  • White Mage Merit Points

So... for a whm, which merit points do you think we should go for, assuming we don't lvl any other Job?

    Would it be...
    HP/MP: 5 MP
    Stats: 3 MND
    Combat: 6 Club?
    Magic: ?
    Others: 3 - Emnity?

Magic is a hard choice... Healing magic doesn't really do that much... Divine = more dmg and longer Flash?... but who are we kidding... Divine Magic dmg >_>... Enfeebling?... Enhancing... I guess we could get more out of that stoneskin...

Combat: Club I guess... Shield is so hard to raise -.-

Stats: Mnd for miniscle cure improvement and debuffs...

    HP/MP: 50 mp [Yes, Please]

Others: Don't really need spell interruption, critical, +emnity... so I guess - emnity is the best... Not like a whm would pull hate during HNM fights... -2 seems to be quite sufficient...

    What are your thoughts?

other than mp i dont really think merit points are particularly worth it for whm. i would seriously consider any other job you might want to level 75 instead. but since you said assuming no other job...

if whm was going to be the only job youd ever level...id go with the 3 mnd, club skill, enhancing (i really think boosting our crappy enfeebling would be a complete waste), and -enmity.

whm merit points are a no brainer.

mp, mnd, club/shield, enfeebling ( enhancing and healing are totally pointless ), enmity-.

I think its pointless raising any of those stats except maybe mp though.

Does anyone know of a good site that details the xp costs and conversions for these upgrades?

As far as upgrade, I'm thinking of Mp first, then maybe -emnity (can't ever really have enough, and with zenith gear you lose quite a bit). Enfeebling I've already given up as I'm so far behind rdm's it's almost not worth it.

mysterytours has a good guide, but its pretty simple

          5 categories

          hp/mp 5 upgrades
          stats 3 upgrades
          combat skills 6 upgrades
          magic skills 4 upgrades
          others 4 upgrades

You are limited to upgrades per category, however there is no limit on total upgrades so your free to max out each category.
There are caps within categories, for example you may only upgrade critical hit rate twice, even though you have a maximum of 4 upgrades in the others category.

hp/mp is increased by one each consecutive upgrade,

          eg
          HP 1 = 1 point to upgrade, gives +10hp
          HP 2 = 2 point to upgrade, gives +10hp
          HP 3 = 3 point to upgrade, gives +10hp

Stats - first upgrade costs three points for +1, second upgrade costs 6 points for +1, third upgrade costs 9 points for +1.

Of course if you wish to spread them out, eg +1 str, +1 dex, +1 agi, it would only cost you nine points. If you wished to upgrade str+3 it would cost you 18 points total.

Combat skills it seems like you may upgrade weapon skills 4 times, and the secondary skills twice. Linear increase here, eg 1 point, 2 point, 3 point.

I havn't experimented with magic skills yet, I expect them to follow similar rules to combat skills.

Others: you are limited to two upgrades per "skill" here.

for example you may only upgrade critical hit rate twice.
          Again a linear increase.

          Mine are currently distributed thus:

          HP/MP section: 1 HP upgrade
          Stats: No upgrades
Combat Skills: 2 Evasion skill upgrades
          Magic Skills: No upgrades
Others: 2 Critical Hit Rate Upgrades 1 Spellcasting Interupt down
          Upgrade.

Spent 8 points, currently have one point, need another to get second spellcast interup upgrade and cap out the others section, then moving to hp and str until my ninja hits 75, then spending on ninjutsu skills and possibly katana skill ( depending on if I level another job or not ).

Oh, each point costs 10k. after you talk to the moogle and your on a 75 job there is a new category in status where you can see how many limit points you have accumulated towards a merit point, and how many merit points you have, and which upgrades you have purchased.

            oh and quick note, if you want to buy consecutive upgrades and spend as many merit points as you can earn ; ;

you require 62 points, aka 620k exp.

Now considering 1-75 requires slightly less than 1 mill exp this seems slightly extreme :-]

Personally I've made 9 points, aka 90k exp past the cap.

Another point, I'm not sure about hp/mp, however for skills the upgrades remain the same regardless of level, if you upgrade a combat skill ( they upgrade by +2 per upgrade, so 4 upgrades = +8 skill ), you would still get that +8 boost if you switched to another job that has the skill.

Thanks very much for the details Gryffes. I think i'll pass on hp#4 and 5, but 60k xp for 30 mp doesn't sound like a terrible trade, particularly when there's no corresponding -hp.

                Just an opinion:

enhancing is totally pointless = FALSE.

Phalanx, barspells and stoneskin are based on enhancing.

Before you put any points, consider this:
Considering the best damage spell you get is Banishga 2, Mind isn't going to help you very much at higher levels. 3 points will not make a significant difference. Mind isn't a wonderful stat to pump except at very low levels when you have not hit your curing caps. If you want to reduce magic damage to you, pump INT, unless you're really scared of banish. VIT is nice since it reduces base damage taken, and DEX is about the only other thing you might consider for soloing purposes since WHM have awful accuracy. I DO admit that MND has one significant use:

Stoneskin soak = enhancing magic - (some constant, I think it was 90) + MNDx3, so boosting mind will help stoneskin. (by a total of 9 hitpoints, whee?)

You could theoretically go all +enfeebling and +mnd, but the RDM will still stick spells much better than you, and slow and paralyze aren't exactly stellar considering Hojo:Ni and Jubaku:Ni are better.

+Club/shield: I prefer Staff because of spirit taker. Hexa strike isn't all that impressive as seeing an MP bar go from near zero to almost full. If you want to pump club, you might as well put all your stat points into STR and DEX. +Shield is a terrible idea IMO cause shield skill works only if you are facing your opponent.

-enmity: Not really a no brainer. -%interruption can help more if you plan to solo and use stoneskin/blink/phalanx. HNM purposes, definitely -enmity.

It's a silly point, but if you use AF boots (20%) Eremite's wandx2 (50%) Druid's rope (10%) Aquaveil (+??) and merit, you could theoretically Utsusemi tank without ever getting an interruption.
I believe most sigs are like the people they represent - useless, loud and obnoxious.

enhancing skill is far more useful for a whm than enfeebling skill. no matter how much you boost your enfeebling skill with merit points and or enfeebling gear, your enfeebles wont stick on anything that matters. a decent rdm has over 300 skill at lvl 75. if you like to solo, your enfeebles are already good enough to stick on things that a whm is capable of soloing assuming your skill is maxed, so merit points in enfeebling is a complete and total waste.

that is not to say that enhancing skill is oh so amazing, but it is the most practical and relevant of any merit point magic skills a whm could choose.

                      No, no there is not.

Oh, and Jabuki: NI isn't in the game yet. Even if it were...not every WHM keeps a NIN in their pocket ;x

But Id go with +MP personally, but Im a complete and total MP whore...so...thats a no brainer for me <.<
