            (I'm on my laptop + 3G now ;\ )
            12:10
A: It's up to the community themselves. We envision users that will hopefully play XI one day and XIV another. They will be independent, but users are free to play both.
            12:10
Q: Are there plans to localize the game in Spanish?
            12:11
A: Currently, there is no Spanish version in development. We'll consider it if enough Spanish-speaking users demand it from us. Getting good translators in Japan is hard, but if there's enough demand we will consider it.
            12:11
Q: How can users transmit this demand?
            12:12

A: We will conduct marketing research.
            12:12
Q: Is there any special element in the MMO genre that you will improve with this game?
            12:13
A: Our plan from the beginning was to make the best Final Fantasy game available. That is our vision for XIV. Then we thought, how can we make the best FF game and we came to the conclusion that it would be an MMORPG. It was decided to make the best FF first, then led to the decision to make it an MMORG and use that genre.
            12:13
A: However, we are trying to implement a lot of new systems that other MMO's haven't used in the past.
            12:14
Q: Why did you decide to make a new game rather than continue to evolve FFXI?
            12:16
A: It all comes down to, originally, FFXI was designed for the PS2. It then moved to PC and Xbox 360. A lot of people have asked for a port to the PS3. With an MMORPG of this size, you have to develop new content. Porting to a new technology would take a lot of effort. Instead, we decided to use that time to make something new.
            12:17
Q: Yesterday's trailer that was shown, was that running of a console or was it pre-rendered?
            12:18
A: There were parts that were pre-rendered and parts that were running on the in-game engine.
            12:18
Q: Is that the quality you're aiming for? The scene with the Galka fighting, is that what you're aiming for?
            12:19
A: Yes, that is the part that was running in-engine.
            12:19
Q: In that scene, we saw many parties and many enemies. Is this the new focus: many parties fighting many enemies?
            12:20
A: I cannot say too much, but we hope to have battles that are many vs. many and many vs. one.
            12:20
This is a Q&A for FFXIV, not a press conference. It was added at the last minute. FFXIV will be the only title discussed.
            12:20
Q: What would you like to emphasize with this game? What is different from FFXI?
            12:21

We're asking questions, but they are currently going through the international and Japanese press.
            12:22
A: For FFXIV, the keyword that we've been using is "The Growth and Development of the Character." We will have the same type of storytelling and high-quality graphics. We also want to expand and create new in-game systems. The player can grow & develop in a more natural way without putting too much weight on the player. We will expand the job system to make it fairly different from the one in FFXI.
            12:23

A: Another very important concept that takes a different direction from FFXI, for FFXIV we want to make it so the player can choose to play solo, in a party, 40 minutes, all-day... there will be content for ALL of those play styles and systems for all of those play styles.
            12:24
Q: On the beta process, will current XI players get in?
            12:25
A: As with the actual release date of the game, we don't have a concrete beta schedule yet. We will have a beta and look forward to more information about then shortly.
            12:25
Q: Will FFXI characters be portable to XIV in any way?
            12:26
A: The game is completely different. There will not be any XI character transfers to XIV. However, the character design is familiar and XI players will be able to create a similar character.
            12:26
A: We will NOT be using PlayOnline, but friend lists will transfer over.
            12:27
Q: If I'm new to the MMO genre, why would I choose FFXIV over other games?
            12:27
A: We believe that players will fall in love with the world & story that we have created.
            12:31
Q: I've been seeing information that the title is free to play, is this true?
            12:31
A: No pricing has been decided at this time. It is still TBD.

Now they decide to use FFXIV for a Natal project.....Haha, could you imagine tanking for 3 hours straight with shield and sword movements, or trying to get a Cure IV off using specific arm movements? That is truly an RPG there. Haha.

We discussed something like that on vent once, only mentioning the Wii. One of our Dynamis pullers said "Fuck that, can you imagine how exhausted I'd be after pulling Dynamis? All I do is shoot stuff and run like hell. Shit would suck!"

Would be exhausting, but bet I'd be a lot thinner. XD

hmmm. not sure. It doesn't seem to have that "united city" vibe Jeuno had going for it. It looks technologically Cid-like,
the Hume settlement? probably not. it's too metallic and industrial for my taste. It might be just some research or observatory thingy. or maybe it's just one zone that's linked to the actual city? There seems to be no signs what it's used for. And no expansive section that would be used for housing. It seems like it's a place where people work or transport stuff, but, what could it be used for?

the hume city better not be some stony settlement in the middle of some rocky region again. the Flintstones we are not.
Bastok is really the galka hometown. Jeuno is really the humes town, but we technically own the galka town too. :p
why do elvaans and tarus get all the nice grassy vistas...

The city in their tech demo was just that. A tech demo. All it was made for was to show off and test their new game engine. The city shown most likely has no connection to FFXIV.

And the video of the sony conference where they reveal FFXIV makes me laugh. They're so excited and then when they see "online" appear, they seem disappointed. They also say "what?" too much! D:

they didn't sound disawhatever, they were just puzzled and total newbs, but they accepted FFXIV anyway, they really sounded
like they'll give it a try when it arrives. But you know if the announcer didn't foolishly spoil the trailer before showing it to the crowd (like just mentioning it's a new FF and just shut up after that and let the video roll), I think the reaction would have been much louder after they see the logo and number the first time.

anyways ya you're right it's a tech demo, so ya that city/whatever may just be an experiment with how complex they can make the environments and other stuff. but it still gives an idea, even though its from two years ago.
