  • another mage question

I want to be a pure healer for the most part, i don't care about attacks as much.

anyway, to start off with, would whm/rdm be the best way to go for me?

thanks for any help, i have really no clue besides what i read on this board (waiting for retail)

Well, for a 100% pure WHM, SMN would be the best subjob since that gives the most MP boost and if your WHM gets to 50, SMN at 25 has MP regen.

You asked about starting, so i assume that's for when you first get your subjob, but before getting summoner. Both BLM & RDM make decent subs for WHM. RDM at level 15 gets fast cast which would probably help for when you really need to cast spells, but BLM at level 15 gets Elemental Seal, which i've used a few times with Bind to give my party that head start we need to get away from a tough monster. It's really a toss up if all you want to do is enhance your WHM job.

However, about your wanting to be a "pure healer", i have a minor rant about that A WHM is not just a healer. You also need to build up your other skills. A WHM is also capable of enhancing your party members, enfeebling the monsters you are fighting, and is a capable fighter that can contribute to battle.

During battle, you should not only be curing your party, but preventing the enemy from harming them. Paralyze + Silence prevents your prey from hurting your party, hence negating the need to cure them too often. Enhancements like Haste + Regen allow your party to kill the monster off easier. Dia lets your party members hit the enemy easier, espically for those tough monsters. A RDM at the same level slightly better at doing all of these, but there *will* by times where a RDM is not available.

Finally, even though a WHM mainly uses spells, you should not forget your weapon. At level 100, you get the Starlight TP, which restore some MP whenever you use it. It helps a lot for those long battles, or, in my case, when hunting in easy areas for items I used it when i was key hunting so that i never had to actually rest, just cure, build up TP and regain my MP. If you're ontop of things, you can even join in on the skillchains that your melee members will perform (though, that's rare )

(sorry about the rant. A LS buddy asked me for help in his party on Monday, and there was a WHM there who did nothing but heal. The party was suffering significantly and wasn't getting anywhere near number of kills they should have been getting. The other WHM was only one level behind me, but had nothing *BUT* the heal skill built up, so he couldn't enfeeble the enemy, nor could he even hit the enemy with his club for any damage -.-)

thanks for the advice, i'll keep that in mind, in other mmorpg's i've always been an aggressive healer anyway, but i do not mind your rant, i'll definately keep it in mind here in about a month when i have the game in my hand.

and i definately want to be a whm/sum once i'm able to unlock that job

i'm just not sure if i want to main summoner or whm once i get to that point.

but i figure if i want to heal i would stick with whm as main, but someone told me, i'd have a hard time getting groups after lv 50 as a whm cuz some people think it's worthless

Well, the problem with Summoner is that you really do want to unlock the other summons in order to have the most fun. Carbuncle (and the elemental spirits) are fun, but very limiting. I'm planning on beating at least a few of the summons before i resume playing Summoner seriously. I don't know of anyone who's beaten the summons in beta at this time... You might want to play WHM as main until you are capable of beating the summons (probably level 50-60 )

As for WHMs being worthless after level 50, can't say i know for sure since i'm only 40, though I've had to turn down more party invites then I would like to over the last few days I have to admit though, the RDMs are shining a lot in the late 30's/early 40's since their enfeebles work better, yet they are able to cure just as well as WHMs are.

However, I think a WHM is essential for getting those expansion jobs Without Teleport, we'd be spending hours taking airships and riding chocobos instead of just a few mintues travelling around the world

That person was an idiot, all healer's are in high demand for all group's.(unless they have 1 or 2 already)
