I thought it was viable for PTs around level 30?

From what I hear SA+Sturmwind is the shit or have I just been misinformed?

I have to disagree with this statement. I think that unless you're tanking in promies, it's a superior sub to nin, the reason being is the delay on melee hits is just way too high until Dual Wield 2. A war/thf will probably out do damage done by a war/nin, simply because of the faster strike times with a single Great Axe. Not to mention SATA+Sturmwind...

War/Thf at lvl 30. Berserk and Sneak Attack. No Mighty Strikes.

              Imo, War/Thf kicks ass.

                Re: WAR/THF Your takes?

War/thf is a superior DD lv30+ SA+sturmwind throws out crazy numbers. At 30, my average SA sturm took off 70% of an IT mob's HP. At lv 40, it "only" takes about 50% off on average for me. The downside is after an SA sturm you'll pretty much be tanking until the mob dies, at least until higher lvs, so you have to time it right.

                  Re: WAR/THF Your takes?

I agree that War/thf is a great DD from 30 to 50, but Clyde's numbers are quite far off.

I went out to Altepa to kill a few monsters to find close to their max HP. I used axes instead of a great axe to insure I didn't overshoot the max HP by too much. Just for kicks, I started whackin' on a spider. Max HP error shows in what direction the Max HP is most likely (via the < or > symbols) and by how much. For this, the calculated Max HP is less than the actual since I stopped at 1% in counting damage.

                  Giant Spider:
Max HP: ~864 (probably closer to 865-870)
                  Max HP error: > 30
                  70% Max HP: 611.8
                  2/3 of 70%: 407.867

Now, let's say you were closing a skillchain because that's far more believable. You'd have to deal (on average) 407.867 damage PER SA + Sturm to reach your average of 70% HP done to the mob assuming the SC does half damage of your WS EVERY time. I know Spider's are not IT to level 30, but to pull 400 damage consistently would require the luckiest man alive to get a DA everytime at level 30 to get that kind of damage. Now onto a few beetles. Max HP error here is the damage on the killing blow.

                  Sand Beetle #1
Max HP:~1465-1470 (weird how they're both so close in the last few digits)
                  Max HP error: < 59
                  70% Max HP:1023.4
                  2/3 of 70%: 682.267
Note: An attack round of about 100 damage dropped the beetle ~7% HP (yes I used Windower)

                  Sand Beetle #2
                  Max HP:~1380
                  Max HP error: < 42
                  70% Max HP:972.3
                  2/3 of 70%:648.2
Note: Spinning Axe of 248 dropped the beetle ~18% HP

                  Sand Beetle #3
Max HP:~1320 (my total damage on this one came out to be 1337 lol)
                  Max HP error: < 71
                  70% Max HP:935.9
                  2/3 of 70%: 623.933

So, in Altepa, at level 30, to deal 70% damage to beetles would require on average, for your SA + Sturmwinds to deal 600+ damage AND the skillchain -has- to deal half the damage of the WS (so 300+). I'll believe it when the devil hands me a snow cone.

Now, let's say we kept the same mob max HP for your level 40 mobs just for discussion's sake.

                  Test Mob
                  Max HP:~1320
                  50% Max HP:660
                  2/3 of 50%: 440

Now, once again these numbers are hard to believe even if the mobs at level 40 had this kind of max HP. 440 average for SA + Sturmwind + 220 SC closer consistently? Remember now, an average constitutes both highs and lows. So you're saying you deal both more and less than 440, but enough of each to balance out to 440 average. Maybe I was doing something wrong at level 40 then, but most of my SA + Sturms were 300 tops. I would occasionally break 400 with a DA, but that proc rate is so low it is no where near reliable.

Please, don't post information so exaggerated it makes the idiots laugh. Be far more realistic next time, and no one may give a damn enough to actually spend 20 minutes doing what I just did lol. By the way, I took pictures just in case ;D

                    Re: WAR/THF Your takes?

Ehh, I didnt fight beetles at 30. I fought sahagins/fish by SSG entrance. Forgot what I fought immediately after that, but mid-late 30s did gobs by outpost in east altep, and did yoto gobs by IC zone after that. Gobs and sahagins are much softer than beetles, and also have less hp, or at least they seem to. The percentages were eyed from the HP bars of the mob, so maybe they arent 100% exact, but they are pretty close I believe.

I dont remember ever hitting as low as 400 at lv 40 though unless I missed one of the 2 hits of sturm. If a get some free time I can gear up my 42 war and see if the numbers I remember are correct or incorrect, however, this month i have finals for 21 units worth of courses, and as such am very busy :/

                    Edit:
Stats I had for WS macro iirc:
                    STR+11
                    DEX+9
                    acc+2
                    att+11
                    chief kabob: str+5 att+22%

30-36 Twicer gives very nice SA sturm damage: DMG50 Delay504 Enchantment: double attack
                    37-41 Horror Voulge is nice as well: DMG60 delay489 vit+1 attack+8

                      Re: WAR/THF Your takes?

WAR/THF is good to keep leveled, but it really shines before you get Rampage, and after you get Raging Rush.

WAR/NIN works for HNMs and Gods, but not nearly the same as WAR/THF, which has always done much better in my experience. (Speaking in third-person. I know enough Warriors to understand the general concensus.) Rampage is normally nulled out pretty hardcore on any type of God (Personal experience, here.) so I would imagine /THF would help you do a little more damage with your first strike, while also making it hit 100%.

I personally on my WAR used Great Axe all the way to 37. I was actually forced to WAR/MNK, but I was in a static, and I was the tank. >.>; On occasion after the static ended, I geared up and messed around for giggles. I dropped a few 400 damage Sturmwinds as WAR/THF, giggled, then went back to BST. But imo, your best sub for when you're not tanking is /THF.

                      ...because I hate WAR/NIN's before 50. >_>

Don't forget SA Shield/Armor Break. It'll guarantee that it lands, and nearly double its damage. SA Breaks can easily do 200 damage, and you can use them to close Fusion or Impaction.

as a mithra thf I did a 400 SATA combo to end a fusion in the jungles without a mnk sub

so going by that example you can see why war/thf pulling off 400+ SA Sturmwind is a thing of beauty, just make sure to switch back to eisen/kampf gear after you are done (you be hit)
