  • Switch to other jobs to help out in the long run?

Hi, level 10 White Mage from Windhurst here. I was wondering if I should siwtch a job (not permanent) to one of the other basic jobs and level them for a bit. Will the effects be prominent when I come back to White Mage? Or should I just stick to Whm. Also, if it is a good idea to switch, which jobs should I go for?

If you are under the impression that stats carry over from job to job, you are misinformed.

However, leveling other jobs is very useful, for several reasons:

    1. Its called having a subjob. When you tack on one of these you will have a noticable difference in stats. The best I can think of for a WHM would be other caster classes like SMN and BLM which will both boost your MP and casting potential.

    2. To experiment. There are alot of people out there who say they are going a specific Job/Sub all the way to the end. While this is fine and dandy, there is no law saying you have to do that.
Who knows you might find some other class you enjoy alot more.

    3. Learning about party dynamics. This is sorta like the adage of walking a mile in someone else's shoes. It won't allow you to be a know-it-all and boss other people around by telling them how to do their job, what it will do is allow you to react better with the jobs you more fully understand.

      Yeah, what he said.

If bored I guess you could level up blackmage some, since you'll probably sub it at 18. As he said, leveling up a job doesn't do you any good when you switch back to white mage, nor does having a job leveled which is not your main/sub job. Its only doing you good if it is currently your main/sub job.

Otherwise, the other jobs are just to switch to sometimes.

      For example:

I'm limited in time so sticking to white mage full time until I get the ability to have sub jobs, then subbing black mage for its benefits. At 30 I plan to get summoner, then sub summoner under white mage for its benefits (more mp, etc ) I'll likely get bored at some point and switch to summoner/white mage to solo some as well. The levels I had blackmage won't do me any good, when I am whitemage/summoner or summoner/whitemage. They will just do me good as the subjob before I'm 30 and get summoner.

Stats may not come with you when you change jobs but skills do.

Skills that are available to a whm will stay with you no matter what job you are when you raise them. For example if your evasion, shield and club (or weapon of choice) skills were lacking you could play as a warrior using a club and shield and retain those skills when you switch back to whm (up to a cap for your current job and level).
