Thx all for the kind words!
2.0 - My club skill is currently at 225. I lvled it up almost entirely outside of exp PT's. While I do believe it is ok for whms to melee against certain types of monsters (crabs, crawlers, non-aoe type mobs, etc), I found that it was next to impossible for me to keep club skilled up to the point where it was of any use as it seemed that the majority of monsters that i fought had some special ability that made it inefficient to melee against. When I do skillup or lvl club I always equip a lifebelt and this great set of gloves I don't hear talked about too much, aiming bracelets (i think lvl 49, +6 acc, -15 atk but do not care much about atk as long as I do 1 dmg ^^). They are very cheap on my server. I have a macro set that mirrors my "non-engaging, traditional whm" macro bar but replaces everything with <stpc> instead. Also, if you are just looking for skillup, use a wand instead of a mace/maul as the cooldown on the weapon is much, much lower.
Kalel - I actually made a video of my fight with maat using fraps (In the event that I lost, I wanted to learn from my mistakes). Fortunately, I was able to win on my first attempt. After reviewing the tape and adding things up, I ended up taking around ~6000 pts of damage and healing for way more than 4000. So I, too, am a believer of the fact that it is the dmg you must take, rather than how much you heal that is the winning condition. As to how I did it, in preparation I decided to wait until lightsday and to also use a light staff. I started out w/my 2 mp rings, then switched to the lvl 70 JSE earring (-30% physical dmg taken) and the lvl 50 JSE ring (healing +10%) after mp was used. It was so strange, because my Cure III's ended up healing so much more then they usually do when the +30% healing went into effect, that my curing was all off and I was sort of inefficient on occasion(I think one Cure3 healed for like 234 (!)).
My basic fight strategy was to go in - eat crab, buff up, rest, cast regen 3, drink yagudo, begin fight (i did not even engage with him, just casted paralyze I think to start the fight), use Cure 3, use mulsum, C3, mulsum, C3, mulsum, etc and C4s after a WS or crit. The mulsum was a bit of a problem because I wasn't able to use it as fast as I anticipated I could after every Cure3 because he hits just a little bit too fast. He paralyzed me 2x during the fight but I was able to paralyna myself without failure so it wasn't much of a problem. When my mp got low I stopped casting entirely and began quaffing hi-pots as I waited for the Yagudo drink to restore my mp enough that I could heal again. He gave up during the hi-potion phase of the fight. Oh, and I think I benedictioned after he used Dragon kick on me and used flash once. In all I brought 3 yagudo drinks, 12 echo drops (used 0), 10 hi-pots (used 8 or 9), 16 mulsum (used ~8), and 1 emergency vile elixir (did not use).
My best advice to you would be to write up a little checklist of things to do b4 and during the fight. I had one and I know I would have forgotten to do something if I hadn't as you tend to get kind of nervous because of the nature of this bcnm (1x1). Also make sure to have everything macro'd out (especially paralyna, and echo drops) and practice before hand so you know that all macros work (just make sure you are in a running motion and you will not actually use any of the pots, etc). My only regret is that we as whms don't get to punish Maat like most of the other classes do ^^. (Actually, on that note there is a whm in my LS who actually pounded Maat down w/hexastrike. He set the record for beating him around ~4:00 but this was b4 the TP nerf to WS's so I do not know how feasible this method is any more).
Well, GL and let me know if you have any more q's!
