  • Elvaan white mage??

Hey guys i've been playing this game a bit as an elvaan monk but i wanted to check out white mage. I would really rather not have to start over and i don't want to make two seperate characters. So my question is, can elvaans make a decent white mage. I know they have a high mind stat but will the low mp really cripple me? If eating food or good equipment is the answer i will stick with him.

Well thank you in advance for any info/advice!!

Its very possible, but its like changing the game difficulty setting from easy (be taru whm) to hard (elveen). You will have very little spare mp for when things go wrong, but at least you can take a few hits without worry. Any race is possible for whm, its just a matter of how hard you want the game to be. I would really suggest just making another char since you will eventually get a mule or two anyway, might as well make them useful.

I am a lvl 45 Elvaan WHM, I have 488mp with BLM subbed, and althought its a little harder than a Taru mage, its not that bad. I wouldnt say (hard) in level, more like (medium).

As an Elvaan though you need to focus alot on +MP equipment, some +MND isnt bad either but MP is more important..

Right now my equipment gives me +120 mp, which is alot, and cost alot, but i love the reaction i get when in a PT with a Taru mage and im only 30-40mp les than them...

      2 Electrum rings +20mp each
      1 Electrum Hairpin +25 mp
      RSE gloves +24mp

and some other stuff, staff +10mp etc...

I plan on gettin a holy phial as well, +9MP and +3MND

Its easy to do with the right equipment, and beware of the forum Nazis that swear up and down that an Elvaan whm sucks..because you WILL hear it..

Using non-conventional races for a job doesn't make it 'suck'. However, like others have already said, it just makes the road ahead of you a bit harder.

What does make your character suck big time is if you neglected your spells/gears. Tarutarus are born with more MP, so they can get lazy a little bit without fall straight to suck-dom. As an Elvaan though, you will have to always be on the top of your game. Get all your spells and the best gears gils can buy.

Just remember one thing though, even though your are Elvann, you are stil a white mage when you play one. Don't go thinking the race makes you uber melee all of a sudden. A LS mate of mine met someone who calls himself a 'tactical whitemage' a while back. This guy would refuse to cure others in battle. Instead, he ran right up to the monster and bashed it with a hammer.

lmao 'tactical whitemage' sounds sweet what race do you think would be best for that??

Well j/k but thank you for the replies, i've decided to stick it out with my elvaan and i figure a little challenge never hurt anyone.

            elvaan whm is fun

it teaches you how to manage your mp better. we have more than enough mp for most any situation, (exp for sure at least) but you cant afford to be careless like a taru can.

I had the same doubts as you when I switched from war to whm.
Elvaan white mage is very doable, and if mage is your cup of tea, it's really quite fun.
I'd have to agree that playing Elvaan white mage will make you a sharper player. Even though they've probably been overstated before, abide by these rules:
1.Keep that subjob leveled ! (rdm with fast cast might sound nice, but you need all the mp you can get, so I'd advise blm.)
2.Don't overcure, rest if no one needs healing
3.Keep gears and spellbook up to date. (Start getting RSE at 27 and get electrum gear at 40)
4.Use food. If you dont have cooking leveled, look into it. Always have juice ready to go in case a battle goes wrong.
5.Try to party with Bards. Mages Ballad is key.
The biggest advantage to playing an Elvaan mage:
When a mob starts hating you, you can type /slap instead of running and hiding under a rock.

ive been near close to death many times as a taru BLm and for some reason it always seems to be a Elvaan WHM getting me out of trouble , yea it takes them awhile to gather there MP(resting 30+ seconds after casting raise)but I see no reason for them to be counted out of the picture.

An Elvaan white mage works out very well if you can keep up on equipment. I played an Elvaan white mage in the import, and I restarted him in the NA release. I have a set PT, and it has never been a problem that I am Elvaan. I would recommend that you get as many MP+ items as possible. At level 50, I have the following equipment:

                    Blessed Hammer (AF1, MP+10)
Holy Phial (MP+9 MND+3) - Hunt the NM in Beadeaux for this
Electrum Hairpin (HP-10 MP+20) - Upgrade to Gold at 50
                    Electrum Rings x 2 (HP-20 MP+20)
Royal Squire's Robe (MP+10) - Use CP to buy this
                    Magna Gauntlets (MP+24 DEX+2 INT+1) - Quest
                    Magna M Chausses (HP+12 MP+12 DEX+2 AGI+2) - Quest
                    Magna M Ledelsens (MP+20 AGI+3 INT+2) - Quest
                    Adept's Rope (HP+8 MP+8) - BCNM50 for Forest Stone at 50
                    Enhancing Earring (HP+5 MP+5)
                    Black Earring (MP+4)
                    Aurora Mantle (MP+10)

I have never had to use food for any of my PTing experiences. It has always worked out really well for me. I would recommend casting Regen (or Regen II later) on your tank and the puller if they are different. It definitely helps out with the amount of MP that you use over the course of a battle. You can definitely take a few shots whenever you are an Elvaan WHM. At this point, I think I have something like 708HP and 650MP. I know Mithras that have less MP than I do. ^^ Be sure to keep your subjob leveled, equipment up-to-date, and spells up-to-date.

you shouldnt be getting hit in the first place

but for those situations where you just cant prevent it, *all* whms need to make good use of stoneskin/blink. i may have 200-300 more hp, but with paper thin defense, that means one or two more hits. nothing in comparison to the mp difference.

I totally agree with that. Whats with the "hit me, I'm casting" pose they do?

I highly doubt that at any level but exactly lv40 a taru whm would have just 30-40 mp more than an elvaan whm. Why? A taru whm would be wearing the same +mp gear (*maybe* not the electrum rings), and as such, would have something like 100-150 more mp. Taru's just get lazy is all lol. Taru = Too Weak, Mithra = Decent Challange, Hume = Even Match, Elvaan = Tough or Very Tough (depends on your funds), Galka = Incredibly Tough.

Yes, I skipped easy prey to show the difference even between taru's and mithra's.

That being said, in the upper levels, when you'll really have less MP than a taru, it won't matter as much, as you'll *usually* have a rdm/xx right there with you to help casting. Add that a blm/whm can help cure as well...and the pld cures himself...and you'll find that you'll always have enough mp to go to chain 3 and 4 easily. Chain 5 is where you'll have a little more trouble, but it's so rare to find a full party that can coordinate well enough to *consistently* get chain 5 on IT's that it shouldn't really bother you.

A good investment would be Roast Mushroom. They add +15 mp (pretty decent at all levels, to be honest), but the main reason to eat them is for the +mp regeneration. Since you'll be trying to med back a lot of your mp, these can help you out. With a good pld though, you usually can med for a large portion of the fights without much trouble, so these would make you have to med even less, so those chain 5's would come easier.

Really...the only time it hurts are the lower levels were +mp gear is scarce, or absurdly expensive (astrals...what first time mage could afford astrals...honestly). From the time you start getting RSE on, however, it gets easier and easier.
