So what is this attack anyway?

It hits for 300-400 hp on a normal basis.
With the occasional hit that's so minor it's almost like a complete miss, or the occasional 600+.

So I cast Barfira to try and mitigate the damage a bit.
But, much to my surprise, the attacks don't seem to react much to it at all. It's not like using Barwatera to counteract the initial damage of Poison Spray - where the difference is smack-in-the-face obvious between use and non-use almost immediately. Where somebody went to the red before, now all they do is go yellow, except for the occasional unresisted incident that all barspells are prone to in terms of sheer technicality.

It appears my tank is intaking just about the same damage with barfira on than without.
Went an entire EXP session with a group of Friends today, casting Barfira off and on. And I just can't seem to come to a solid conclusion about it.

I know they seem pretty potent creatures in general, giving our PLD a little trouble with his Flashes, and disturbing the RDM with their resist rates. Does that mean they have a high INT and as a result have magic that's less resisty? (though we're talking about a mob ability that simply has an elemental alignment, not really spells)

Or am I falling into some kind of logistic trap?
(Well gosh, look at that mob. It has the word -eyes in it's name, and is covered in eyes. Surely it detects by sight. /proceeds to be gangbanged by Hecteyes)
(Ooooh Jet Stream. Like the infamous air current? A Baraera would help that.
    Bom-bom-bom 3-fold physical ass kicking.)
(Whirl of Rage gives Stun, eh? So much like how Poison Breath is Water-based and gives a Poison Effect, that means Whirl of Rage's Damage must be Thunder-based....)
(Well if regular Bombs are weak to Fire, than surely Snolls are weak to Blizzard. /Shiva barely tickles Snoll Tzar with Diamond Dust.)
...And Barfira isn't the way to approach this attack at all?

    Rawr.
It's really starting to get on my nerves. Input appreciated.

I can't figure this attack out either. Sometimes it does very little. Other times it does insane damage.

I was levelling RDM in a party in Bhaflau Thickets the other day with a katana-burn party (NIN NIN NIN RDM BRD BLM) and one of the NINs got one-shotted by a 1000+ Firespit. Barfira seems to affect it somewhat, but the resist rate seems really low even with Barfira up.

I'm wondering if it links to weather and day the same way Magmatic Crawlers do with their flame breath attack?
