  • life vs raise

Hi, so I've decided I'm gonna play a red mage by myself, but I'm also gonna play with friends, and I'm gonna use a different class for that. Most likely the white mage. So I had a few questions.

The biggest one is the difference between life and raise, or rather how life works. From what I understand, raise is a ressurect for other people, while life ressurects yourself. How does that work? Is it like a buff you cast on yourself before before the fight, or do you somehow cast it while dead? Also, is life like raise? As in, does life 1 give 25% exp, life 2 75% exp, and life 3 (does it exist?) gives ??? exp?

I'm gonna be reading up some more, if I can thank if more questions I'll ask them. Thanks for any answers you guys can give me.

Seeing how theres a life and life 2 i assume the second one has some sort of benefit over the first.....duh. Thing is life 2 is less mp cost than raise 2 which gives the 75% exp recovery...so I dont see how it can have as effective an effect. Bah.

All i know is if i cast a life spell and it returns less xp than the latest version of raise, id be wondering if i wanted to even bother casting it, or just take a raise from another nearby whm.

Life is just a messy translation of Raise... there is no such spell as Life in FFXI, its Raise. If you go to your homepoint then you lose 10% EXP from your next lvl... but if someone Raises you, you don't lose as much EXP. There is a WHM only spell called Reraise and you can use it at lvl 33 which will Raise yourself up after death. So its better to be Rasied then to go to your homepoint. Also the higher the version of Raise then the less EXP you lose (ex. Raise < Raise II < Raise III).

So how do you cast Reraise (the self only raise spell) when dead? I mean, you're dead, how can you cast a spell? Also, what if you're dead with not enough MP left to cast it? Or is it a sort of buff spell that revives you the next time you die?

I'm quite sure the "ressurect" spell is called life in FF. Or at least in the latest FF versions. (For example, I'm quite sure in FF7 it's called Life and Full-Life). So that also makes sense (why didn't they just keep with the tradition and call it life anyway then ).

          Anyway, thanks for the replies.

Stupid as it sounds, "Life" and "Life 2" are the way the spells have always been translated for the US versions of FF games (except FFT!). We got "Full-Life" instead of "Life 2" after FFVIII, and "Auto-Life" for "Reraise" after FFIX.

FFT has "Raise", "Raise 2", and "Reraise", despite the quality of the rest of the translation.
