  • White mage scrolls

Hey, i've been playing the game for about 3 days and i'm lvl 3. I'm trying my hardest to finish quest after quest to get some gil (i have around 400 at the moment) and It's time for me to start getting some more spells. My question is: Are the white mage scrolls only sold at the auction counter's or do some drop off monsters in certain areas?
Currently, i'm hunting in S. & N. Gustaberg (sp) and the mines off of Bastok. If they are only sold in the auction house, do i just post a bid and hope i win it? How does it work?

    Thanks in advance.

Mind you when I played FFXI my hometown was Windurst so I may be wrong in this reply but I did visit Bastok several times and noticed there was in fact a spell shop there. Just ask a friendly neighbor nearby for directions. If they don't have the spell offered then yes, you will have to hit the AH. As for which enemies drop what I'm not aware of which monsters drop spells in that area but I know you will probably have to reach a higher level to solo those type of monsters.

If you decide to visit the Windurst area, Yagudo Scribes and Acolytes drop the spells.

      Re: White mage scrolls

The magic shop in bastok is located in bastok market. Its past the auction house, past metalworks, down the stairs, and across the street from the entrance to port bastok. As for hunting monsters for scrolls, the magic-using quadavs in gusta drop spells, But I;m not sure if they drop white mage ones. I know they drop blind and bind(Black magic), Sneak(lvl 20 whm/rdm spell, sells for 200 gil in normal shops), and possibly paralyze.

also, by "mines off of bastok" do you mean Zehrun mines or palborough mines?

I am from Windurst so this could vary from your location but over by me Yagudo Scribes and Acolytes drop all sorts of scrolls. Its a random thing but you could also find a few that you could sell for some cash at the AH.

The auction house doesn't work like an auction at all... it's weird. This is how it works:

You cannot see what sellers are charging for their items. You find an item you want, and "bid" on it. If your bid is higher than what someone is selling that item for, you get it for the price you bid. (If someone is charging 1 gil, and you bid 3,000 gil, you pay 3,000 gil for it.) If you bid too low, you simply don't get the item. You could bid 1 gil, then 2 gil, etc etc until you meet the lowest asking price, but that would take forever.

The only way to guess what sellers will be charging for their items is by clicking on the "Price History". That tells you what an item has been selling for. Sellers usually sell for the going amount.

When you see an item, there's a number in brackets near it. For example, if you see "Scroll of Dia [3]", that means that currently 3 people are trying to sell a Scroll of Dia. If you see [37] next to an item, you might want to start bidding low, because people are probably desperate to sell

Are the bar-spells good to get in your opinion? My money just got completely spent on a new set of armor and a new wand with INT and MND bonuses, so I don't really have that much to save on the other spells... So far I have every spell other than the bar spells I can get at my level though(they go for 1k each at our AH). So is it worth it getting barsleepra or barpoisonra, or even barstonera?

I am not sure how worth it the Bar spells are. I think at this early stage in the game they have little value...well other than the one that helps with earth. In windurst at least the Dirt Eaters and Yagudo caster love to cast stone on you which is earth I believe so that one would be worth it since most caster mobs you fight rely on stone for DD damage.

Beyond that if your not fighting anything in your area consistently that uses said element on you then I think the Bar spells would be next to worthless unless your one of those who has to have every spell you can use at the earliest possible you can use it.

You can get the bar- spells MUCH cheaper in Jeuno. As in, 200-600 gil apiece. So if you know someone who can travel to Jeuno for you, try to get them that way. (Jeuno is also where you can buy Shellra, by the way.)

If you don't have a Jeuno connection, economize and buy only some of them. Barpoison is quite nice for obvious reasons, and barstone is great if you'll be fighting worms. Barsleep is handy for mandragoras, saplings, and sheep.

That said, if you're short on cash, you could always skip them until you reach Jeuno yourself and still do fine.

Well, I actually went ahead and got barsleepra from the Auction House... I know I got ripped off for buying it at the usual price of 1k, but I've been leveling in the Canyon a bunch and sleep really gets me ><. Besides, it's the only major ailment that I can't cure yet. Anyway, I've noticed one very positive thing about it... It really helps to up my enhancing skill ! Not too bad against the sleep enemies either... Especially for those that aren't getting hit by attacks.
