Hey, I've reached lv15 and I've bought this spell. I know it keeps some monsters from smelling (detecting) you, but what monsters does this actually work for?

the uses of deoderize
Deoderize only effects:
A) Undead when your life is yellow/orange/red.
B) Various monsters that use scent to party aggro.
There are no monsters that aggro from neutral by scent, all monsters which use it require prior provocation. With undead when your life is lower your aggro range increases by a percentage (I don't have the exact numbers). While if you aggro say, a Coeurl (cat-like creature in Meriphataud Mountains) and your party begins to fight it but something goes wrong and you can't take it! Your party scatters to the wind! One member runs to a zone, the Coeurl will now track the rest of the members all across the mountians until they zone or it is killed. (Though I have not had personal experiences with this to 100% confirm it.)
If you cast deoderize on your party members after someone zones that monster, it will not return to fight the rest.

One problem - Deodorize does not last long. I can imagine you casted that on the whole party and it goes away before you even get to the 4th person.Elathia :: Hume :: Female :: San d'Oria rank 7 :: WHM70 | BLM52 | RDM24 | THF15 >> Cerberus //Retired

... I don't know where you got your information from, but I'm very certain that deodorize does not affect monsters that detect low life. This is easy enough to test. Get yellow life, cast sneak and deodorize and rest next to an undead.
Deodorize affects monsters that track you. Some monsters give up after chasing you for a while because they lose you, some monsters don't because they detect scent and will hunt you down and kill you. This is in no way important to a white mage because whether a monster gives up or not (if it can't detect smell) is dependant on how much hate it has and how long it has spent chasing you without hitting you.
There is one tested use for Deodorize: if you play beastmaster, you can use Deodorize to do "Ghetto releases" from level 30-34. Here's what it means: Take beetles in Altepa, you charm an even match beetle - it will uncharm in 10 minutes and attack you. However, with ghetto releases, if you are a certain distance from your pet when your pet uncharms (about just shy of seeing it's lifebar disappear), it will not chase after you and aggro you. BUT since beetles detect scent, it will hunt you down and attack you even though you are far enough from the beetle.
Solution: cast Deodorize, which must be on for the instant during which the monster gets uncharmed (do not cast it after the monster gets uncharmed - it will not work). The beetle will lose your scent and will not attack you (provided you're the given distance away).
Yes, this is highly specialized, but it is the only testable and replicable use of Deodorize (Sleep + Deodorize + running away does not seem to work, maybe it creates too much hate).I believe most sigs are like the people they represent - useless, loud and obnoxious.

here's a better way to test it:
get yellow life, run behind an undead so that it can not see you. if you are low enough level, it will aggro you.
get yellow life, cast deoderize and do the same thing. if it works then the undead will not aggro you (i don't know, i have not tested it).
all undead aggro by sight anyway (as far as i have seen), so make sure that you are running behind it. also, it's better if the undead is just {too weak} for your level, so that you have a chance to kill it or can warp out easier. from my experience, undead aggro low life even if it's a little bit {too weak}.Check out this internet radio station!

This is getting frustrating... There was a very similar post the other day where similar misunderstandings were voiced.
First, all undead aggro by sound (Hounds, Skeletons, Ghosts, Shadows, Doomed).
here are lists of what everything aggros to:
http://mysterytour.web.infoseek.co.j...nster/view.htm
http://ff11.s33.xrea.com/cgi/index.cgi
All families of mobs aggro the same way, though certain members of the family may ignore certain methods (it's additive). Crawlers do not aggro, Soldier Crawlers aggro by sound. No skeletons link. As far as I know, no crabs link, though some aggro to sound. All bats (single or triple) link, some aggro to sound.
There are 3 detection methods that monsters employ:
1.) Sound (running behind them does not prevent them from aggroing). Crabs, Crawlers, Bats, Quadavs, Undead, etc.
2.) Sight (running behind them does prevent them from aggroing). Yagudo, Orcs, Beetles, Bombs, etc.
3.) Magic (casting within a certain range causes them to aggro). Elementals, Bombs, etc.
Monsters may pursue you based on your scent.
That is when deodorize comes in. The monsters known to pursue by scent have a 0 in the column that says 'ofactory pursuit' on the Vana'diel Monsters website if you run it through babelfish.altavista.com's translator.
As far as I know, Deodorize will not prevent you from getting a low hp aggro from undead. I cannot guarantee this though, because I have not had sufficient reason to test it. I do recall a few instances (particularly with the ghasts on the way to Norg) where party member had deodorize cast on them with yellow or red hp and were aggroed and killed, even through sneak.
Finally to clear up the last bit...
All aggro monsters will aggro you, even if they /check as too weak to be worthwhile, while you are healing.
If you cast the spell to prevent detection (sneak in the case of undead, bats, etc., invis in the case of yagudo, beetles, etc.) they will not aggro you while healing.
Casting sneak on yourself then healing next to a skeleton will not get you aggro. However, if you have yellow HP it may aggro you while healing, I'm not certain in this regard.

that isn't detection of low life, that's detection of resting, they are completely different.

Wrong. Walk up to any weak undead, and start healing right next to it.. It will indeed agro you.
From what I have observed, there is no such thing as 'detection by resting' (that is, something that will aggro you simply because you rest with no other methods of detection), but instead resting effectively lowers you level to 1 for calculating chance of aggro. This means something that is 'too weak' to you normally but would aggro you if you were level 1 will aggro you by the same methods it normally would if you were in fact level 1. For example, Yagudos detect by sight only. The Yagudos in Sarutabaruta would not normally aggro me since they are all too weak. If I rest without Invisible infront of one, it will attack. However, if I am invisible while I rest, I will not be attacked.
that isn't detection of low life, that's detection of resting, they are completely different.
The reason Locus suggested what he did is because if you have Sneak cast on you, the undead will not detect you by sound. It's only other method is by hitpoints. If Deodorize conceals hit point detection, then if both sneak and deodorize were cast on you and you started resting beside any undead, it would not attack you. If it does attack you, it would mean that Deodorize does not conceal low hit points.Rhayn ~ Windurst Rank 8
