  • Can sneak/invisible be cancelled by mobs?

A few times that I've been helping my friends get to places safely their sneak/invisibility has just worn off instantly when we were near monsters. I don't think this was because they never told me that it was wearing off as in some cases I had just cast it on them. I don't think the mobs had true sight/hearing as they were goblins, orcs and davoi pugils , all of which I've sneak/invisible past before without trouble.

So do mobs get a chance to see/hear invisible people or was it that they just never told me it was wearing off? This has never happened to myself.

    Nope.

It happens when one of them wears off which the mob aggros to, it then hits you and takes off the other.

e.g. Sneak and invis past a sneak mob, sneak wears off, mob hits you and takes off invis.

    Double Post Edited:
Unless of course the mob is true-sight in which case it will just smack you down and take off both ^_^

Sneak and Invis don't have set durations. Sometimes they just start to wear immediately. But I'm not sure why you wouldn't get a notice at all before you were suddenly being beaten on by the mob.

Unless it was Truesight, which is rare.

I was'nt me the got aggro but the people I was sneak/invisible. I told them to tell me the moment the red "xxxx is going to wear off" message appears. In both cases I they never told me and later said it had just gone off. One was doing the paladin quest in davoi, the other in dangruf wadi getting chocobo grass. After reading the replies I think they probably just never told me sneak/inisible was wearing off.

Any attack directed at a player will negate Sneak, Invisible, and Deodorize statuses.

If you attempt to cast Sneak on someone who is in detection range of a monster that detects by sound, they will probably get aggro the moment they cancel Sneak (or it wears off). Even if your new spell lands immediately after, if the monster has detected the player, it will attack and instantly negate their Sneak/Invisible/Deodorize.

Also note that if you run past a sound-detector enemy with Invisible but not Sneak (for instance), it will still attack you as normal and negate your Invisible.

In almost every single situation I'd say "no" to your question. People have already discussed that part...so I'll mention the two times where sneak has just "failed".

First time wasn't actually me, it was my roommate's character. He was running around in the necropolis and then ran past one of the ghosts and it hit him. No sneak wearing warning, no yellow HP... He said he didn't click it off. He talked to a GM about it, but the GM didn't have any answers.

Second time was when I was running through ro'maeve. My sneak was on, then suddenly a weapon decided to cast bind on me... I got bound next to some more weapons, who decided I looked tasty and started beating me up... I ended up dying at the zone to hall of gods. I still haven't quite figured that one out.

Re: Can sneak/invisible be cancelled by mobs?

I have to say that whenever someone would get aggro and not tell me that Sneak or Invis was wearing, I did not believe the "I didn't even get a warning" excuses. Now, while I realize that most of the time they did get a warning and were just trying to push their luck, I did have it happen to me that it wore instantly once. I think it may be related to lag but I'm not sure since it only happened to me once in all my time in game. I even took screenshots to show people and everyone was pretty shocked. It just wore, no warnings but suddenly it just said "the effect of sneak has wore off" or whatever it says. So while I'm sure maybe once in a blue moon sneak or invis can happen to wear off with no warning, its so rare that most of the time its just people being dumb or trying to push their luck.

Re: Can sneak/invisible be cancelled by mobs?

It could be that the people you had casted it on took it off themselves without knowing. I have done it myself, in fact, when trying to view the chat log but accidentally turning off my sneak effect. And of course, not knowing it until I got aggro. -.- Although I highly doubt that both people did that, it is possible.

More likely explanation, they did what just about any melee does, they waited till it wore and then started crying that they didn't have it, and (naturally) in an unsafe place. My own husband did this ... and got me killed. I should have let him eat the death. To this day, he still doesn't understand why a level 60 DRK should carry his own oils/powders as long as he's got a mage nearby to cast it on him.

So if you guys see him, be sure to /slap him for me. He deserves it. Repeatedly.

One other thing, too.... If you /heal near an aggressive mob, regardless whether you have sneak/invis on or not, they will still attack you.

don't forget about Detect on Magic/Detect Low HP, those conditions are true, both effects cancel

also, not all the so-called "true-sight" mobs actually detect on sight. there are some that are actually mobs that detect sound (where invisible wouldn't help you anyway) and you need to refer those as "true-hearing" mobs. while you can walk behind a true-sight mob all day long, you can't do the same to a true-hearing mob.

This is not true. If they can't detect you by sound or sight, resting will not make them suddenly able to.

One exception to the above: resting, even with Sneak, with yellow HP near undead, even those which are Too Weak, will cause them to aggro you (found this out after soloing for an Eldieme Coffer Key using WHM75). Sneak will also not save you from undead if they would normally aggro you if you have yellow or worse HP.

Just an add-on note to Icemage's post. Nothing will save you from aggroing undead if you're in yellow HP and resting (assuming they're in range). Deodorize preventing low HP aggro is a rumor, not fact.

This has happened to me. Though I'm sure it's just a glitch. I was running around in Kuftal Tunnel. Sneak wasn't wearing off, not one message about it in my log. But suddenly a Robber crab attacked me and took off sneak himself. Robber crabs don't aggro to low HP either, so I really think it was just a monster spaz glitch.
