Instead of a Pole / Staff I used a Hammer (not club, but a type of club)/Shield combo, but whatever works for you.

I'm loving this advice guys. I have another question: I'm level 4, and it's taking me a good chunk of time to get to 5. I've been limiting myself to easy prey mobs right outside of Windy; is this a good strategy?

Buy an Empress Band from the gate guards as soon as you have enough conquest points to do so (1000 I think). That will help your levelling a lot.

Thats pretty much what you want to be doing at that level. WHM is (arguably) the slowest to level for the first ten levels. Patience is the key now that you are level 4 and can loose XP on death.

Other than that, my advice is to try and sell -everything- and don't assume something is worthless until you look up the price on the Auction House, or see how much an NPC will buy it for. Especially at earlier levels when you can buy your armor from NPCs, even 100g can be a lot.

btw. NEVER DISCARD YOUR BEASTMEN'S SEALS!

They will come in handy later.... as they are the only way to enter BCNMs. (Trade a NPC a set amount and he will give you an orb to drop in to fight things that drop expensive treasure.)

Cool, thanks a bunch for the advice guys! I'm about halfway to five, and I should be getting there relatively soon this morning since I'm guessing it's a work day for a lotta folks.

              Peace!

Re: Beginner levels for a weary WHM?

I started out as a WHM myself and I remember the neverending pain of dying like every fourth fight because EP didn't level fast enough, and Empress Band didn't exist yet, and I was too stupid to buy a hammer.

If you need help sometime after the 11pm (EST) times, feel free to send a tell to me. I'll be living in Windurst for the next like freaking year leveling Bonecraft and would enjoy someone to talk to and help out =^_^=

Actually, it gives less EXP. It just gives more per kill. The Empress Band gives up to 1000 exp, while the Chariot merely gives 500.

Empress is better. The Chariot gives a higher percentage bonus, but it gives less overall XP. With Empress, you have three hours to earn 2000 XP, which will get you 1000 bonus XP, for a total of 3000 XP. Three hours is plenty of time to do that, so the fact that it comes in a little slower is not an issue.

                        Edit: Aelathir hax.

Re: Beginner levels for a weary WHM?

Plus, everyone knows that Empresses are better than Chariots. One is a ruler of a nation and the other is a cart.

EDIT: I'm less haxxy than I could be. Your answer was better anyway.

Ael, you raise a good point with your Chariot vs. Empress arguement...

While common wisdom says "wait till level 11 to start partying", if you're just up for fun and there's a melee type at the same level as you, duo'ing early on can be pretty handy.

The "Be Level 11" commandment for Whm's is because that's when you get Cure II which is useful for a.) saving badly hurt party members and b.) gaining a lot of hate and getting yourself killed in a hurry. Obviously it's good to have a feel for how hate works so that you can emphasize option A over option B there.

Hooking up with a Warrior earlier on (or any melee really) can help you begin to learn how to pace your Curing and use your enfeebles (like Paralyze and Dia) so that the mob will stay on the sturdy members of the party and off you (assuming said sturdy members have half a clue and are doing their jobs right).

Re: Beginner levels for a weary WHM?

I pretty much agree with what everyone's saying.. Leveling whm as your first job is pretty boring up until level 10. This was also my first job just do what everyone's saying, get sigent, kill a ton of EP's, buy an Empress Band, use it every like.. 15 hours, kill more EPs... rince and repeat.

Oh and if you don't have enough gil for armor, try using your Conquest points to buy some... that is if you have a high enough rank. You get rank by accepting various missions. After a time you'll have to trade crystals to the gate guards in order to unlock new ones. They're fairly easy if you have a higher level player helping ya' out since whm's a tough one to solo.

Oh and after like level 20.. it's impossible to kill EPs just as whm/smn or whm/blm.. Believe me.. I tried to kill a EP at level 32 (a Damselfly in Valkrum to be specific).. Sure I wasn't about to die, but you know when you can't beat the mob.. So I ran my butt off-since my mana pool was drying up.. I was chizzling away at it's health. I mean seriously... 21 tnl from level 33 and I couldn't take an EP... *Sigh* I was so mad lol.
