  • Cure5 and the rdm woe

no this is not a rdm /cry I want cure5 back thread,

I have found that since I have started pt'ing with whm's that have attained this spell, the majority of whm will use this spell exclusively, on the tank, and also will demand that I dump at least 2 cure3's on the tank before they will cast their cure5,

this is all well and good, as an rdm it is my job to keep ppl alive when the main healer needs a hand,

but to do my other duties I must have a system, an order to my casting,

usually it goes something like this,

    Puller notifies target found,
    I cast refresh on self
    Puller arrives
    I cast 2 debuffs, <cool down period for refresh>
    I cast refresh on pld
    I cast 2 more debuffs
    I cast Refresh on whm
I cast 1 debuff and recast a failed debuff
    I cast Refresh on blm
    I cast Haste on pld
I cast Refresh on drk if he needs it,
By this time the mob is usually dead,
when my refresh runs out I rinse and repeat,
it is very rare that I will ever stop casting for 20 secs, <the time it takes for the initial /heal tick> hence rarely if ever do I get a chance to /heal

During this there are accepted interruptions,
    Add's Slept,
AOE's dmg on mgs and dmg dlrs
    Dispelling mob buffs
    MB's

but if the whm wants me to cure3 at least twice the tank to one of his cure5's this is very disruptive,

the only thing that I can think of to warrant sole cure5'ing would be that the whm is wearing many many "+mp while healing" items, hence even a 21 sec tic of the healing period gains you back +21 from refresh and 10+Clear Mind +whatever the items give you, covering maybe a 1/4 of the total cost of cure5, then they wait for the Tank to take at least 7-800 dmg to cast the cure5, then /heal for another 20secs,

I understand the above concept, and agree that it is an alternate to the norm, and a way to ration mp, a whm has around 800mp pool, I have access to 1600,

I find since lvl 41 rdm's become a little detached from the PT, and generally run independent of what the PT is doing, whether they are resting after a battle or are in one, since 41 it has been drilled into the rdm's psyche that mp is the only thing stopping the xp chain,

ok, think of it this way,
    Refresh lasts 2mins 30secs,
every 2m30s I have to cycle through the pt's casters, starting with my self so that I know immediately when I need to start the recast, I doesn't matter if the fight lasts 30secs or 5mins the recast is a drop everything and cast situation,

I was hoping to avoid further arguments over /p between me and the whm, is there anything I can do to break this all too frequent situation? the interruption does cause myself major issues, and seems to create nervousness on the part of the tank as well,

look, im a really "happy go luckly" guys hence i chose RDM, i dont like arguing, especially trying to use the AutoTranslator

I am still a few levels away from Cure V so I can't really comment.

I heard that Cure V has lower (significatly lower) enmity than Cure IV so the extra heal + decreased enmity is major advatage to Cure V.

I would be interested to find out the rationale of the WHM in this instance. The RDM perspective is clearly focused on Refresh and debuffing whilst the WHM is entirely on healing the party with the minimum MP loss. Perhaps these two objective start to clash when Cure V is avialable.
Maybe both the RDM and WHM need to strike a new balance to keep everything moving nicely.

actually, post cure v, im irritated by rdms who cast cure spells. backup healers tend to panic when the tank gets a little yellow because theyre used to spamming cure iii...whereas im waiting for them to get lower so that cure v heals for its full amount. cure v is the only cure spell i have a party chat line for, in order to avoid cure overlap...but many backup healers inexplicably will overlap my cures even after seeing that line..wasting both their mp and mine. its quite frustrating.

if anything i want my backup healers to heal less, i dont know why your whm is complaining.

As Sylvanus says this is wierd. I know how busy our set party rdm is, and I'm almost always capable of keeping up with healing. If bad things happen and I get low on mp I obviously expect him to help keep our pld alive, but to ask something like this is odd. I regulate our pld's hp very exactingly if possible to allow him to keep max hate with his own cures, and doing something like this seems like it would mess that up.

i agree i prefer to have backup healer heal the AOE damages if needed because with a good PLD tank i will only use about about 1/4 1/5 of my mp per VT or IT battle because once you get the length of time it takes to kill the mob and how much damage tank is taking, and with Regen, it's very easy to rest during middle or about 20 seconds before the end of the battle to start gaining mp again. when a rdm is casting cures all over it confuses me on who to heal.

After 41 ~ on what you said. Well that has always been the life of a WHM. Now you as a RDM knows how it feels.

Hmm...I dont even have Cure IV yet..let alone V... but my only request I'd make for a RDM is to enfeeble and back me up whenever possible, it just seems easier for them this way. Just wouldnt be right to tell another healer what Cure # they *must* use before I break my big cure gun out.

I never, ever ask RDMs to help heal unless I'm busy casting something else and the main tank goes deep in the red. It shouldn't be necessary (and almost never happens to me) at level 61+ unless I'm out of MP. RDM MP is better spent casting Refresh and Enfeebles.

The reasons why I prefer to cast Cure V are simple:

              (1) Cure V is more MP-efficient (by a significant margin) than any other Cure spell IF I can heal for the full amount (slightly over 600HP, depending on equipment/skill)

              (2) Cure V also produces significantly less enmity than Cure IV, and only slightly more than Cure III *per cast*. Considering that I'd have to cast more than 3 Cure IIIs to equal one Cure V, there's no question about which spell I prefer to use to avoid aggro.

There are, of course, cases where using Cure V this way is a bad idea (i.e. Tarutaru PLD tank vs. enemy with very strong attack such as a Prime Avatar), so in those cases I just stick to Cure III, but with the higher HP tanks, Cure V provides a very efficient way to keep the main tank healed.

I think his main problem is the whm expecting him to keep up the cures while the whm gets a couple ticks of resting in. While this might be more efficient for the whm, I can see where the rdm would get upset. Its a fine line to balance on and really works better if you had 2 whms where one cures while other rests style (wouldn't have a rdm in it usually). As for a solution to the problem, try to explain you don't have the mp or time to throw in the cures is all I can suggest.

Thank you all for your input,

                  It has been very helpful,

in situations where i cannot convey my reluctance for this method of MP rationing, ill simply stretch my enfeebles out, and prey i can remember the last cast,

                  i appreciate your replies,
