Is any one else really hoping that the game starts out on that boat in the teaser? The jelly fish attack and it launches into a tutorial!

That giant sea monster trashes your boat and you wash up ship wrecked on a small instanced beach to finish the tutorial. Then you step out into the global server zone and in the distance you see a massive port city. Eorzea's version of Jueno.

I guess one of their focus on character growth being natural, means that they are also gonna make a more customizable character creation system? I wonder how the faces and hairstyles there will be to choose from, and how they will look and
how customizable the front and back can be. Since they are improving lots of things, I imagine the character creation will be a leap above what there was before. I'm really interested in how the Humes look now in-game based on the art direction by one of my favorite artists ever, and how that artstyle will translate into 3-D. ya we seen "Galka" in-game but I'm a Hume fan so I wanna see the whole selection, well at least some in-game examples for now! :D

I also wonder about how the clothes system will work. They can really revolutionize the atmosphere in FFXIV if the garments have more variety and detail and stuff.

Oh man, I really hope the character customization is top notch. I -hate- looking like everyone else. I hope its intense, kind of like it was in Phantasy Star Universe in a way. I want to give my Galka a mohawk lol. (Yes, I'm a galka now and will play a galka again just cuz they fkn rool..... and so I can eat tarutaru for breakfast.)

One thing I thought was really cool was that the trailer kind of shows a Leviathan like monster. Have you ever noticed that seems to be a recurring theme with SE (which is kinda cool?) Leviathan was used in a trailer in FF7 that I remember and in FF8 (that playable demo.) I'm not sure if Leviathan appeared in 9, 10, 11, or 12 (that I remember) but that is just kinda cool. Kinda like how they always bring back Cid in every game.

Wonder what Cid is gonna look like. Maybe he'll be a GALKA THIS TIME XD lollerskates

Try having four WHMs in the ls with the same character model. We're never all WHM at the same time, but shit gets confusing sometimes.

LOL I missed that sentence and I was just getting ready to say "Oh you want it to be like Phantasy Star Online then?"

I also hope that they have good customization for the characters.

It'd be even funnier if they tossed in Final Fantasy character haircuts. I know the 1,000,000,000 Variations of Sephiroth running around on all the servers would really be happy.

They could even throw in extra body stances and what not so all the races could have a little originality in the way they stand. And can we not all die and land the same way every time pl0x

That's really my biggest hope for this game. Just some sort of increased character customization. With the PS3, there's no reason to not have slide bar customization or even just mix-and-match features and coloring. Though to be honest, my FFXIV character will most likely look a LOT like my FFXI character. It seems I always end up having a similar looking guy in the MMOs and stuff I play.

Also, clothing should be purely for looks while armor and stat boosts should come from magical gems or something. It worked great in PSU (one of the few good things about that game) and it would rock in FFXIV.

                    Edit:

But it's hilarious watching a group of 20 people all coming out of Dynamis and collapsing on themselves in a neat little pile and you know it!

SE was using an analogy when they mentioned actors, Feba's fate is yours to decide. You said you aren't concerned with stat, equipment, and game play transfer so it seems to me like you want SE to make your personal experience with Feba cannon or official to the story line.

I don't see why that is necessary. You already made up a scenario where Feba is drawn through a portal into the world of Eorzea. Why can't that be your official role play? I've never played an MMORPG where you start anywhere but in your characters adult hood with the past completely up to you.

Have you heard of Quantum immortality? Where infinite parallel worlds exist, but only one subjective consciousness? What if during WotG while Feba was traveling through time, his soul was so strong that some form of destiny called out to him, and after he had done all he could for Vana'diel he was incarnated on Eorzea. The same Feba, but with a parallel body.

I don't know, I'm not trying to convince you to play XIV, but if XIV interested me and it was dearly important that my character stay with me through each Final Fantasy RPG, I would make up a role play like that.

