  • My apologies, SE, for doubting you...

In another post I ranted about how playing WHM is frustrating because we're "weak" against mobs and can hardly do damage against them.

Well, I was wrong. I'm sorry.

Last night, I found a mob where Banish III was hitting for 1000+ damage, non-bursted. I kid you not. I have a 'bard in a panic because he was curing the tank while the white mage was in shock' as evidence to prove it. I think I'm still recovering.

Of course, the first time I saw such a thing as my Banish doing 1000+, I was thinking it had to be some type of fluke (or the world was ending, still up for debate), so we went and tried another. Sure enough, even though the day had just changed from Watersday with it's magic boost for Divine, my Banish III was still doing a consistent 950-980 damage non-bursted. BLMs are probably scoffing at the damage and, OK, I will admit that the mobs were only VT, but for somebody who is used to seeing Banish III doing around 450 damage, this was a pleasant and exciting surprise.

Unfortunately, we couldn't stick around because we had a mission to finish. However we're planning to head back and see what meriting on them is like as the RDM in the group had a similar experience where his magic-burst ended up doing like 1100 damage. He is also trying to recover from shock.

Re: My apologies, SE, for doubting you...

I'm uncomfortable with giving the location because it seems to good to be true, but it's outside the Dvucci Staging Point against the mummy type skeletons (can't remember their name). However, I can't imagine SE making something so weak to magic that a WHM can hit it with a 1000 damage Banish. There has to be a catch somewhere. Hence why we're going to head back and try again.

I'm also going to ask a 75 blm to come along. I mean, if a white mage is hitting it for 1000 magic damage, I can't imagine how much a blm's nuke will hit for. On the other hand, these mobs are very difficult to sleep as both bard and rdm tried and were resisted. Maybe this is SE's answer to encouraging BLMs to play with traditional parties as they need somebody to tank for them and a few more members to control hate.

Like I said though, we only did a sampling of the area (2 mobs) and really want to go back and try again. There was another party in the area pulling the same mobs and there seems to be enough for two parties. Just hope we can find a pld tank willing to help us out.

Hmm well Qutrubs are inherently weak to magic, I think they take double damage, and the Banish series was giving a damage bonus vs undead a few patches ago, so that makes a lot of sense. Pretty cool.

I wonder how much it would be able to do if the WHM had the Cleric's Mitts... I've always wondered how much those enhance Banish vs. Undead.

It's a noticeable increase. I have a pair - haven't really tested them, but both the damage and the defense down effect against undead seem stronger.

The unfortunate downside of Qutrubs (or Lamia Idolaters) is that they have 10-15k HP....

One day while trying to EXP and everywhere was crowded, I tried taking a PT out to Dvucca Isle to try Qutrubs. Their defense is very strange. Sometimes the WAR would hit a 4K Rampage, others he'd only do 500.

They seem to be THF-type mobs that come in BLM or DRK flavor; they triple attack and their evasion is astronomical, but the ones wielding daggers cast BLM spells and the ones wielding swords cast DRK spells. I couldn't remember if they're resistant to silence or if our RDM just sucked, but the BLM ones kept tossing Thundaga III on us and wrecking our PT. The DRK ones were easy to manage--it was just difficult picking them out around the BLMs. Not to mention they are completely immune to sleep and lullaby, so BRD puller was out of the question.

I'm thinking Banish is the key to breaking through their defense and insane HP, but they're just such crappy of mobs to fight, I wouldn't want to try them again.

Yeah, they take double damage, but have double HP.
I think the same applies to Lamia too. Saw an AMII MB for something like 8000 damage.
