  • Having problems with WHM.

Hey there everyone. In FFXI I am curently levelling WHM as a Elvaan male. I just seem to run out of MP all the time though. I want to be better at PT's but I just run out of MP so fast. Is there anything like a foodstuff or a particular piece of equipment that I can get to help get some more MP so I can be more effective in pt's? It is so hard to go out and only be able to cast cureII a few times before I am having to heal myself again. and since ether's are like 4800 a piece, it is hard to justify that.

Ya medicine items are not the way to go, you'll use them mostly in BCNM and similar mission environments.

    Food: http://ffxi.somepage.com/itemdb/food.php
    Gear: http://ffxi.somepage.com/itemdb/adva...ip=1&affect=MP

Now some of it is going to be freakishly expensive (Astral Rings) you really aren't expected to have them on your first job.

Other then that, every Mage has to learn MP management. When you hit 21 Regen will restore HP more efficiently then a Cure will, so use it. Cure is more MP efficient then Cure 2 until your cure 2s approach 70-80 HP restored, so until your healing skill gets high enough for that, stick with casting several cure 1's and save cure 2 for an emergency. Same with the other higher cures as you get them, you will probably will not be casting your highest cures all the time.
I use a Mac because I'm just better than you are.

HTTP Error 418 - I'm A Teapot - The resulting entity body MAY be short and stout.

I would recommend taking up Cooking as well. You can make Pineapple Juice fairly cheap, and it will help you with your MP. I'm an Elvaan RDM, and I went through the Dunes with no subjob, but one thing it does teach you is how to stretch your MP to the fullest. At the time I ate Melon Pies for the MP and the INT, and did well, but I was only backing up the main healer at the time. You may want to look into Rolanberry Pies or one of the various types of Cookies.

Try to put MP in any slot you can afford to, but it's going to be expensive in some slots. Astral Rings would be nice, but are going to be 1M+ and like Mhurron said, that's a huge number for a player who just started playing the game.

As mentioned food and gear will be the best way for you to make you MP pool last longer.

Medicines will be too expensive - and not as effective as using juices for MP refresh effect and pies/mushrooms. The pies will add to your total MP pool and the mushrooms add to how much MP you get back when you are resting. You can also try cookies as well.

If you are around level 20ish - remember Regen is your most MP efficient spell, get it and use it whenever you can on your tank. You will have to become very mindful of how you use your mp.. luckily your MND stats will come in handy as you level when your cures begin to get closer to cap and heal for more.

Look into the Fasting Ring you can get from a popped NM in the Canyon. Its basically a poor man's astral and definitely worth the time and effort. Astrals are nice, but they are more for show than anything if you have the 1mil+ - for that you can get top of the line foods, etc.

Good luck hope you enjoy it.

          Re: Having problems with WHM.

Also, look into getting a Pilgrims Wand. it drops off a NM called Nuynunek or something similar, bird type, that spawns in West Sarutabrauta. it has +2 healing MP, which means MP recovered while resting.

This may be more true of the higher levels than the lower ones, but I will gladly trade 20 MP for +1 healing MP. Cookies are good for healing MP, and cheap, I'm moving on to Imperial coffee at the moment but I'm hearing rumors that it's hMP effect isn't as strong, so I may yet go back.

on the other hand, the coffee lasts for three hours. A smaller bonus that you don't forget to use is worth more than a big (but unused) bonus. If you're going to forget to eat a cookie every other resting cycle, the coffee may just be the route for you.

          *NOTE*

While in RL coffee is rightfully considered a "drink", in this game it is considered a food.

This is important, as it means you can have your coffee (or cookies) which gives you MP recovered while resting, AND juice, which gives you MP recovered ALL the time.

Yes, it was inspired by the Simpsons

You can also spawn an NM sappling in tahrongi who drops a Fasting ring (-20HP +10MP, lvl 15). Not an astral, but it's free ^^

yeah, fasting right, and pilgrims wand are very nice. i also do reccomend taking cooking to atleast 60, when you can make your own yagudo drinks, and its a very handy craft to have at 60 O.o and you can still lvl a craft to100
as for MP+, rolanberry/pumpkin pies give around 50+mp
and, the Ginger cookies are very good too, fast mp healing, and theyre low on cost

As Mhurron said you shouldn't be using Cure II much at all at lvl 16, it's not mp efficient and will get you smacked around by the mob as a fun bonus.

To be honest, this will be difficult to do for someone on their first character who doesn't have a steady income yet, or a quick way of getting around the world.

I guess it depends on how you approach it. I've been leveling cooking (taking it to 60 only), and I've been using all NPC buyable items, or stuff that is ridiculously easy to farm. It's been very cheap. I have the path listed in my journal actually.

Which means you're taking a loss on them, not something thats easily done for someone on their first job on their first character. Leveling a craft is really better done by someone who is slightly more established and knows how to generate enough of an income to fund their gear, spell and item requirements in addition to being able to buy most of the items for their crafting and being able to handle the loss due to breaks.

Taking a craft up is something that if you are so inclined to do should be started soon in the game, but there is a time where it would be too soon.

But you're hardly on your first job on your first character. There's a little experience and knowledge difference.

yeah I understand about what you mean by too soon. I think in total I maybe have a week or 2 worth of actual play time logged since I first boutght the game over 3 months ago. But I have been trying to establish some real saleable items. from the looks of it stacks of crystals seem to do okay but not a lot of large hits on that. I was able to survive the travel to Bastok from SanD'Oria and was able to update my spell list from the AH there. Just no real money that is consistently there to speak of.
