  • Farming Gear Question^^

    Hi guys ^^

It's me again. Asking for your wonderful wisdom about WHMs....since I don't jack about them....well......I don't know enough about them ^^

I was wondering what kind of gear do you usually wear while farming? Is it the same as your exp gear? Perhaps some minor changes? Please list them if you could

Thanks once more for all your help ^^ I really appreciate it all.

It's not a pertinent question. I don't farm as WHM, and most post-60 WHMs I know don't either. It's not an effective use of time, since WHM offense is so low, even after Hexa Strike.

Farming for WHM basically stops the instant we are strong enough to pick up a Pickaxe. Gusgen mines seems to be a populate hot spot for WHMs on Siren to mine as the monsters are relatively low level and the Ores/stones found give moderate returns.

For the few levels we do actually farm, say level 10 to 40 (possibly 35 or maybe even 30) I have never met a WHM who uses any significantly different EQ setup over their normal EXP gear (excluding a chnage of weapon of course).

WHM are such weak melee that we never fight anything stronger than the weakest of the weak enemies anyway so strong DEF+ / ATK+ ACC+ gear is not required.

There's been quite a bit of discussion about this. At the end of the day, if you really want to seriously farm, then you should level another job to do it with. WHM is quite simply a crap farmer and there's nowt you can do about it.

To tell you the truth you should pick up a farming partner... heal him as he farms and throw in your bit of damage , split the loot at the end of the farming session.

More accurately, it's that clubs (even mauls) are so weak compared to other weapons. The much vaunted Darksteel Maul has a base damage over time of only 6.8 damage per second due to the really high delay. The Martial Wand is slightly better, at 7.2 dps, but still nothing compared to DD jobs' weapons. Staves are better (9.3 dps with an Iron-splitter), but the lack of powerful weaponskills (and WHM's C+ skill with them) makes them worse than clubs for farming (except for Spirit Taker to avoid downtime). Even 1-handed swords have equal to or better damage over time than staves (and have decent WS's, even for RDM's who can't use Vorpal Blade when farming)

The few times I've attempted farming for a change of pace, I didn't really earn much (barely 15k/hour at most, if I'm lucky). But, when I did, I basically just used my AF, with a Green Beret +1 instead of my Healer's Cap, a life belt, venerer's ring, darksteel maul, and numinous shield. Magic pots are about the only mob we can match most other jobs in damage to (and exceed with Hexa Strike), but their drops aren't really worth the effort. Marlboros and other mobs with dangerous status effects are fairly decent for WHM to farm (due to our naturally high magic resistance), but still not really worth it.

Duo farming is a possibility (I've done this a couple times with a PLD friend), but usually a WHM in such a group is little more than dead weight; the other person will always earn much more money farming alone than with a WHM's "help".

There are just so many other ways that WHM can earn money (and usually much more). As Dux said, mining is one possibility, especially since teleports give us easy access to most mining areas. Fishing is another really nice WHM profession for the same reason. Unless SE adds a Platinum Maul or something with better damage for high levels (which we're in dire need of; why should the maul line stop at level 65?), WHM farming will always be something of a joke.

The only time I ever farm anything is going after NMs that drop items that either aren't easily purchased, are rarely hunted, or are ridiculously overpriced. And even on those occasions, I always bring someone else to deal damage and/or tank.

Even with Spirit Taker and a high damage staff like Kirin's Pole or Iron-splitter, you simply cannot kill things quickly enough to merit the time spent.

What I want to know is why a 69 rdm would bother posting a question about farming as a whm??

