Mule is just having an extra character (1$ extra a month) to have extra AH space.

So... how do they share space? Do I have to give the item to some other person...and then log in as the other character...then flip back again... etc etc.

      Extra space *would* be nice.

No you just send the items/gils to your secondary(mule) character through the currier system. Then you log onto your mule and go to your mog and get the items/gils. Place your items in storage or sell your things in the bazaar while you are afk for sleep or whatever.

And as you do the transfer of items between your main character and your mule with the delivery box system, there is no reason for the two to be in the same city. And when you have two characters in two different cities, you can profit from the differences in prices between cities.

Some differences are just between AH prices, you can buy something cheap in one AH, deliver it to another city, and sell it more expensively there. But some items are sold on a permanent basis by NPCs in one city, and are more expensive in the AH of another city. For example all the Bar-something spell scrolls can be bought in the magic shop in Jeuno, and sell for up to twice the cost in the auction houses of the starting cities.

That is how you transform your "$1 extra" into gil.

A good way to use a mule is to have mules in cities you aren't a citizen of. So if your initial character is in Sand, have a mule in Wind and Bastock. There are times when you'll want to buy something from a city that is Ranked 1. Having a mule there, you can buy those items in which you want. Just send gils to that mule of the city and buy it.
Also instead of having to travel to those cities to search stores and AH, just log onto that mule and take a look for what you need. Then send gils to that mule and buy it. It makes it efficient for time and gils you spend to get to whatever city you want to check.