Try not to get to angry about a hobby, its probably bad for your health-- and since day 1 of Raptures announcement, SE stated that the new MMO would parallel FFXI, not succeed it. I believe that and while server mergers might take place in FFXI's future the only reason I could see SE going back on their word is another big economic disaster.
1- I'm not angry, and FFXI isn't my hobby anymore. I'm disappointed in SE, but not surprised. I wasn't intending on playing FFXIV without condition, so long as I had my old character, nor have I considered coming back to FFXI in quite a while. The only reason I still come to DIV is because it has the best ratio of things I want to talk about to idiots talking of any place I've seen on the internet, and I know the community. I was interested in FFXIV, but like I pointed out, using the same races but not transferring characters in any form was a horrible idea.

2- Role Playing is nice, and there's nothing wrong with it, but it simply does not happen in FFXI, and SE hasn't provided even the most basic tools for it. You can have official RP support, but SE doesn't. In any case, there's a difference between two different things, even if cosmetically similar. If I killed your dog, you would probably not be happy. You probably wouldn't feel any better when I brought you another one that looked and acted exactly the same, because however much it seems the same on the outside, you know it is not your dog.

3- Going back to the above, the actors thing is either horribly translated, or horribly stated. If your character is just an actor, why bother keeping the plot the same within FFXI? Why not have characters from other FFs show up, or have it full of pop culture references that border on copyright infringement, or have quest series where all of the characters are moogles. If the character is just RANDOMPROTAGONISTX instead of a Vana'dielian adventurer, why not put all of these things in FFXI, since the plots would still presumably be entertaining. As long as you say "oh, it's not the same world", you can do anything you want plot-wise. It's an even weaker cop-out than saying "it was all a dream".

SE doesn't want to have character transfers or references in FFXIV. That's unfortunate, but there's nothing I can do about it. I'm not buying the game, I'm not playing it, and I never really intended to. I was interested in it, and they lost my interest. I like Vana'diel far more than I ever liked FFXI, and it was the chance to return to Vana'diel that caught my interest, not "oh, new FF MMO". They lost my interest by framing the game in a world of Galka, Taru, Mithra, and Elvaan, but not actually being any of those, or related in anyway. That, and judging by many other things SE has been doing of late, I am extremely skeptical of any of their games at this point.

Most of the fun of MMOs for me is watching a world unfold; a game which fails to have a living world quickly gets boring. And yet SE undermined that within seconds of the unveiling of FFXIV. If they have made FFXIV a truly separate world, I would've been interested. If they had made FFXIV the same world, I would be interested. They took the third road, and made it a grotesque hybrid, which I could never see as being truly its own world, and apparently has no canonical links to Vana'diel.

It would be possible for SE to still get me to play FFXIV, but I highly doubt they will do anything incredible enough to overcome such an overwhelmingly poor decision. Announcing there's a link to Vana'diel-- of any sort, even if they don't reveal the nature. An incredible combat system. Single shard. A player-controlled world. I doubt any of these will happen, and I'm unsure if those alone would be enough to justify it. But because of that decision I have lost any interest in following news and discussion on it, so I'm going to be less likely to see any news on it. I wasn't even intending on reading this thread again, and only came back to see if anyone had anything interesting to say about or in response my comments. I have things I enjoy doing far more than reading about games that I don't intend to play because of flaws so fatal they are on screen nearly %100 of the time.

I do have one question. If you people truly don't care about your characters being the same or not, why would you care about whether your FFXIV character looks like your FFXI character? Either you do care, and are just denying it out of fanboyism, or you do not, and the entire purpose of keeping the same races is misguided-- if people do not want the same characters, keeping the same races only serves to distract them from Eorzea. Altana's children do not need to appear in another world if they're unrelated, and if they're just actors, why not have them go to another set?

                          More tidbits!

IGN: E3 2009: Final Fantasy XIV - What We Know

What platforms is Final Fantasy XIV coming to?
Currently the game is confirmed for PlayStation 3 and Windows PC. An Xbox 360 version isn't official, but Square Enix is considering the possibility that it could.

What do we know about the setting and the story?
It takes place on an all-new Final Fantasy world known as "Eorzea." Though it does share some monsters and races from Final Fantasy XI, they're not direct representations and have been altered in multiple ways that make them unique to Eorzea. The similarities in races will allow experienced FFXI players to create a new FFXIV character that looks somewhat comparable.

Does it have a direct connection to Final Fantasy XI?
In some ways, yes it does. Not only does it share the same development team as the FF11, but the game will also allow players to create a character that is similar to their current Final Fantasy XI. Square Enix has also revealed to IGN that it is currently finding a solution that will let you transfer your character's names from FFXI to FFXIV.

