  • Should I learn cooking?

Some people say that cooking is a good thing to know how to do for a WHM. Are they right, and why? Also, do I learn it by joining the Culinarians' guild in Windurst?

Note: I'm level 4 and plan on changing to a SMN at 30-37.

Cooking is a decent Guild for most any character if your smart about it you can level it up to decent level for less than most fo the other guilds and since it creates Consummable Goods there's usually a pretty good market for you to make money from. If you go to the NPC and join the guild he will tell you the basics the other thing you could do is check the forums for guides on crafting.

      Re: Should I learn cooking?

Cooking is actually quite nice for a white mage b/c many of the items you can make for yourself aren't too high in the scale. Roast Mushrooms/Witch Kabobs for +mnd, variosu juices for 'refresh' effect, pies if you want +int and +mp and even cookies for quick magic refresh while resting. All dont require a lot of lvling and can benefit you a lot. If you however are looking for a craft to make you a lot of money, then cooking isnt all that hot until much higher lvls.

plus since juices don't stack you can save inventory space and make them on the spot

Crafting for yourself won't save much if any money unless you get high enough to HQ often. Juices aren't too useful because the time you spend crafting and using them could have been spent resting and getting more mp than the juice gives you total.

This assumes someone is crafting during chains etc. I would recommend having several already made juices with you and then some ingredients so that if down time occurs (afk, death, unordinarly long time between pulls etc) you can use that time to make yourself more. Juices are always useful but be smart when making them.

when i was younger, i used to craft at multriple things. because stuff i made with one craft i could use in another. same could be said with drops. you can kill sheep for meat, hare for meat. take them with dhamel meat an skill up on meat broth, take the rabbit hides an make rabbit mantle, take the sheepskin an turn it into sheep leather.

I'd reccomend leveling both Fishing and Cooking, Fishing supports cooking very nicely, you can level both to 100... and the results are useful for pretty much any job ^^ Anyways thats where I'm heading into, and I'm loving it so far

                    Re: Should I learn cooking?

There are times when resting for MP isn't an option; for instance, Dark Knights can make effective use of cooking in between battles to recover MP without losing TP.

Overall, Cooking is a very useful skill, but doesn't really make much of money until extremely high levels (90+).

Still, investing in 60 levels of Cooking is always a good idea. It's inexpensive, and can be very useful (making your own Yagudo Drink for boss/BCNM battles, for instance).

While this is pretty much true... There are things in fairly low level cooking that sell like hotcakes. These are things like Insect Balls which go for about 2k a stack on garuda (1 synth = 1 stack) and Yagudo Drinks which sell at a rediculous rate for around 2-3k each on garuda. So while you can't get rich off low level cooking, there is still money to be found there.

                        Yes, unfortunately, this is true. But even then, most of the recipes you are at the mercy of the fishermen unless you're fishing up Black Soles by yourself. >.<;;

I think cooking is totally worth leveling up to at least make pinapple juice. It doesn't cost much at all (infact, you might be able to profit from it) to get that high, either. The juice is pretty cheap to make, and like x1ang mentioned, you save a lot of inventory space by making them yourself. Plus you get used to the crafting system without spending much money.

                            Re: Should I learn cooking?

low level cooking can be easy little income When my skill was only 30 or so I made a lot of money selling insect paste as mentioned above.

2k for earth crystals, 12 worms for 40, 12 corns for couple hundred, 12 water for 200? you can make them into 12 stacks of insect paste selling for 2-3k a stack = over 10k profit xD
This amount of income for high level players is not a huge amount at all. But for someone without high level jobs, it is a reliable source of income with very little investment.
