  • Should I even buy weapons?

Ok. I want to become a summoner, so i'm leveling a WHM for the subjob. Since I'm only leveling my WHM to level 36 should i even bother buying these expensive staves? I know they add extra MP and HP but all a WHM should be doing is healing. They shouldn't need to attack with their weapon unless they solo right? plus since a SUMMONER uses the same equipment as a WHM shouldn't i just wait until i get to a SUMMONER? Please post your suggestions.

    Buying another I.D: $1.00

You get the +MP and +HP bonus from a weapon, whether you use it or not. The +MP staffs can really help, its your call on how much you want to spend on them. SMN can use the same equipment as ure WHM since they both need to focus on MP.

though i've been either hume or elvaan when lving whm, I lv'd my staff skill. i dont see why whms cant lv a weapon's skill on enemies with no disastrous area attacks. my search comment was usually (old elvaan whm/smn):

      @ **** to lv* Club & sheild>ok
Dmg club and casting club 7 avatar
Dont invite me unless I can keep club capped.

and I always got enough invites and was harrassed with them in valk/qufim/yhaotor/garlaige

        "harrassed with them in valk/qufim/yhaotor/garlaige"

anymage will get harrassed for invites in those zones, including ones with retarted and shitty subs, like the 29blm/1whm, or the 28rdm/8 war,

the funny part of that startment was the rdm was in the group when i was invited, and his provoke macro said
"get off my mages <t> your doom awaits you"
i couldn't do much except inwardly groan about that one

Is sounds like you are going directly to Summoner at level 36 without having any of the prime avatars (Ifritt, Garuda, Leviathon, Shiva, Fenrir etc etc etc). This is considered a bad idea. Instead get your WHM up to lvl 70, get all the Avatars and then switch to Summoner.

A summoner with only Carbunkle is totally (and I do mean totaly) useless in a party.Check out the SMN forum for lots of details.

The SMN forum indicates the lvl 20 Avatars solo fights are considerably harder than the group fight. They require significant skill in battle with the best equipment and the best possible food, none of which is cheap and maybe not even available to a lvl 36 WHM.

The odds are firmly stacked against the "novice" lvl 20 SMN (I.E. a SMN who doesn't have a lvl 60+ job) due to poor equipment, lack of general experience and no gil toi buy food.

Of course if he has the skill and the cash and the equipment he could get all the avatars long before me and best of luck to him. I just don't like seeing SMNs running around with only Carbunkle because they think its cool to be a SMN. All SMN should have the avatars before they start leveling their SMN seriously (Blink + Stoneskin maybe not Fenrir but preferably).

I personally get wands for the +mnd bonus, at level 25 I currently have +15 mnd in gear. I figure any advantage you can get is good. Better gear = faster exp.

As far as the summoning goes, getting to level 20 with summoner I figure is an easier task then trying to get a job up to level 70 and find a group to help you with the quest. But I farm a lot, so I have confidence in my ability to afford to get the summonings when I go for them.

i only did shiva and ifrit and its not that hard. i went in with average lv 20 stuff:
                  Freesword's Staff
Silver Haripin (or whatever lv20 hairpin is)
                  Doublet
                  white mitts
                  black slacks
                  lv20 solea
                  mp+2 rings x2
                  mp+2 earrings x2
                  friar's rope
                  cotton cape
                  yag drinks (6k)
                  ethers (10-20k)
6 boiled crabs (forgot, but under 14k)

all of them i got with 30 whm and a few hours farming/guilding.
I didnt even use all the medicines/foods

any whm lv30 can get these items in a few days...

and i dont get why the have to have them when they start. useful pt abilities arent even gained til lv level 19.

Arguably lvl 25 for Garuda's Party Blink. Practically speaking there's very little difference between a lvl 1-24 SMN with all summons, and a 1-24 one with only Carbuncle (player-skill is a different matter, entirely, of course).

Just because WHM is going to be a sub for your SMN doesn't mean you don't need good equip for it. Staves aren't that expensive at all btw.

Using bad equip -just because it's your sub- annoys the hell out of everyone else you party with unless they're completely retarded >.>

Though I'm not saying you have to wear Astral Rings, I know it's fairly impossible to buy them at that level unless you're very lucky.

About the summons, from about level37-39 it's fair to demand a SMN with Fenrir in your PT.. Which you can't get without a Lv70 job.

                      End rant.
