  • Whm Newbie Questions!

ok I'm new to FFXI I started FFXI yesterday I thought it was pretty kool and also I was wandering what magic spells should I learn and not learn and also should I use a Club or a stave? and being a White Mage Taru and all I seem not being able to kill one monster because my HP sucks and my strength sucks too can somebody help me with these problems? and thanks in return!

Kill monsters with signet on. You can get crystals, and crystals are a nice way of making money early on.

Buy all the spells you can. The ones you don't to worry about are status enhancers that aren't -ra...such as you get Protectra, but don't need to worry about Protect (at level 7).

Use a hammer/maul when soloing, but when partying MP is the most important focus, so you're probably better off with a Staff.

Spells are more important than equipment, and as a WHM most of your exp will be gained in parties.

Don't worry about being a weak little taru, this games about having fun. Paralyzing monsters and hitting them with Dia will make them easier to kill/fight. Hope you have fun with FFXI!

Use a club (or maul) and shield to begin with. From levels 1-10 the most important spells are Cure, Dia, Paralyze, Poisona and Protect. To fight, pull a monster by casting Dia or Paralyze on them, then proceed to attack while casting further enfeebles. Cure yourself if you get hurt, and when you defeat your enemy rest up to full before doing it all again.

During the low levels, just make sure that you grab your Cure, Regen, and all spells ending with -na. Also be sure to pick up Dia, Paralyze, Slow, and Silence as soon as you reach the level needed to learn them. Those are 4 important debuffs that will make your partying go much faster.

When you are soloing, you'll be most effective with a club or maul . When you begin to party up, you'll want to change to using a wand with the most +MND you can get. Extra MND will help you land your Paralyze, Slow, and Silence a lot better.

I would stay away from using a staff until level 51. There aren't any staves before 51 that are better than a wand with +MND. Good luck with Whm-

Honestly I always had a wand leveling from 1-46, only leveling staff to 70~ for Earth Crusher..or..whatever the AoE WS was...I've seen WHM with mad MP below 25 using staffs and MP gear, so I guess thats why staffs came to mind.

Here's a nice piece of advice, be helpful, but dont get pushed around.

From lvl 1-5 you can use your weak rod.

From lvl 5-10 get a Bronze Hammer to solo with. This will greatly improve your attack power even though its nothing super, every little bit helps >< In beta i used the rod all the way and DAMN thats hard...i cant kill alot of things =/ So the Hammer really helps. O and remember to pick up a lvl 1 shield for cheap at Port Windy ^^ Wand = PT, Hammer = Solo

Paralyze was my choice to start a battle, because not only does it have longer casting time than Dia, it also has more noticable effect on the monster getting paralyzed and can let you land a Banish ^^ If you have too much trouble, maybe duo with someone.

Recommend killing Goblins and Yagudos whenever you can, Wind and Fire Crystals sell more at the AH than most others. But remember never to take Even match, and Decent with High Defense is already hard. I only take Decent maximum, no high def please.

Spells: Cure, Banish, Dia, Paralyze, Protectra, Poisona, Parayna.

And remember to bring a few out into the battle field over lvl 10 when you begin partying. Many times WHMs dont bring a CureII scroll with them and that makes it HARD. So remember to get the above spells, and when you reach lvl 10, bring CureII with you at the very least when you lvl up for your party.

Spells to get are always Cure spells, Enfeeble spells like Dia/Paralyze, Protectra/Shellra line, the status cure -na line. Bar spells can wait til you are around lvl 25ish for me.

Most of the time i also ran out of money at this stage so get at least a linen robe and stuff(minimal gear, just dont wear lvl 1 stuff all the way), then focus on spells. You can make some of the money up later with Teleports(as thats what i did, farming as WHM isnt that fun..).

BTW I personally stayed away from staffs since i was a taru and MP wasnt that big an issue..but MND was, so i went Wand til lvl 51 when there are worthwhile staves.

            I hope that helps.

Here's a nice piece of advice, be helpful, but dont get pushed around.
Agreed, some(not all) think you are supposed to do everything for them, but do not get pushed around, be helpful but dont be forced to do everything for them.

                Never melee in a party.

Never charge for a raise when you gain access to such spell. Never...ever, REGARDLESS of the reason.

Attitude is what defines a whm from my experience. Rather good or bad, keep your head up. There's some ungrateful whm haters out there in the game. Ignore them, and stay cool.

Meh, though I have 31 levels of experience, I have to start over, so I'm a newbie just like you. Hehe.

I have a couple of questions to ask, if I may. (me being fairly new to FFXl)

1 - Since someone mentioned it in an above post...
What does MP mean, please? It wouldn't just mean "Magic Power" or some such, would it?

2 - As a WHM, it seemed as I only received 1 spell automaltically to start off with, ("Cure") but my character is now at LvL 4, and I'm just wondering.....
do I automatically get anymore spells as I go up in levels, or do I only have to buy them as scrolls from a merchant?

