    We all know RDM is very potent at soloing NM, but just how good is whm?

    The basic tactic for both remains the same.

    sub NIN and:


    Stoneskin->blink-> cast debuffs and engage, use food ( if your not confident about your blink ability use fishkabob if your ok use meat or use eva+ food ).

    Obviously RDM has a much superior skillset for this type of work, but I'm interested in results WHM have obtained solo'ing or fighting in small groups vs HNM ( 2-3 etc. )

    I just tried habetrot which I normally fight with a 72 paladin friend my setup was as follows:


    AF + emp hairpin, lifebelt, 2xbalance rings, spike necklace, empowering mantle ( I'll probably buy a dodge ), 2xdodge earrings, darksteel maul and astral aspis.

    stoneskin, blink, reraise 3, engage and start.

    It was hitting around 80-100 when it got to me, and additional affect slow, so its important to keep it debuffed etc.

    Result: victory.

    I know habetrot isnt a hugely hard NM but you have to start somewhere ^^

    I'm currently working for my optical hat ( 1/5 eyes obtained so far ) which will also help a great deal. And when I have that I'm going to try some higher NMs.

    Anyone else have interesting results?

    Grats on your liberation. It's true we aren't rdm's, but we can scrap with the best of them. It's really fun once in awhile to smash things, instead of sitting back and healing. I'm planning to solo most of my exp needed from 74 to 75. (Or duo it with a good thf friend, we make light chains)

    Here's my whm setup.

    74whm/37nin

    Main: Darksteel Maul +1
    Sub: Darksteel Maul
    Neck: Spike necklace or Spirit Torque
    Head: Emperor's hairpin (Optical hat, which I don't have yet)
    Body: Aketon (The blue one! great evasion)
    Hands: Healer's mitts (Str +5, healing skill)
    Earrings: Dodge x2, or Coral x2
    Rings: Ruby x2
    Cape: Dodge cape
    Belt: Jungle sash or Survival Belt
    Legs: Noble's slacks or AF
    Feet: Savage Gaiters, Dance shoes

    It's a shame we have limited selection of equipment, we can't use some power gear that a rdm can use. (Assault Jerkin, Cardinal Vest) so we have to make due with what we can wear.
    As you can see, it's mostly str or evasion based. I use the str when picking on too weak mobs (Farming, etc) but evasion is godly for EP or DC mobs. There's the obvious Utsusemi: Ni and Stoneskin combo. Since we don't have Phalanx, we need to avoid taking as much hits as possible.

    Hexa strike is your best friend, and with all my +str equip, I got 1400+ dmg on a ghast. I consistently hexa Easy Prey bone mobs for 700 to 900. Bones are best to solo exp off cause they hate hammers. But yeah, I really like doing this; to be different. I'd rather deck out whm and make it into a decent fighter, than raise a melee class from scratch. Granted, we'll never have dmg like Drks, etc, but surprising people and making whm into a scrapper is fun. I'd rather have spent all this money on this attack gear than on a vermillion.
    (I use Errant's gear in exp parties, Vermillion is overrated, and overpriced)

      Ah I use a spirit torque also, just forgot to take it with me.

      I use darksteel maul+shield because nin sub only ever gets dual wield bonus 1 which is 10%. I'd rather block attacks and level shield for my pld than swing the odd time more.

      I'm working on an optical hat and hoping someone puts a dodge cape on the AH soon. ( If not I'll have to go and spank diamond quadavs until I get one ).

      I also picked up some dance shoes and managed to solo the shadow NMs in feiyin ( eastern + northern in the same night ) but no drops.

        This is really nice.. i never thought whm has the ability to solo tougher mob.

        BUt i noticed a great deal of gils has to be pumped too but hey like what you guys say, beats rasiing another melee job up to lvl 70, it's a pain.

          The only thing we're lacking for longer fights is Refresh... stack up on yag drinks though, and there's not too much trouble.

            we miss refresh, convert, gravity, and any decent nukes, rdm is way above us in terms of solo ability.


            However, last two dynamis trips ( WHM is very dull, like 30-45 minutes of nothing then 1 minute of healing as someone in your party manages to take hate ), I've been melee'ing instead of watching paint dry.

            Managed to get club from 236->240 in dynamis and managed to kill two monsters with my darksteel maul in bastok :-]


            Also I took agro from an effigy and blinked it for 3-4 rotations ( of utsusemi - not blink-spell ) because we were dealing with multiple effigys and after it was engaged I tossed a cure V onto my paladin who was fighting something else ~_~ ( these things hit me for 350 or so if they hit ).
