Complete FFXI newbie looking for advice

Hey guys!

As the title indicates, I'm a completely new player in FFXI. I've played many MMOs in the past, mainly EQ for 5 years, WoW for 1 year, and a myrid of others for short stints.

I've played many different roles and have decided to go with a white mage main job in FFXI, possibly Black mage as a sub-job, but I haven't really thought that too far through yet. What my main question would be, is whm a good starting job for me?

Also, I have leveled my WHM up to lv 5, but I haven't really done anything other than just heading out into the wilds and killing random things in the starting fields.

I apprciate any and all advice, and want to thank you ahead of times for any replies.

Edit: Forgot to mention, I'm a taru starting in Windhurst.

No one can really tell YOU what a good starting job for YOU is. Pick a job YOU want, after all you should be playing this game because YOU enjoy it. As for whm as a job class, it way my first job to 75. Overall I had a lot of fun, and I picked it because I figured being a main support aspect of my LS would be fun.

Mine two is a whm, but really it is up to you to pick what you think will be fun. really this game isnt about what the most powerful job is but what you think will make the game more enjoyable for yourself. I'm going to try and get every mage class up to level 75 including summoner cause thqts what i decided to do to make the game fun for me.

WHM will be very easy to get parties up until mid fourties. Then you'll have to compete a bit with some RDM and SMN healers.. but you're still pretty useful and needed.

Your job preferance in this game can change, before i liked blm but atm i realy want to lvl pld, just lvl what you want to lvl and have fun.

A lot of people change their minds on what jobs to play on this game. I think making your character independent of the jobs you level is a nice touch on Square's part, so long as you don't regret the race you pick.

Some people hate playing WHM, others love it. I liked it enough to take it to 75, and about 90% of the merit points I've gained since then have been on WHM, even though my SMN hit 75 shortly after my WHM.
