    Re: I miss Summoner...

Except I never used my summons (sorry, GFs) when I junctioned them. Did people use them? I mean, Doomtrain, because he was badass, and Shiva when you had to, but um...yeah, I don't think I did any other time. Oh, and Eden, when I needed to go make a sandwich.

I used Doomtrain... to my knowledge, he was the only one that really impacted a battle in ways that the others couldn't. Early in the game, the GFs (you can call them Summons/Avatars/etc... its cool) were useful, but quickly become insignificant compared the the DPS of the main party members. At least in VIII they were more than just cannon fodder *coughffxiicough* and you actually put them to good use over time.

Or they could just bring back Materia, which would be infinitely more fun & make for a very interesting economy. But that will have to wait until the next MMO (if there ever is one lol)

I disagree with the materia idea. After the slap in the face they gave me on Crisis Core, I'm afraid of what SE will think constitutes "Materia" next.

I want to know the exact problems that are wrong w/FF14 that make it a bad idea to introduce pets as a job, instead of the hinting and subterfuge of "THIS GAME IS NOT GOOD RIGHT NOW" types of conversation.

Why exactly would it be bad to introduce summoner's into FF14? What's so horribly wrong with the game?

I'm not playing it because my computer isn't up to par.. and shame on SE for doing that. I like my little single core DELL w/the 2k RAM and stuff..... :/ I'd have to go buy a new 800$ computer just to keep up w/the Jones'. Course', I'll wait for PS3 version, probably sometime next year... (unless it's this summer?)

I am playing the crap out of FF11 because I can't play 14. 11 sure is on its last legs though, you can tell.... its awesome, but I give it maybe a year or two and then it's goin the way of Phantasy Star Online/Everquest Online Adventures..... xD

If you have a PS3 then it's better to play the game there than having to fork over $$$ for a new PC especially if you don't need a new one.

              Regarding the game and "Pets"...

Currently the game allows for soloing as well as group work with the latter having more incentives in place (especially after the last patch) for that kind of play style. This game is an MMO so grouping is encouraged and yet at the same time they don't want to punish those who rather take it slow and can't afford to spend too much time online and yet do not want to see zero progress.

Pets (Beastmaster & Summoners if you're coming from FFXI, Warlocks & Hunters if you're coming from WoW) present challenges to game balance. How would you represent the class & their pets in terms of balance when compared to other classes. Do you try to do what Blizzard did and make it a 80/20 game (80% of the power lies in the hunter/warlock and 20% lies in the pet) or do you try to do what SE did (2 classes that did not play by the rules and were an exception on to themselves with one, Beastmaster, being mostly useless for group work)

The reason this game is not conducive to pet classes is rather obvious. Pet classes would be an abusive exploit to the game. Furthermore, there is no way to transfer the idea in terms of abilities to other classes. For example, you could use sacrifice as another class, albeit not as efficiently and as well as a Thaumaturge, but you're still able to. Pets would be mandatory because of the upside and unless they make them entirely useless for other classes that in itself would pose a problem.

If FFXIV was any other game then they could find a way to squeeze in that mechanic and unique classes attached to the whole concept. As it stands in the game, it's better off without pets than it is with them.

                Re: I miss Summoner...

Thanks. But saying it would be over-powered and an exploit really just generalizes the topic again. I was hoping for more defined elaboration but Oh well, it's ok. I haven't been able to sit down with the game mechanics of FFXIV to really form an opinion, so I'm at a loss unfortunately and was depending on other able-bodied players for their input.

Maybe by the time it's released on PS3, they'll whip out a Caller with Eidolons and make the game that much more interesting.

                  Re: I miss Summoner...

The way SE talks about bringing over more of the traditional final fantasy charcaters to ffxiv, i see summoner being one of those classes that eventually will be coming over. Currently, they are talking about white mage amd paladin in some of the devs earlier posts.

I don't know ... make what you will ... I think it was part of a set of concept sketches that went around the 'net back when the game was still in development.

There is still hope for ye pet fetishers ... :x

retail for reborn is almost here but I did see different forms of carbuncle in the open beta but it seems there was no real "Summoner's soul" but I'm guessing it might be added. I guess it seemed like "caller" with is a weak form of Summoner seen in FF3(japan) but still has lots of support job things.

I don't know what they plan to add next but more of those job soul gems seems very likely...

Edit: found the name of the job I saw- Arcanist

Gives you a good idea of the Summoner abilities in FFXIV. The info mostly comes from datamining.

                                Basically:

                                Arcanist: Carbuncle (DD/Tank)
Summoner: Garuda (Magic DD), Titan (Tank), Ifrit (Physical DD)
                                Scholar: Fairy (Healing/Support)