Zempten, are you just bored, or was this really bugging you and you had to ask? lol

i really don't farm as whm either (esp when i have 63 war/thf), but there are times I will. i've even farmed the tigers in the glacier as 56 whm, as i won't get aggro from anything else as long i stay away from the elementals.

my equipment generally isn't that much different than i would have in a exp party

                  main: blessed hammer
                  sub: holy shield
                  ammo: holy ampulla
                  head: cosair's hat
                  neck: tiger stole
body: nimbus doublet (gulp, not going to waste the mony on holy breastplate when i get af body in 2 levels)
                  hands: custom f gloves/battle gloves
                  legs: healer's pantaloons
                  feet: healer's duckbills
                  waist: lifebelt
                  rings: venerer's ring/balance ring
                  earrings: fang earrings

i switch to standard exp gear when it comes to dark elementals; they are pretty easy as long you keep stoneskin up, keep them silenced, and use banish 2/banish at every chance you got. i went from shield skill 107 to 112 while farming them, and still getting skillups on shield on top of that. i usually kill these with my warrior job so i can use sword for 300tp 100%hp spirits within that does nearly 600 damage and seraph blade at 200% tp that does 250 damage.

best places to farm is pashhow marshlands, glacier, and carpenters landing. just stay away from morbol-type mobs. make sure that thief subjob leveled all the way, not stopped at 15.

once at 50, just steal from essedarius that sits outside of rabao. you don't have to kill it - just steal and flee back into rabao. you can steal mythril beastcoins - the rest of the drops off this mob isn't worth killing for especially when it got jamming wave.

I'm doing it to help my friend. Just trying out different things to help her out, but it seems I'm going to give duoing a try with her.

Just a question, how long did you have to camp the NM that drops the sword before it popped, and what kind of party did you have to successfuly defeat it? I want that sword bad, but I dont want to drag my LS down to Sea Serpent Grotto to camp for 5 hours and come out empty-handed.

                      Thanks.

I camped it at level 65. I soloed the placeholders constantly with another WHM. Originally we didn't plan on getting the NM, just wanted to help her skill up her Divine Magic with the bringing of Banish 3. We were getting 100 to 140 exp per kill. If I soloed I got 200 exp a kill. We just kept doing that and all of a sudden he just spawned in front of us. I asked some friends and those guys asked their friends and eventually 1 NIN, 2 BRDs, and 5 RDMs came and we killed him.

The NM is Charybdis, and he's definitely a handful. Has Quad-attack trait (like Double Attack for WAR, or Triple Attack for THF, except he gets to hit 4 times in combat.. ouch). Also likes spamming Waterga III, Maelstrom, Whirlwind, and a VERY potent Ink Jet attack that blinds you for over 1 hour and drops melee accuracy through the floor. I don't know the exact spawn time, but he's supposed to be something like 21 hours + lottery, which sounds about right to me. I spent over 1 solid week camping Charybdis with my LS, and we were able to pop him at about the same time every single day, give or take a few hours, to get the sword for all of our PLDs and RDMs.

Recommend you take at least two full parties of ~70 to be safe. It's very easy to wipe to this guy if you're not careful, or just unlucky. Can definitely be done with less, but the fewer people you have, the more likely something can go wrong.

If you really want to try farming as a WHM, just grab a DS Maul, a Lifebelt, and you should be good to go. WHM can't solo anything too difficult anyways, so having uber farm gear won't really help.

                              Thanks Icemage and Zempten.

Since posting that question, I did some digging through the forums and got some more info on what is needed to kill it. The only thing that remains an issue is how long it will take to pop it. Without knowing last ToD, it will be a pain.

                              My LS is pretty strong, just not overly big. 75 NIN, 73 NIN, 4 PLD ranging 68-75, a few rangers 70+, a 74 BRD, 74 SAM, etc. I'm the only RDM, but I'm not sure now if the first Joyeuse is mine since the PLD's expressed interest in it too ><;

If it helps indicate where our LS stands strength-wise, we took out Genbu in about 15 mins the other night. We had 16 people. Two deaths, both ninjas died once because of taking damage too fast...not sure exactly which attacks killed them since i had it filtered. I dont know if that was a good battle or a bad one, compared to what other HNMLS can do. It was also our first God, so I think it went pretty well.
