  • From 1-75 as a WHM: My experiences

Last weekend I finally hit lvl 75 whm, so I wanted to write a little (ok dang, turned out to be a LOT) about my experiences and how I have learned to play whm in the hopes of giving something back to the great whm community(and also to ensure that I don’t forget how to play myself lol). I absolutely do not claim that the way I do things is the right and appropriate way to play and I’m always willing to get advice on how to do things better or more efficiently, so if you have a suggestion, please add your experiences here to help me + others improve as a whm! Please note that some of this advice might seem to some players extremely basic and trivial, please keep in mind that I’m not trying to be condescending but just trying to be as accessible to players of all levels as I can.

First off, there is no set routine to playing whm. Much of how you will play as a whm is dependant on your PT makeup, and where and what you are fighting. You must really be cognizant of your PT makeup – Location, jobs, and even race will decide how you will play and what spells you will cast.

But generally speaking, the typical course of a battle will involve buffing, debuffing at the beginning of a fight, then the dynamic healing phase during the fight, and finally post-fight procedures. We’ll start with…

    DEBUFFING
It is true that in PT’s containing a rdm, especially post lvl 60, a whm really cannot even come close to comparing with a rdm in terms of debuffing. The difference between an A+ lvl skill and a C ;-; lvl skill is just too much (at lvl 75 a rdm has a whopping 51 more enfeebling skill points than a whm). Does that mean you shouldn’t have your enfeebling maxed? Absolutely not! Debuffing is extremely important and for a rdm to cast all debuffs (Para, slow, gravity, blind, silence, Dia2/Bio2) can be very mana-intensive even to those convert-happy rdms! Before you begin hunting, as you make your way to camp, offer to help the rdm with Dia2 or Bio2, the most mp-expensive spells (costing a whopping 59 and 66 mp respectively). If you notice that a rdm’s spell has been resisted and he is not bothering to recast or his recast timer is not yet up, feel free to back him up and throw an enfeeble at the monster (for some spells like silence, this can sometimes be critical). In PT’s without a rdm, it is even more important that you have maxed enfeebling as you will be counted on to usually at least paralyze+slow the enemy. During the course of a battle, if you notice a debuff has worn off, and the mob does not have low health yet, be sure to recast (esp paralyze), as it can really save you a lot of mp in the long run. I also have macros to throw on all my enfeebling equipment at the time I cast my debuffs. With an enfeebling torque (+7), Elite Beret (+4), AF3 body (+10), Master Caster Bracelets(+7) I can augment my enfeebling to a respectable lvl (at lvl 75 as a whm my enfeebling is 253, comparable to a lvl 71 nekkid rdm (cap 256)).

One of the things that has really REALLY helped me in debuffing is to be able to clearly see what debuffs are on and have stuck and what has been resisted. To do this, change the color of the text that states what debuffs have landed/been resisted. In my setup I have in bright red text debuffs that have been resisted, a deep purple for buffs that have stuck, and green for enhancements. My eye tends to ignore the greens (hastes, bard songs, etc), but it is really hard for me to miss the bright reds and purples, so I am usually pretty aware of what debuffs are on at what time and what needs to be casted.

    BUFFING
I’m sure that all of you already know how mp-efficient and wonderful the Regen line of spells is, so I won’t talk about that much except to say that you should always, always be using regen on your main (non-ninja) tank. I typically debuff, then cast my highest regen on the main tank (I don’t like to lead with regen b/c I don’t want to waste any of those precious ticks of restorative health). Other good uses of regen are casting on the puller as he goes out to seek or is coming back hurt from pulling, and when your main tank is in good shape, using the appropriate lvl regen spell on mildly hurt other members. Another use of regen is after you have flashed a mob and you want to heal someone, but don’t want to draw agro, be sure to use say, a regen 2 instead of a cure 3 as the cure 3 is far more likely to cause you to gain agro.

Bar spells+protectra+shellra – These are pretty basic. You want them on at all times against appropriate mobs. Run up and recast them as they wear out.

