The only thing that seems to affect how often Healing skill increases is the level of the target for the healing spell. The lower the level, the less likely you will get a skill gain, and the smaller that gain will tend to be.

I have never noticed my healing skill going up when I have whm subbed. My main is a blm. Do I have to have whm as my main to see increase?Comment

You can only get skill gains in skills that your main job can normally raise. To raise skills that you are receiving only from a subjob, you must switch to that job and raise the skill that way. Since Black Mages do not normally have Healing skill, you will not get any Healing skill gains while you have /WHM subbed.
