Macro set #1
I have all my Cure spells on the alt line and status cures on the ctrl line
Macro set #2
Enfeeble spells, both whm and blm on alt. Enhancing spells on the ctrl (protectra, shell, all bar line spells)
Macro set #3
Blm elemental/darkness spells on alt. Whm divine on ctrl.
Yeah i do use 3 different sets of macros but I use a ps2 controller. I can easily switch between sets and get ready to select my next spell before the casting animation of the spell I casted before is finished with the exeption of DIA (To fast ^^).

I reorder my magic list manually after auto sort so I actually use it alot to.. This is why I don't have a DS + Curaga macro... If everyone is dieing I usually got no mp anyway.. so then its a Benediction.
Anything works really.. alot of whm have thier own style. Either way it doesn't matter much as long as you can heal fast enough.
Because I play with the keyboard, my layout is a bit different.
Ctrl
1 - Cure II <p0>
2 - Cure II <p1>
3 - Cure II <p2>
4 - Cure II <p3>
5 - Cure II <p4>
6 - Cure II <p5>
7 - Divine Seal
8 - Blank
9 - Blank
0 - Benediction
Alt
1 - Cure III <p0>
2 - Cure III <p1>
3 - Cure III <p2>
4 - Cure III <p3>
5 - Cure III <p4>
6 - Cure III <p5>
7 - Regen <t>
8 - Cure <t>
9 - Fish
0 - Group Buffs
Alt 1-6 only get rarely used. It is set up that way so I can quickly shoot off an emrgency heal at a party member without having to target with F1-6 first. Another reason is that alt+tab would mean dead party
The majority of my time is spent on Alt 7 and 8. With the cure IIs backing me up if I fall behind.
Sure it takes up a lot of real estate, but thats what Im comfortable with.
Control - 1- Cure II (stpc)
2 - Cure III (stpc)
3 - Regen (stpc)
4 - Paralyze (t)
5 - Banish II (t)
6 - Slow (t)
7 - Dia II(t)
8 - Haste (stpc)
9 - Traditional gather up for protectra II and shellra II macro

Alt - 1 - /ta <bt> - Extremely useful.
2 - /follow <t> I'm lazy
3 - MP report
4 - Silence (t)
5 - The dance macro
6 - I forget this one right now... don't use it much :/
7 - Forget this one too... Sorry
8 - "Help! Hurry and Provoke!
9 - /point <t> - for selecting an enemy quickly
0 - Divine Seal
This set up works fine for me. With spells on my control list, I can get to them easily and without fumbling around too much and having to look. Alt macros have more text-based stuff, such as reports.
I've seen this (stpc) and other "smart" targetting commands around, but the only info I have seen from them so far is from a Japanese player whom, unfortunately, didn't quite explain clearly what they mean.
I know (bt) targets your partys first target, and I use it alot for debuffs, but what does stpc do? and lastpc etc? Anyone care to give a good oversight over what's available, please?

Unfortunately they do. I know of a whm that has a macro that says something like "Hey I'm dying here! {Provoke}!" and he/she is lvl 75 too.....and lets not forget the ever popular "{Refresh} {please}!" macro that still is floating around out there.

...I'm shitting dicks out of my eyeballs in excitement for the next bestgreating game of all time ever.
I copy paste a lot from macro set 3, which is where I store all my situational macros.
Ctrl:
1 - Utility/pull enemy attack macro (usually flash, sometimes banish for undead)
2 - Situational debuff - Currently set to Dispel, sometimes Silence or Sleepga (yes, on whm)
3 - Enfeebling macro - Slow, Para.
4 - Regen 3
5 - Cure 2
6 - Cure 3
7 - Cure 5 (note: No cure 4 - that's a manual cast spell only)
8 - Target/assist macro, /ta (person) or (bt) if I'm bored
9 - sCall target macro "blablabla found it"
10 - Protectra+grin+Shellra
Alt:
1- Na flavour of the week - Occupied by Cursna atm
2- Curaga
3- Haste
4,5,6- Parana, Stona, Silena in that order. Never removed
7- Erase
8- Barelement flavour of the week
9- Barstatus flavour of the week
10- Dark staff macro
First I will say that I use <t> in all my macro's, I used to use <st> for a long time and slowly realized (basically stopped being stubborn) that <t> is much quicker for status removal reaction time, and <p0>...<p5> lets be honest just takes up way too many macro slots.
HNM - Macro Set
[CTRL]
1 - Cure II
2 - Cure III
3 - Cure IV
4 - Cure V
5 -
6 - Curaga
7 - Curaga II
8 - Curaga III
9 - Curaga IV
0 - Divine Seal
NOTE: To mention otherwise also, I have changed my in-game macros to the following: Inventory (Z), Equipment (X), Check (C), Weapon Skills (V), Pet Commands (B), Job Abilities (N), and Magic (M). So hitting CTRL/ALT and those will use the ingame macros, then aside from return tell, tell, & linkshell I have all the other ones turned off. For Chat Filter(s) I basically filter all Attacks, Misses, & Evades from ALL, and then Damage Taken on all of them except Party.
Of course I do have *other* macros also... but um... yea... these are the important ones ^^
I don't like macros and don't use them unless an equipment change is required. For WHM I have one row only:
Ctrl
1. MP announcement (usually only used when tandem curing with another WHM or in Dynamis)
2. Erase (just in case I'm /BLM and can't get to it quickly through the list, also useful for /Recast)
3. Bar- (usually Barfira)
3. Flash (silly macro I made for amusement during a boring Dynamis run)
4. blank
5. Swap legs (Cleric's Pantaloons for Bar- spells, Blessed Trousers for all else)
6. Max MND/-enmity gear
7. Max MP gear
8. TA (/ta <bt>, used in xp/quest/mission/HNM fights, since I'm a list mage I always main target the mob)
9. Stand up
0. Rest
Ok I take that back, I have one row and one more, I have a R3 macro on the Alt line because I HATE when WHMs don't announce who they're raising and I waste time/MP.

CTRL Set #2:
Same as Set #1 but with Cure II replacing the Cures ^^
My ALT Set #1 simply contains all my buffs, and my ALT Set #2 contains my debuffs and BLM elemental spells. But then again, I'll be needing to switch around a few macros as I gain levels, I'm currently only a lvl. 18 WHM I'm busy leveling my BLM for subbing purposes.
