What weapon should be used at low levels duoing with WHM?

My wife and I are duoing through here trying to get really started with FFXI.. Currently we are level 10 (almost 11), I am playing WAR and she is playing WHM.

My question is, other then Dia usually I'm the only damage happening on the mob at a time. And, usually we will fight Decent challenge stuff or below (but we take evens ocasionally and toughs rarely).

Right now I'm using 1h Axe and shield. Is the shield really helping that much? Should I switch to Greataxe for this duo team instead? It seems like any time I negate damage, it is just because they mob misses... and I guess since we are usually fighting ~ decent mobs, they will miss more? What do you all think?

Shield doesn't take away all damage. It randomly lowers the damage done to you.

I find using the greataxe, while it does do good damage and you'll want the WS' for later depending on what you wanna be, can be a bit iffy when in a party with a WHM of similar level, as it's hard to keep the hate on you due to the high delay that is inherent in axes.

if your douing you defiinitly want to do the axe/shield combo for the dmg reduction on the shield, plus you will get smash axe soon which is a stunning effect (sometimes) weaponskill which will be handy in stoping (again sometimes) goblin bombs. Now for pt where you will not be tanking you are probably going to want to do the great axe but that is up to you.