Also, do mages learn the spells from the scrolls, so that they can add them as a proper spell to the list, (like where the spell "Cure" is. I don't know what it's called) or are they just scrolls to use the spells from?

So overall, what I am trying to ask is....
how DO mages learn new spells as they go up in levels?

                    Please help.
                    Thanks.

Mages learn them by buying them from merchants at magic shops or buying them from the AH ( Auction House) always try and get your scrolls from a Merchant then buying then from the AH its alot cheaper from merchant
People look at the world and think why, i look at the world and think why not.

To get new magic, you need to buy the scrolls (as stated above). Spells have a minimum level requirement to be used, meaning you can't get a Lv60 scroll and use it at Lv5. At Lv4, you have the following spells available to you - Cure, Dia and Paralyze. To get these spells you must buy the scrolls and then use them, then the spell will appear in your Magic command menu (the place where Cure is at the moment).

What you DO get automatically is Job Abilities and Job Traits. Job Traits are abilities you get at certain levels which are always active, for example at WHM Lv10 you will learn Magic Defence Up, which will (strangely enough) increase your Magic Defence by a little. This effect is permanant.

Job Abilities are special abilities which don't require MP and can be used at your leisure. For example, at WHM Lv15 you will learn Divine Seal, which when used will double the amount of your next Cure. It can be used once every ten minutes.

MP stands for Magic Points, HP stands for Hit Points.

Any furthers questions please don't hesitate to ask.

                          Hi again.

I have another 2-3 questions to ask, if I may.

2 - Is it true that you CAN actually buy stuff from the AHs then? I thought they were only used for placing bids on items, as I didn't seem to be able get an option of buying anything from them, when I have looked at them - only a menu which allowed me to place bids. Maybe someone could enlighten me a bit more here.

I have seen other players with symbols above their character's heads, they're all different. Some look like little bags of gold, others are different coloured round circles. Do these have something to do with auctioning too?

2 - Players seem to be able to reach high levels in this game.
I am also devoted to another game which is similar to FFXl in some respects, but character levels can only reach a maximum of 40.
Seeing as FFXl is a really big game, what is the maximum level, a character can reach, here? I have a distinct feeling that it's a number, somewhere over 100. which I feel is quite amazing considering.

Any input here would be appreciated.
                          Thanks.

P.S. - I feel I may have started to wander away from the main topic of discussion a bit, here. Sorry about that.

The symbols next to the characters resemble different things. A character with a big red "?" next to their name indicates that they are a new player (Just created under lv. 5(?) and has less then 10hrs game play). Players with the colored orbs indicates that they are part of a Linkshell. Linkshells allow you to communicate to a group of players also holding that same Linkshell, you can get access to that linkshell by having a sackholder to that linkshell give you a pearl to it. There is a maximum of 10 LSs you can join.

Characters with a sack next to their name means they are selling items in their bazaar, to see what items they are selling select them and in the action menu use the check command. You should see the gear they are wearing and at the bottom their "View Bazaar" option should be selectable. Select that and you can see what they are selling.

There are many other symbols that'll appear next to a players name as well indicating different things. Including who's a GM, guest character, Mentor, Vana'diel Tribune press, etc...

                            Bidding
In the AH you use the bid command to offer a price you'll buy the item for. The AH then checks to see if any players selling their item is selling it for that price or cheaper, if someone is you will then get the item at the price you offered. It's as simple as that.

The current max level on this game is 75. However there are a few marker levels which require you to complete a certain task to continue, these marker levels are 50, 55, 60, 65, and 70. Once you have reached lv. 75 the game currently switches to a merit point system in which you gain merit points instead of exp. These points you can use to improve specific stats which have limits to how much you can put into a specific group of stats. This lets you further customize your characters abilities.

                            EDIT:

As an FYI when this game was first made it's level max was 50. After a few updates the max was raised to 55, again process repeated to raise to 60, 65, 70, and finally 75. These max levels and the process to go higher is know as the Genkai 1-5 (or Limit Breakers 1-5). The games system has the potential of reaching level 255 but if the game will ever go that high in levels is still uncertain. Many people think that 75 has become the chosen limit for the game to reach because of the introduction of the merit system once you hit 75.

Also though it's believed that the other possible 180 levels will only be used as test levels for new gear as well as NPC only spells

It's also at Lv50 that the tough slog for levels really begins. At Lv51 you suddenly need 10,000XP to level. This goes up to 20,000XP at Lv60 and then jumps to 30,000XP at Lv61. Every consecutive level after that requires 1,000XP more than the last.

I think someone worked it out that the experience required to Level 61-75 is the same amount needed for Level 1-60. It's not easy. However, it's not something you're obligated to do. Lots of people I know have several jobs in the 50's or 60's without actually taking any to 75.