One of the most controversial spells that I see talked about is the use of haste and who to use it on. Haste is a very mana-expensive spell for a whm, so you must be extremely judicious in your use of it and who to cast it on. But it is also incredibly, incredibly powerful so you must use it when you can as mp allows. I know that some ppl don’t like to use haste on plds, only on nin tanks, but I also play a 62 pld so let me tell you that it’s almost as important as refresh for me as a pld! The key with haste is that it cuts not only the delay on your weapons, but (this is key) ALL your job abilities and spell recasts by about 10-12%!!! If you don’t see the value in this, let me explain briefly. Without haste, a pld can only reuse flash once every 45seconds. With it, he can cast this spell roughly every 28-30 seconds! Same thing with shield bash, sentinel, rampart, etc they can be used every 4:15-4:20 instead of 5 mins. This allows him to gain more agro and lets everyone cut loose more without worry, resulting in more efficient exp gains. Against extremely hard-hitting mobs, I even haste myself - With me and the PLD flashing every 15 seconds or so, it really mitigates the damage you take over time. For these same reasons, with a ninja tank, it is imperative that you keep haste on him at all times so that he can recast utsusemi quicker. With a ninja tank, you also generally have to cure less, so I tend to haste more of the melee members so that they can gain tp faster.

    DURING BATTLE
After you’ve debuffed and buffed, it’s now time for you to get down to business and put into practice what you learned aeons ago in whm 101 - Keeping your PT and yourself alive. People often ask what lvl cure to use when? Unfortunately, there is no simple answer and it is again dependent on what mobs you are fighting and the makeup of your PT. The most basic method of healing is to use lower lvl cures and then when u fall behind, use a Cure one lvl up to catch up. This way has several advantages in that you tend not to waste mp by over-healing and you draw less agro in general. With a competent rdm, they can assist you in healing w/low lvl cures and it will be very difficult for you to get agro with regen + both mages sharing the aggression of curing. In most situations, this will be the technique you will use most often. However, in certain cases, with the right PT, it can be more mp-efficient for you to use the sit- big cure – sit method of healing. Typically this involves you making sure that Regen is on the tank, then topping them off or getting them close, and then sitting and allowing them to take some dmg while you sit and get mp back. When they have taken enough dmg that your biggest Cure will land and not heal them to full, you pop up, heal them, cast regen again, and sit back down to regain mp. This technique works best with galka tanks + plds, who can take an enormous amount of beating and/or heal themselves before you actually have to stand up and cure them. You must also have a competent rdm in your PT to handle the debuffs, as you will be unable to cast them while you are sitting. Be sure to let your tank and rdm know if you want to use this method, otherwise they will be prone to thinking that you are slacking or missing your heals and will cure b4 they let the tank drop low enough in HP. Another condition is that you are not fighting a monster that gives any kind of status ailment that needs immediate addressing (torama’s etc.). And your healing skill should be of sufficient lvl so that your biggues cure is MP efficient. As you can see, using this method requires a lot of conditionals, but given these it can really work well if you give it a try. Later on it becomes even more powerful when you get items like the dark staff or errant gear (MP/tick items).

If you are fighting an aoe-atk type mob like darters or something, at later lvls don’t be afraid of using a low-lvl curaga I or even II at end-game. A good pld or nin+thf can hold agro from these spells quite easily later on (usually only melee is hit so you are curing a maximum of roughly 90x3=270HP). If you are worried, work in a stoneskin or blink into your casting routine when fighting these enemies.

During battle you must also make sure to get rid of most status effects ASAP. Again, changing the color of the text will help you to see who has been afflicted with what. Things like paralyze on the tank must be taken off of right away, as a paralyze on a provoke or even shield bash etc will drive a pld absolutely crazy. The only things that are ok to wait on are any kind of low-lvl poison (like you encounter at the Crawler’s nest) and viruna on non-sitting melee. For poison, its ok to cast on the pld at the end of battle since the pld will likely need to sit. Some people say erase is not necessary and in reality it isn’t…but, it is extremely useful against and makes you a better and more efficient whm against conditions like def-down, str-down etc. Also be very very sure that you are aware of the enemy special attacks which cause status effects but do not list them in the log (things like Black Cloud - aoe blindness, Ice break – aoe bind, etc). As a whm you should memorize these and cast the appropriate curative spell immediately.

      POST-FIGHT
Use the appropriate lvl regen on damaged PT members (can begin this process as the battle is winding down). If taking a heavy aoe atk like a bomb, now is a good time for those lovely divine seal – curagas. Cure lingering detrimental status effects, equip your mp/tick items, and sit as soon as you possibly can!

