Only 10 days until I get FFXI, and I want to be the tank, so I was wondering... how do you learn the provoke technique? Actually, I'm not too farmilar with the way of learning things altogether in FFXI... thanks to anyone who answers

you gain Provoke automatically at level 5. after that, it's just a matter of selecting it from your abilities menu (or macro).

If you want to macro it, assign it to a marco (Ctrl+1, for example)
/ja "Provoke" <t>
/ja means it's activating a job ability. "Provoke" is the ability itself. <t> tells the macro that to use the ability on your current target. If you have no target you cannot provoke it. If you're targeting a person provoke can't go off either, so just make sure you've targeted the monster you plan on attacking.

Thing it looks like these two forgot to tell you is that Provoke is a Warrior job ability. Which means once you are lv. 5 as a Warrior you will get it. To have any other job use that ability then you must sub job Warrior to that job and you'll get to use it again once you reach lv. 10.

ã¾ã‚〜nontheless, I guess someone should give the poster a rundown on the provoke technicalities.
On a basic level provoke as much as you can.
But on an advance level, you learn that that can be a bad thing, as provoke is at its peak the instant it's use and slowly deterates. Such that, it's better to not always use it, but use it when you can hate spike. I.E. WS+provoke = big hate spike, as oppose to Provoke, wait 10 seconds, WS.
Take your time slowly, no one expect you to be a hate control master on your 10th day, but eventually there is more skill then provoking every 30 seconds...which is a bad thing actually, if you're pushing the limit of a good tank.Comment
