  • War/Thf at lower levels

Ok, I know people usually sub thief with warrior at level 30 when they can get sneak attack. However, I was wondering how the combo works pre level 30.

I know that War/Mnk is the usual combo that warriors take for tanking purposes. Although, I'm interested as to whether or not War/Thf has anything viable to bring to the table at those levels as a damage dealer or will I be "gimping" the party?

you don't bring anything to the table over /mnk < 30.

gimp? meh, i did WAR/thf until 20 in the dunes (switched out to /nin later). doesn't really matter much in the dunes imho.

    Thanks Yyg!

war/mnk til 24 at least, war/nin is viable after 24, because you get Utsusemi: Ichi, 30+ you can sub thf because you have Sneak Attack, which helps Sturmwind damage pretty well.

My whole premise behind going War/Thf is that, I have zero interest in playing as a monk; I have to level thief for farming later anyway, so why not just go ahead and get if over with if the combo is fine?

I did the same thing. I had /thf raised for farming and I needed to raise war as a sub for my drg. So ive been going war/thf. The eva bonus from /thf helps a bit when I tank and overall I dont have any problems with invites yet. My war is at lvl 25 so I dont have the ability to SA yet either.

You can main tank with /thf? Have you ever had any problems keeping hate, or taking hits from the mob?

With /MNK i have been able to control hate pretty well after the second provoke with the boost voke combo, i seen WAR/THFs fail at this before 30 and probably after 30 as well. I prefer MNK sub...i wouldnt invite the others unless i had to because to me a MNK sub pre 30 is just that much better if played right.

Oh Im not trying to suggest that /thf pre 30 is ideal, but it works. The mob will take swings @ other PT members more often too, most noticable BLMS. I have max eva and pary too at this level so I do pretty at staying alive when I do tank. Most situations however I have been invited to be a melee not a tank.

truthfully, MNK is very easy to level to 10 and you can always use it later for farming crystals. had I not gotten lazy after doing for my 3 other characters, I would've gone /mnk as well.

                  Thanks Yyg!

just go with war/thf. If you do your job really well, having thf sub won't be a big deal for a party. I just wouldn't main tank as one though. Have two tanks in the party, you and another. I really enjoy playing with a ninja, its really fun.

I don't want to lvl mnk to sub for war either, playing as mnk is not my cup of tea. I play alongside a monk, instead of being one. I think it is a waste to lvl a job only to sub for a job till 30, you won't use it anymore, so whats the point.

Thank you, that was exactly my feeling on the matter. I've decided just to go War/Thf like I intended. Thanks for the advice everyone!

                        Re: War/Thf at lower levels

By going War/thf pre 30, it'd be like going War/non sub. Nothing from Thf pre 30 helps War out in any way, not even the eva bonus. War/Mnk is the best solo tanking combo for War until 37, especially now after the new Utsu update. Counter will kick in a lot more then any eva bonus, not to mention More HP, more Vit, Dodge, Focus and the all mighty Boost.

I'm not saying you *have* to lvl it, I'm just saying /Mnk does have a much larger impact on both your tanking and DD abilities then Thf does pre 30.

                          Re: War/Thf at lower levels

Nothing beats a 3 strike with Double Attack and Counter all hitting for good hate. MNK is severely undermined by other people its ridiculous. They can be pretty good DD and tanks up til the 50ish level which by then a NIN sub would be a little more preferable with Dual Wield upgrade. WAR/THFs i would not chance it, they really cannot hold hate as well and i wouldnt like to invite a WAR/THF with high numer DD be it RNGs or BLMs x_x Alot of times a WAR/THF is no different(or has so little impact its better off saying nothing) than a subless WAR if you are being asked to tank or under 30. You will lose hate really quick even in Valkurm.

                            Re: War/Thf at lower levels

Hume War/Mnk I was safely tanking by myself by level 21. Always provoking, boosting. Meat or Fishkabobs worked.

The only competition for hate was with a rich galka monk who provoked. War can also counter mandies for over 100, and Sturmwinded for over 250.

Thf brings nothing before 30 other than Dex. Your stealing wont make a difference.

I haven't used /Nin because mandies would eat shadows, where as Mnk could counter and boost.

I myself believe /MNK offers more then /THF pre 30

                              As others have said before:
                              *Boost in between provokes
                              *Counter JT at 20
                              *Better stats

Counter comes especially useful against the mandys in the jungle, where they like to hit you so much but so little ^^ I personally think WAR/MNKs make better tanks in the jungle against mandys (goblins are another matter)
