  • Icemage- Question about PS2 controller

quote from another thread-- "I use a PSX->USB adapter so I can use my Dual Shock 2 controller to play)"

I was thinking about trying this out but thought I would ask first just how good it is? I mean, do you use one since you find it easier to play with, or just because you find it more comfortable to sit back with a psx controller in your hands ... I have some doubts about how easily you can select all your macros in game when using a psx controller. (granted, I dont own a ps2 so maybe this is just me not being as familiar with them).

As a whm I know I have quite a few macros, and im planning on going bard at some point so I'll have even more (from what I hear). Anyways, I know this post probably doesnt belong in this forum but I wasnt sure where else to put it!

also, where can I pick up a psx controller & usb adapter? EB?

    Thanks

Umm..i'm not icemage, but he personally recommended that i pick this thing up.
Its actually pretty easy once you get the hang of it...its a $10 thing from radioshack.
The rumble feature, when enabled, causes the game to crash on a lot of people's systems, such as mine, but i just disabled it and no worries.
Personally, i haven't used it as a WHM yet, but i think accessing macros shouldn't be too tough once you figure it out.
IIRC, ice doesn't use macros (ya, he's that hardcore), but i do, and i think the controller would work fine.
You just hit a shoulder button to bring up a macro menu, and then hit the confirm button when on the correct macro to cast it.
This works well b/c this always opens up on the last one you used, so, when in a party, you'll generally be healing the same 1 or 2 tanks the whole time, and thus it will be very easy to access them in time.
    Just my opinion.

I'm not Icemage either but you should defenitelly get it, I don't like to use it while playing WHM in a party (too easy to make mistakes) but the second I do anything else whatsoever I use mt psx controller.

Yes, I do use macros, but not to heal I use macros for offensive stuff like Enfeebles, reporting HP/MP, as well as targetting enemies.

When I'm playing BLM I do use macros, though - it's important to get the right spell when Magic Bursting, and I never have to worry about hitting the wrong target there, so I use macros for that.

As a WHM, though, I got used to navigating the menu while playing beta, and I find it gives me a lot more flexibility to change spellcasting behavior on the fly when battle conditions change.

The main reason to use the controller is mobility. There is a night and day difference between moving using direction arrows on a keyboard, vs. just using two thumbs to control movement and camera. The visibility and precision of control just can not be overstated.

You can pick up the PSX->USB adapter for about $10US at pretty much any Radio Shack (and if they don't have it in stock, they can order it). There's one available online as well, but it's $15US + shipping.

Actually, if you don't use macros then the a ps2 controller works just fine, tried it for a few hours and it worked very well. If you use macros it's a freaking pain in the ass, takes "forever" for the freaking macro bar to show.

I find just the opposite to be true for me. The Macro bar comes up quicker using the controller than via the keybaord.

But you don't need to wait for the macro bar with the keyboard, it performs the action immediatelly.
