  • quick question on tunic armor

    greetings

Im so ready to upgrade my armor, but there's a note on the tunic saying "no headgear allowed" does this mean no head items period? aka no hairpins, helmets etc? or just no "head gear" which is a specific type of head armor. thanks for the info

Yeah your right when u have it equiped u can't have any headgear so as long as u have it equiped the head gear spot will always be blank.

I bought a tunic last night with a def rating of 9 which was much higher than my def1 headpiece and def 2 robe. Plus I like the hooded look it gives. Raised my total def from 30 to 36, not bad for 3k gil I think.

I held out and wore a robe (3def) until level 11.
You can buy a doublet from the armor shop that is 10def (level 11 required) but you can wear head items still. The doublet was just under 3k if i remember.

The hooded look is nice but not worth giving up a head slot unless the tunic had some stats imo.

I already had 2 pieces of head gear from the auction house that I just couldnt see giving up.

Wow... Doublet for 3k? I got mine for 1k... Of course I'm in Windurst though.

Anyway, the tunic was very useful for me since the 8-10 levels seemed to be the hardest ones so far, since I had some trouble getting good exp in parties. But now I've bought my doublet, and that allows for 5 more defense and 4 more evasion than the tunic . Although the tunic looked better in my opnion...

Make sure to get that compound eye circlet by the way... The hunt for a meteorite in that quest was definitely worth it O_O.

I'd hold out for the Doublet. Much better defense as a set and just as cheap depending on the area. A Doublet set costed me 3k on my server and that's a whole lot of defense. WHMs need defense to survive attacks and Doublets are the only way to go unless you have MP raising gear and on occasion MND raising gear.

I'll second Lyonesse's recommendation. Get doublet, brais, and gloves at level 11. Shoes too, can't remember what they're called. However, if you can afford Zealot's Mitts and Light Soleas (level 13), then you'll be even better off. Those are both NM drops, but they didn't cost too much (at least on Phoenix). The Compound Eye Circlet is a fantastic item for mages... that alone made me skip the tunic, both in beta and retail.

Actually, there was one other reason to get the tunic that I forgot to mention... Odds are, you'll want a Black mage sub. In my opinion, it's easier just to go ahead and get the tunic as a WHM and be able to use it for 3 levels, and then when you're BLM I believe you'll be using it for a bit longer(BLMs can't wear Doublets for some reason). Just my 2 gil though...

I prefer the tunic myself. I think it looks better and it also uses less inventory space - but you're right, you can get better defense if you equip separate head and body armour... I guess mages spend their life toing and froing between hoodies and the two separate armours depending on the levels.
