How do you tank as a WAR/NIN pre-74?

[i]-Start casting Utsusemi, and time it so the mob will attack BEFORE your casting bar reaches 20%.

I find this can be rather difficult, for me anyway. I think you need to time it so that the mob hits at or very near 20%. 10% or even 15% is not enough sometimes, depending on the mob of course. My only other suggestion is that you have equipswap ready when shadows are down. I've heard stacking +VIT is more effective than +DEF, so I went with Verve rings. But, I don't know the correlation between the two or when diminishing returns kicks in and it becomes more advantageous to stack the other.

I guess it all comes down to preparation and timing once again for us WARs. Preparing defense mode/equipment and keeping all useful weapons skilled up for whatever the situation calls for. If it gets so bad though that you consider using a shield, then maybe it's the wrong situation for WAR/NIN altogether.

Other than that, I've read that /MNK tends to be better to tank. So you might want to go with that if that sub is sufficiently levelled. I haven't experimented with this though since, well, my account has been deactivated in favor of academics for the time being.

Ok unlike some of the other posters I am using my actual in-game name. I have a few things to say and yes this is also going to be way off topic from what the original post was about. To the drg I like that you are trying to help if you have also hgh lvl war as your job then the experience and knowledge is apreciated. If not guessing from what something would seem to make sense to you may actually not be correct and confuse the up and comming warriors. To the war that flamed the drg you could have said what I just did and not flip out. Also dont talk trash about their job as if it is inferior. Dragoon are actually not as weak as many think they can do some good damage just like the other melees. The problem they have (all from what I have seen from parties I am not a drg) is the lack of a good weapon skill. To the drg who challenge warrior to ballista. First off other people would get in the way but if you went out to an open area and faced of no one is gonna question the drg would win. It is common knowledge drg is a great soloer and with sub /mage you can get you wyvern to spam you with healing breath as you jump for added TP and swing away; Shadows would not last because your swings as well as your wyverns would take them away. On the other hand I dont wanna say no one cares but I dont worry about not being able to take another job 1 vs 1. I like to think about the party set-up since this is a party based game and how I can help the group as a whole. At the end of this post I was gonna add a little advise about how to tank better pre 74 as war but everyone else pretty much did a great job and covered it all since there isnt much to cover. Brd helps a lot time you recasts as perfect as you can and grab all the hate you can with enmity, damage, voke, warcry all the tools ya got.

I try my hardest to have a pld in my parties, but if i must tank i eat fish mithkabobs and use utsusemi whenever possible, hate normally isnt a problem because i still hit really hard.

Just had a PT 57~59
WAR (me, tanking) RNG, RNG, WHM, BRD, & BLM
roughly 6,000 per hour. Carnage Elegy was _amazing_ I could keep blink up at all times, and go all out DD and keep up with the RNG's. The PT wa so strong that we all killed Wyvernpoacher, and saved one RNG from alot of pain & suffering, the o-bow dropped XD

Is it possible for war/nin to tank at lvl 24?. with ichi enabled i would think even in quifim the dd/def would be sufficient enough to tank/dd at the same time. I really want to take war/nin atw ftw. just watching lvl 50+ in action caused me to bust a nut. atm im a war/thf , trying to level axe and ga. your opinion would help alot. if this isnt the right area to post this question. someone lead me in the right direction?
