Why is it that every mage job in this game has some sort of native spell or ability to recover magic except WHM? What are you thoughts on why SE hasn't awarded this capablity to the main healing job of the game.

Re: Mp Recovery
It's not really true that WHM doesn't have MP recovery tricks. Although it's obviously not useable in every situation, WHM gets Mystic Boon. While BLM's Aspir is easier to apply, it only works against specific targets. Besides that, both get Spirit Taker; while BLM is one skill rank higher than WHM in that department, WHM in general is a lot less fragile in the front lines, and has access to better melee gear (in addition to Hexa Strike.) Both jobs can make use of Sublimation in the absence of a RDM.
But the bottom line probably is that when the game first came out, the devs wanted to place a very strong emphasis on teamwork and cooperation. The idea was for WHMs to depend on RDM and BRD for further MP recovery; at the same time, the WHM could take on the bulk of the healing burden and leave the RDM, BRD and/or BLMs to focus on their specialties.
EDIT: Also, if I remember correctly, /SCH Dark Arts gives WHM a good enough Dark Magic Skill to pull off Aspir as well.Last edited by Armando; 06-17-2009, 10:59 PM.

Devotion (granted works only on others but still counts)
Clear Mind IV
Mystic Boon
Spirit Taker
And best of all, SCH sub. WHM has plenty going for it for MP recovery if you play the job smart. BLM and SMN are another story entirely (though emptying your MP pool on BLM tends to lead to death)

Re: Mp Recovery
The OP says "natively", so mp recovery methods via support job weren't on the table.
Now, to what Mog said, I don't see how having some sort of mp recovery on whm nullifies Rdm and Brd. Please expand your thought.
While I don't think Whm needs a native recovery method I don't think it would break the game.
Lastly, if you are soloing or low manning at level 75 and you are allowed to melee, I recommend Spirit Taker."All of the biggest technological inventions created by man - the airplane, the automobile, the computer - says little about his intelligence, but speaks volumes about his laziness." - Mark Kennedy

Re: Mp Recovery
I think the real question is: "Does WHM need native MP tricks in the first place?" Regen and Flash save a lot of MP in the long run, and /SCH provides further MP savings as well as Sublimation later on if there's no Refresh. BLM is just as reliant on Sublimation/Refresh in EXP as WHM is; even more so these days when a BLM finds it harder and harder to justify his space in an EXP party.

Re: Mp Recovery
Yes boon counts very much, even if it's not applicable in every situation it's still a WHM-native ability. And climbing Nyzul is not hard if you're diligent about it.
And as Armando said, WHM has so many options available to it that if you play the job in a smart manner (and your DD's don't go crazy...) you'll be just fine.
I still envy Izzy over at BG though. The guy's got Mjollnir & Kraken Club and can pretty much merit without ever worrying about his MP because of Mystic Boon spam (He posted a few videos and IIRC on birds he can do over 400 damage boons... that's a lot of MP very frequently)

Re: Mp Recovery
There lies the problem. WHM only has one exclusive MP regen trick (Spirit Taker can be used by any class with a sub that learns it) and it needs to melee for it, something that 99% of parties will never allow a WHM to do. Heck the only time I've ever been able to melee on my WHM in a party is low manning something like a mission or a NM that a WHM/NIN can solo anyway and even then you have to pray that the DDs have /NIN or /DNC so you're not disengaging to rest after a couple of minutes.
And climbing Nyzul is hard when you don't have the luxury of a perma containing people that won't boot you in favour of a SCH or RDM because the BRD whined about having to refresh you a lot. I don't think I've ever made it past the 5th floor on a Nyzul run because permas are so hard to find. Heck pick up groups don't even shout for floor 1-5 anymore and I can name the number of people (including myself) I personally know who need to do 1-5 on three fingers.Rahal Gerrant - Balmung - 188 DRK

Re: Mp Recovery
You should find some experienced people that will get you to at least floor 16. People don't shout for pickup groups from level 1 because the general understanding is that you will always get people who don't know how to do it at level 1. On gear runs, I'm still getting partnered with people who don't know how order lamps operate. That is generally when the fun stops and the frustration begins.
And if anything, people will pick a WHM over a SCH simply because SCH doesn't have Haste. Yes, I thinks that's stupid too. Nyzul really is easy. The only thing that makes it hard is people who don't know how to do it. I mean, I've won floor 100 with 5 people for crying out loud: THF SCH PUP SAM WAR because the DRK d/c on the way in, the PUP sponsored cause he wanted his Nyzul weapon. Yes, we were lucky we didn't get Cerberus, but then we were unlucky one of the DDs d/c on the way in.
The problem you have is simply one of narrow mindedness in other players and that's it.sigpic