      USING FLASH
The other controversial spell that whms talk about is using the spell flash. Controversial, because I have heard that some people say you should not use flash b/c of the agro it draws. People, PLEASE do not listen to this bad advice! Flash is a simply incredible spell and used properly is one of the defining spells of the whm and what sets us apart from all those rdm, smn, etc. whm-wannabes! ^_- Especially once you receive your AF armor, the –Emnity really allows you to be more liberal in your usage of flash. When a ninja is hit and his utsusemi guard is broken, would you rather keep him alive with multiple medium lvl cures (draining huge amnts of precious mp) while he tries to recast and is taking heavy dmg from normal/special atks (and could be interrupted again) or would u rather cast one flash spell which buys him enough time to recast? When fighting a heavy hitting darksteel golem or Ladon in an exp PT, haste yourself and alternate flashes with your pld every 15 secs! Solo-ing and you need to get stoneskin up? Flash and then begin casting ss! However, one thing to be careful of is overlapping your pld’s flash. To prevent this, I usually wait for my pld to flash and then give it 5 secs or so, then use my own (or wait until he gets hit). You can also time flash to prevent high damage physical enemy WS attacks like Goblin Rush, Heavy Strike, aoe Claw atk from tigers. Mob making a beeline for one of your fellow squishies in the back row? Flash it. And one of the very best uses for flash is when you are using a Ninja+ Thf combination PT. On the initial setup of SATA, flash as the 2ndary tank provokes (provoke is stronger than flash when simultaneously used) and the thf, if competent, should be able to set up SATA b4 the 2ndary tank takes more than 1 hit. All of these uses for a simple 25mp which can prevent 2-3 normal atks or a high dmg special atk…So really, if you are NOT using flash you are really limiting yourself and what you bring to the table as a whm.

      EQUIPMENT
The equipment that made the most noticeable difference in my career as a whm was definitely the dark + light staff. When I finally squirreled away enough gil to get both of these items, I finally felt like I was able to perform as I believe square intended the whm to be - the top healer in the game. Really, I strongly advice saving up for these and even advertising them in your search comments, they make that big a difference.

Hmm, since this turned out way longer than I thought, I’ll include an:

      ABOUT THE AUTHOR (lol)

Kittystalker is a lvl 75 novice kittycat whm/blm found on Asura and a proud member of the Syndicate LS. Please feel free to say hello or give tips to her in game if you catch her online! She lvled from 1-75 in mostly all pickup PT’s so has experienced many different types of PT configurations, both NA + JPN. If you have any advice to add about playing whm, especially WHM/SMN, it would be greatly appreciated as she has no formal experience w/that job combination.

Thanks for your time everyone! =^-^=

                  /clap /praise

Excellent information. Congratulations! on your LV75 achievement!.

The ideas on Flash are very interesting. I may try to incorporate that into my playing style.

I've just recently started playing WHM/SMN and I am really loving it. I love Auto Refresh and Blink + Shining Ruby. Though, I still have to do some serious partying to determine if Blinkga is really all that good for the amount of MP it costs to summon Garuda and then cast. My tanks seem to really like Shining Ruby however.

At any rate, I totally agree with you on Haste. I haste my Paladin or Ninja always. If I see I can have spare MP left over, I usually haste the jobs wielding 2 handed weapons or dual wielding over anyone else. So its something like Tank > 2 Handers or Duals > 1 Handers.

Regen is the power of XP Chains. USE IT!

Flash is cheap, not really a big investment (i think like 5k on my server).

and yes, awesome advice for that. people think i'm crazy until they see it work.

i'll set up SAnTA without a second voker, Flash + Stoneskin is enough for me.

good tip about Haste, i don't know why i don't do that. having PLD + WHM be able to cast Flash more often would be great.

very good advice.. as a 54 whm even I found some of the information useful.. i may use flash more as u suggested.. I also need to get a dark staff.. price has been coming down a lot on Ifrit.. its about 215k right now, but im saving up for Raise II.. lol I guess i gotta save up for dark staff I really need it

as for haste, I cast it usually on the drk etc that have a lot of delay on their weapons, it seems to help and the drk appreciate it.. I cast it on the PLD depending on the mana situation..
