Hi, I'm a whm and the only mage in my regular party (2 war, 1 whm, we're young). My friends have recently gotten a handle on skillchaining and I'd love to pull off a burst afterward but due to most spells being light and them having no light chains yet, it's pretty limited. However several of the other elemental spells tend to fall under enhancing spells. Can these still be used for bursting even tho they are defensive spells (ex following detonation with barstonra)? also weaponskills seem to take the same amount of time so the general rule i guess warriors are following is 2-3 seconds after an allie's weaponskill animation but spell casting times vary a lot, how does this affect the timing of bursting? Should I hit cast 2-3 seconds after the second weaponskill animation ends or realize that if a cast takes say 5 seconds that i should cast much earlier like when the second animation starts?

Nope.. enhancing magic won't work.
Only aggressive spells will give you the burst. I.e, elemental and divine. Dark probably too, provided you find a dark elemental skillchain.BRD75/WHM75/BLM75/RDM75/SMN70/NIN67/MNK33/WAR33/THF15/etc

If you wanted to MB you would cast right before, during, or right after the person uses the ending WS depending on Cast Time. Stone would be right after, but something like Blizzaga would be right before.

What level are you and your warrior friends?
If you have one warrior with sword skill of 30, and one warrior uses either an axe or great axe, they can skill chain for the fusion effect.
First warrior would use burning blade and the second would use raging axe or shield break. Fision effect allows mb for light and fire, so you could throw in dia and banish.
The good thing is that this chain is good to use against quite a few monsters (goblins, worms, beetles, bats, mushrooms, dogs, ghosts, weopons, leeches, scorpions, shadows, bombs, bones, bulbs, tigers, malboros, and mandoras.)
Another plus is that your warriors could switch weopons around and skill up those three weopons. Axe and Great axe being a warrior's best two weopons.

Thanks for the replies, bummer about not using enhancing spells, didn't think but had read someone saying that. Wait tok you saying it can be used or just recommending the timings? hmmm didn't know about light for fusion. so wait, some combinations have 2 elements, cool. unfortunately my warriors don't primarily use swords, one uses scyth and has slice, dark harvest, other is on axe and great axe with raging axe, shield break... don't think he's got the 40 skill ones yet but should really soon. Just got slow tho so there's a scission to practice with. Thanks again.

The trouble wih scission is that it is an earth effect. I don't even know of a monster that has a weakness to earth. I try to match skill chain effect to the weakness of the monsters I am fighting. This allows for more skill chain damage and mb damage.
You may want to try pointing this out to your friends and try to talk the sythe wielder into swithing to sword and shield for the time being. If he is using sythe just to skill it up for dark knight, he won't have any trouble keeping it maxed for the level as he levels that class. The shield will help with tanking.
Btw, you can still use the scission effect if you wanted two with a sword. Just use fast blade instead of slice.
What tokitoki was try to relate was that when you start casting for an mb depends on the casting time. Some spells have a greater then 5 seconds casting time, so they have to be started before the last weopon skill is in.
Here is a more advanced trick for you. Time banish so that it lands just after the last weopon skill (if you get them to use fusion), and then immidiatly cast dia. If you time this right you will get two magic bursts.
I only did this a few times myself, to busy healing

cool! thanks for the tips kebrok. trying that tonight. From what I found so far Issaac is that birds and several other flying creatures are weak to ice. and the only thing i could dig up that's weak to earth was a thunder elemental which i doubt i'll be fighting anytime soon.

Is that right or how do i know the weekness or monsters?
Fire Elemental = Water
Pugil/Crab = Ice/Lightning
Birds(Carrion Crow, Vulture) = Ice
Worm=Air/Holy
Once you find a monster's weakness, it applies to its whole family(mob skin).

Bombs are weak to fire....
Anyway I use the chart at the bottom of this skill chain chart to help me figure out elemental weakness.

yet to try it but cure does some nice damage against monsters of the skeleton and hound family so if burst spells have to be offensive ones, cure should work right? Also what other families can take cure damage?....hmmm i forget if it works on fungars.