On a related note, at the press conference, it was said that FFXI has another year of content planned. Does that mean that after that year is up that FFXI is done with?
No. To be specific, Square Enix has one year of content currently planned but has told us here at IGN that it isn't a mandated end for the series. If fans continue to support the game, then so will Square Enix.

What is the combat system like?
The development team won't say, but it did confirm to us that... Additionally, the heavy team-play aspect of FF11 has been deemphasized, and now exploration and battle is said to be more balanced between solo and team play.

How does the leveling system work?
Square Enix is cagey about how characters advance, but it has confirmed with IGN that growth is not based on experience and that it will work on a different system entirely.

                          What about jobs?
Jobs will return in Final Fantasy XIV, but they will be much different than the job system present in FFXI.

                          How important are the weapons?
Weapons are very important and have a heavy influence on your character and how they succeed in the game world. Square Enix says to look closely at the official FFXIV logo for hints and hidden meanings about how the game will work.

                          What hidden meanings?
Square Enix told us that when it approached Amano to do the logo art for FFXIV, that weapons were very important and to think of the concept of a "wheel." Specifically, a wheel of adventurers that has their weapon in front of them and an exposed backside -- which leaves each adventurer to rely heavily on their comrades and their friends. Let the speculation begin.

Square unveiled the game with a trailer at E3 2009.
                          Anything else about the weapons?
The team let slip to us that choosing weapons for specific tasks one day versus another could affect how your character develops.

How much of the first trailer is in-game versus pre-rendered?
The debut trailer is actually a mixture of real-time in-game footage and pre-rendered wizardry. The combat scene in particular was created using the in-game engine.

What languages will the game available in?
The same as Final Fantasy XI: Japanese, English, French and German. FFXIV will also be released simultaneously in all regions that use those languages.

Will the PlayOnline service be used for FFXIV?
No. Square Enix told us that the reason it is ditching the PlayOnline system is because it was originally meant as an all-in-one solution to house multiple content types. But as PlayOnline has offered less content over the years, the need for the next online Final Fantasy to us PO is moot. Whatever new service (if any) is used, PC and PlayStation 3 users will still be able to play with each other on the same servers, and Square Enix also confirmed with IGN that you can sign in with a universal ID on either system to pick up where you left off if you own both.

                          Who's Working on the Game?
It is produced by Hiromichi Tanaka (Final Fantasy I, II, III, and IX) and directed by Nobuaki Komoto (Final Fantasy IX, XI), with art direction by Akihiko Yoshida (Vagrant Story, Final Fantasy XII) and a musical score from Nobuo Uematsu (Most Final Fantasies ever). Yoshitaka Amano has designed the logo and is pulling additional art duties as well.

Uematsu only did a few tracks in FFXI, how much is he doing for XIV?
Square Enix revealed to IGN that Uematsu will be doing all the music for Final Fantasy XIV and that it will be composed in a range of different styles and genres.

What modern day MMOs have influenced the design and direction of FFXIV?
In addition to the team's original work on Final Fantasy XI, World of Warcraft, Age of Conan and Warhammer Online have been three recent games that have had some pull, but the FFXI community's feedback has been the most important factor in its design.

                          Are Chocobos back?
Yes, they will return. But Square Enix has told IGN that it is looking at using them in a completely different way than they were used in Final Fantasy XI (where they were used as riding steeds).

When is it coming out and when is the beta?
The game will come out in 2010, and after Final Fantasy XIII which is scheduled for spring of the same year. Beta plans are still being finalized, but that the plan is to have a longer beta period than that of FFXI (which had a beta of about 3-4 months).

                            Just thought of a few other things that would be really nice since it's next-gen;

                            1) Viewable accessories and ranged weapons. If I'm carrying a bow and/or cape, I'd like to see them (earrings and rings too)

                            2) Since it's more casual, methinks they're doing away with the EXP loss?

                            3) There's a lot of talk over on the other sites about the possibility of Voice Chat. I'm on the fence on that personally.

Seriously they had better not retry some jank form of what they did in FF2 because "leveling" in 2 was brutally painful.
