How much does the enhancing magic skill help?

I know it doesn't add to the value of protect, but does it do something else like make protect last longer? I don't seem to notice a difference in duration when Nylia casts protect on me or when I cast protect on myself, but I haven't put a timer on it yet.

The reason I ask this is because Paladins only get 2 enhancing spells, Protect and Shell. So if the enhancing skill doesn't matter I'm not going to knock myself out trying to build the skill and just let it go up naturally.

Neither Protect nor Shell are dependent on Enhancing skill in any way. As far as I know, Paladins can safely ignore this skill in its entirety.

1). So why does casting Protect/Protectra raise enhancement?

2). Is there some reason why, as a white mage, I want to raise enhancement?

NOTE: The Search function is a wonderful thing. The topic of enhancement skill has been discussed multiple times in several threads on the front page.

Basically, there are some spells which are affected by your skill. Bar<whatever> spells, Stoneskin, Invisible, Sneak, Deodorize, et. al.

As for why Protect and Shell give you enhancement skill - they are enhancement spells. They just aren't affected by the skill. *shrugs*

Just as a sidenote, notice how a Protect cast on a really low lvl person only lasts for around 1-2 minutes, whereas, on myself it's more in the area of 20 mins? (Not sure on that, I've never timed it or anything).

And I'm glad they do, since macro-casting protect is probably the quickest way to raise enhancement.

Also, searching is sometimes easier said than done. Is there a consolodated place that lists what spells are affected by what skills?

The higher your skill the longer regen lasts.

Umm... as far as I can tell, Regen is on a fixed timer, regardless of your skill level. It lasts for roughly 70 seconds, and heals 120-125HP consistently in my experience.

Well I know that when I first got the spell regen it would heal for less then 100 and my skill was around 30 something. Now my skill is 60 and its healing for around 120. I have also talked with another Whm and he says that regen tops out at about 150.

150? What level was the WHM?

I'll find out tonight and post it in the morning.

Lots of enhancement spells like Regen, Refresh, Protect, Shell, and Haste depends on the level of the receiver of the spell. Casting those spells on a level 1 person will only last a few seconds, as opposed to casting it on a higher level person, in which case it lasts much longer. There isn't really a correlation between enhancing skill and the strength/duration of those particular spells, although there are other spells that are affected by it such as the elemental defense spells (Bar-) and the Red Mage's Enchantment spells (En-).

I'm not even sure some spells which are supposed to be affected by Enhancing skill get any effect at all... Barparalyze/silence/blind/virus/petrify never seem to work very well no matter how much I raise my enhancing skill. You know its not a good sign when you cast Barblindra and the Wight uses Black Cloud and only fails to blind one person in the party. ;P

Incidentally, Maxim, did they change the damage formula for En<element> spells since July? From what I can tell now, all of the En<element> spells hit for roughly 1 damage for each 10 levels of Enhancing, before figuring enemy resistances into account. As far as I know, En<element> spells are not affected by weather or day of week (unlike other offensive elemental magic). Does that sound right?

Enhancing definately increases duration on everything, including protect and shell. Most dramatically my regen and en- spells specifically went from practically 10 second durations to multiple minutes when I leveled enhancing from 12 to 60+
