  • Does disease have any other effects?

Something I've been wondering about for a while, the status description of disease says unable to recover hp / mp while resting and yet my melees always scream 'diseased' at me if I don't viruna them. They don't rest (bar paladins) so unless it has some other effect no big deal right?
    Am I missing something here?

I never thought it was a big deal, some people just don't like to see the negative status icons.

Personally, I'd call out 'Unclean!' when I was diseased just incase anybody really cared.

Makes it hard to get a date. I wouldn't wanna be "that MNK with disease" either.

There is no rush. If you're not willing to take your time, don't be surprised when no one wants to give you much of theirs.

What Impaction said, basically. People hate the negative status icons. Why let the healer rest for a moment or two when you can bitch at them for viruna?

I have a feeling that people think it does more then it really does. They just don't know what it is so it must be horrible.

Note that there are two different forms of Disease:

Disease is listed as such, and is given by attacks such as Rotting Gas from Hound-type enemies, or the physical add effect from Chigoes, as well as the Foul Breath attack from Raptors. This particular type of disease is the original type, and only stops HP/MP recovery while resting. Melee jobs that do not rest are not affected by this status (in the same way Blind doesn't affect spellcasters, and Silence doesn't affect non-casters).

Plague is the second, newer type introduced in Chains of Promathia. Plague imposes a negative MP and TP penalty over time (think of reverse Refresh for both MP and TP). Different enemies use this, from certain Empty in Promyvion to Buffalo in Uleguerand, as well as Tiamat's Tebbad Wing area attack. The amount of MP and TP drained varies depending on the enemy.

Both types of disease can be removed by the Viruna spell.

Exactly what I was going to say.

In which case, I will add an anecdote of my own.

Buffalo plague effects HP as well as MP and TP. And it drops MP FAST.

I was up with my linkshell farming buffalo meat or something of that nature, and there's three of us, PLD, THF, and my WHM. Lowing, we all get plagued. So I viruna the pld first, then the thf, and I wasn't paying attention to how much my MP was dropping by because then I pegged the pld with a cure before viruna-ing myself.

Well now I don't have enough MP to cast viruna.

              ~_~

So we all stand there and look at each other, and I sit down, and for awhile everything's okay, I have full hit points (At the time, I think about 600), so I figure I'll sit and wait it out, then full rest, and we can continue.

So we all sit down and have a good chat and emote cooking s'mores.

And then the thf says "Has that plague worn off yet?"

That's when we all realized I only have 120 HP left and the number's still going down.

So we all kinda stare at each other, and I finally say, "Well this blows. If I'd known I was going to die from this stupid shit, I would've taken hate away from the PLD so at least I didn't have to wait!"

So the PLD suggests I 2-hr it.

Now I have my pride. I say I'm not going to 2-hr because of a stupid DoT that I could remove myself, and secondly that for all I know it might NEVER wear off on it's own and I"ll just have to wait to die all over again. And thirdly, I am not going to 2-hr because of a DoT on ME, if it was him it would be different because I'm responsible for keeping him alive, but using my 2-hr on myself in a party is just selfish.

I don't know why it never occured to us that he was a PALADIN and could cure me...but we were all getting a little tense at the moment and more interested in arguing than being sensible.

So we argue back and forth, I have a responsibility to keep him alive, he'd rather I dind't die, I need to stuff my pride, he needs to get some of his, back and forth, until the THF finally pops up. "You gonna start resting anytime?"

Plague had worn off with about 50 HP left.

              The moral of the story:

VIRUNA THE PERSON WITH VIRUNA FIRST or else you might get stuck without a healer. The DRK can live without his TP and aspir back his MP later, the PLD will survive for 15 seconds, the SAM doesn't have MP to lose and he can pull TP out of his butthole.

Of all the status effects in the game, Viruna is absolutely essential that it be gotten off the WHITE MAGE FIRST. Slow, poison, bind, blind, not so much (infact, I think of those four, poison is the only one I bother removing from myself (unless it's a truly diabolical slow effect)). Viruna, get it off yourself the moment it hits.

Disease/Plague also has a nasty VIT-down effect, so it's probably important to take it off the tank ASAP as well.

Diseases generally have a nasty social stimga effect attached to it. A lot of people tend to avoid people who are diseased or plagued. Symptoms associated are usually psychological trauma as well as exhibiting tendencies to avoid socializing.

Even the more medicore form of disease no /heal has its drawbacks.

They can last from 15min to 1/2hr. It will bascially kill your XP PT without a whm around.

Like people with no whm fighting raptors. If your mages gets hit...well...you better have medicine on you.

Kind like how people learn to keep holy water against doom. Sucks to be you if a whm isn't fast enough.

All of which has very little to do with why a melee who isn't going to /heal anyway would ask a WHM in their party to get rid of Disease.

if they ask for it, I'll remove Diesesed. if not I wont bother. A mage is a different story though.
