About NPC.

It really depends on a number of factors, in my case having my NPC out more than makes up for the xp loss. I'd say I make around 50%ish more XP most of the times, in some cases more than that.

But it all depends on your job, your NPC's job, player skill, the mobs you are fighting, the SC you have set up, your lvl, etc. etc. etc.

One thing I'd suggest is having all the advanced jobs for your NPC before using it for xp, the starting jobs suck for most aplications, but the advanced jobs work pretty good.

And you gotta pick a job/weapon combo for your NPC that matches your playstyle and the situation if you want it to work. Using your NPC without thinking about all these stuff will more likely than not just gimp your XP and increase downtime.

WHM soloing at 41, I'm not sure about because your Stoneskin isn't very powerful yet. WHM soloing is possible at higher levels with /NIN, Dual Wield II, and Utsusemi/Stoneskin. Recommended targets are Undead (Skeleton-type) and Pots.

A long time in WHM terms is probably not as long as you think. On RDM, I consider 20 minutes a long time to wait since I usually get invites within a few minutes of flagging up--before I finish my search comment and sometimes even with my flag off. WHM at 41 is a hot commodity--if you're thinking in terms of long waits for invites, you should try a DD job that's not WAR (since they seem to be all the rage these days). Most DDs are all grouped together for slots in pt, so instead of fighting with just a handful of people, you're fighting amongst all the DDs (WAR, RNG, SAM, MNK, THF are the non-mp-consuming DDs. DRK, BLU, and BLM are the mp-consuming DDs. DRG gets into the first group earlier on, but after 65 gets thrown into a category of it's own with PUP and BST). A DD can wait several hours before an invite, so you really don't have a reason to complain about 20 or even 40 minutes until you've stepped into the shoes of a DD job.

If you just can't find a party, just duo with someone like a NIN. You can tackle tougher mobs in a duo, and make ok XP as opposed to lousy XP soloing. The only jobs that are any good at soloing for XP are the pet jobs and the versatile melee mages BLU and RDM though they are rather lackluster at high levels since their time/xp ratio is pretty bad and in order to maintain their mp pool, they have to fight pretty low-class mobs--sword, even with good skill, is a pretty slow killer.

... you should try a DD job that's not WAR (since they seem to be all the rage these days).

LFG can be very, very streaky. Last week, I tried LFG on Thursday night. It me (70 WAR) an hour and a half to get an invite. The real kicker? A BRD in my level range was also seeking, and stayed that way for at least an hour. Strange. Very strange.

Once you have stoneskin it is possible to solo ep's, but you have to rest every other one. I killed beetles in ordello's cave with a holy maul and holy breastplate and a circlet that ups evasion (Can't remember the name offhand got it in a windurst quest). I did this to get the keys for my RSE hunt and to skillup club and later staff. I don't advise this for xp as you will wake up screaming from lack of serious xp progress, but it's not bad if your just trying to farm up items where the xp is just a very small bonus.
Here was my spell cycle

Stoneskin, protect, shell depending on target before fight
Cycle Pulling with Slow 1st due to slower casting, paralayze, Dia
Sometimes regen if going badly and timing to get stoneskin back up with less interuptions simular to casting utsemi. Also blink on occasion, when having trouble getting the long casting of stoneskin uninterupted.

I suppose nin sub at a high tool cost could allow you manage without resting after every other fight, but is not cost effective.
Another thing you could do is take a break from whm to let the buildup of healers leveling in your range get ahead of you so their no longer competing for the same pt slot and get your blm up another 5-10 levels or something else if it isn't a blm friendly strech. Maybe even unlock summoner for autorefresh as a sub once your whm hits 50.

I'm curious, why do you need bst to be the same level as your main when subbing it? I don't really know anything about beastmaster, this sounds interesting.

You don't really it's just 40 is where a lot of people like to take subjobs so they'll be usable in up to 40 level caps, BCNM's exc. 37 if your only leveling it to use as a sub, but why not take it 3 levels higher for those caps as long as it's so close.

There is a theory going around that the success rate of Charm when used from (random job)/BST is dependent on the level of one's BST, capped by the current job.

So, roughly speaking, a WHM41/BST75 can charm nearly as well as BST41/(whatever).

Whether this is true or not at higher levels I cannot say from personal experience, but I have duo'ed BST22/WHM with a WHM22/BST before--the WHM22 was as charming to the critters as my PSE. There are many other people's testimony to effectiveness of this solo'ing method as high level THF/BST, etc., so it's reasonable to assume that (job)/BST works at higher levels.

What is not entirely clear (to me) is that when BST is only half as high as the current job's level (e.g. WHM41/BST20) or otherwise less than current job's level (e.g. WHM41/BST30), would Charm still be usable.

Get yourself a holy breastplate and 2 mauls fill up on some Str food and head out to jungar forest or pashow marshlands with /nin and start farming...you should also get small amounts of XP but not nice or godly amounts...its hard but managable to solo as a whm/nin. I'm not tellin you not to by all means enjoy it i know i do ^^
