  • Mana Conversation and Assault

    I'm having some trouble with my Mana during Assault.

    The crux of it being the fact your average party reads the word 'time limit' and somehow translates that to 'series of frantic headlong rushes to the nearest mob irreguardless of actual time left'. Coupled with the fact buffs wipe while walking in, even if your going in uncapped, it keeps putting me in a position where I'm starting this whole mess with about half my mana pool - with no real chance to recover outside of Refresh.

    Being that I'd like to Reraise III myself, and cast Protectra IV, ShellraIV, and RegenIII on PLD or Haste on NIN before I can even think of resting. Poof, half my mana.
    And it's not like the mob's just passively sitting there letting me do that. No, no, it's wailing on the tank. So Cure, Remove status effect, and melee #2 is already making a frantic headlong dash to the next mob while somehow managing to stare at that 50% of mana and angrily demand a Haste.

    My MP expenditures superceeds what I can recover with simple Refresh alone.
    The mobs while not exceedingly powerful, can still make ouch that needs to be healed, which in itself isn't an issue - along the lines of Roaming Merit parties. With the exception that much unlike these parties you really can't let mob proximity set-up a psuedo-camp for a handful of minutes - Assault mobs are positioned as far apart from eachother as humanely possible. Leading to a net loss - that always cumulates into a desperate situation, despite my almost fanatical reverance for the MP efficient Flash and Regen spells - by the last 2 or 3 mobs.

    So what do I do?
    I've tried - god help me- *reasoning* with people, bargaining with simple logic for a small measure of patience well within the time constraints given. But about all that's gotten me is the level 75 MNK's expert, all-knowing, advice on mana.
    "Why don't you rest through most of the battles like the BLM?"
    "A NIN doesn't need Protect"
    "Haste me, so I can kill the mob faster and save you mana"
    And so on. -_-;

    Obviously, and irritatingly, this is something I'm going to have to handle entirely from my end.

    Do I cross my fingers and sacrifice ReraiseIII?
    Reraise III is 200 MP, and that's a good start. But even in my most selfsacrificing moment that just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I eat a possible R1 because Person A is nervous and twitchy by the time limit, Person B couldn't care less, and Person C just can't keep their bloodlust in check long enough?

    Do I start bringing Ethers, despite the fact most others can't be bothered to even bring Food?

    Do I try to use % MP increasing Foods outside, rest to full, so that when I lose half inside I have more than usual?

    How have you folks been handling this?

    Depending on which assault you're doing, sometimes there simply is not enough time to wait for full mp after the whm buffs. One thing you can do is just rest unless the tank gets hurt badly. The people dont always have to be in the white HP, and a pld with refresh on can keep himself alive for quite a while while you rest. Everyone should be using food though imo. I see no reason for people to refuse to use food. Next time someone asks for haste, you could tell them to east food instead /shrug.

      Expensive suggestion 1: Get a lot of +MP gears, wear them all before entering, and swap out. This can get very expensive though - some items like Healing Staff, Serket Ring, Faerie Hairpin, Blessed Briault, and others are very pricy, but they can get you a lot of extra MP at the start.

      When I gear up for all-out-MP mode as Taru WHM75/BLM37 I end up with 1256MP before food, about 200 of which is "temporary": Healing Staff, Astral Ring, Blessed Briault, Republic Gold Medal. I could probably boost it a bit more with a Faerie Hairpin, too.

      Inexpensive suggestion 2: Psst. Check out Bretzels:

      3 minute food, +55 max MP. Use it right before you enter, rest to get the MP back, then go in and cast your spells. When they wear off, switch to the food of your choice. You can buy them from several NPCs in Bastok.

          A Reraise Hairpin will save you that 200 mp. You won't have rr3 but rr2 is fine. Maybe do p3 and s3 for a little more savings. Switch to regen 2 also and only haste the Nin if mp is so tight. If anyone complains tell them that you'll melee and they can be the whm otherwise shut it.

            Use Regens instead of Cures, don't buff the party.

            We use a RDM and BRD for these to great success. Even the RDM finds time to take a knee. With both of us regening mp, BRD throws up a gimp P2 and S. We keep regen on the tank and puller who are the only two ppl taking dmg. And we don't Sneak or Invisi party members, they bring their own medicines for that.

              The Bretzel's some good advice.
              Bastok has to be in 2nd Place for people to be selling it, but they stack to 99, so one trip lasts awhile. The 55 MP almost completely covers ProtectraIV's cost.
              Sexy.

              /rifles through her MH
              Hn. I do have some old clothes I can switch into for Max MP. My poor hume self can't quite get to that number without another good 3 million, but I can scratch together a good temporary +42 or +72 (daytime or nightime).

              Parsing down my Protect and Shell feels like shooting myself in the foot more than anything else. But, maybe I'll just Reraise II myself in the future. 25 MP cheaper, and if I do die a Raise II is still pretty good.

              Maybe I do need to add "Shut up" to my Vocabulary.

              Well, that's...charming.
              But I already favor Regens and Flashes far above Cures.
              And, I'm neither a RDM nor BRD. ^_^;

              Advice much appreciated :3
              I'll give this another go ^o^
