Is WAR/PLD a decent class? Or is PLD/WAR so much better that there is no point to switching them around?

Don't sub PLD when you level your WAR sub, if you're making PLD main. There is no knowledge without experience.

It's pointless. PLD sub doesn't provide anything for WAR. A nearly non-existant MP pool, Undead Circle/Killer (yeah...like that'll help in a day-to-day basis,) and Shield Bash at 30 *rolls eyes* Oh, and the PLD and WAR Defense traits don't stack. WAR/MNK is so much better. Bigger HP, Boost every 15 seconds for hate (if you use it whenever it's available along with Provoke and a WAR's high damage, you can generate ridiculous ammounts of hate,) a minor increase to your STR and VIT, Counter (which is oh-so-nice with Double Attack and a Great Axe,) and at 30 Dodge, which helps you avoid hits. WAR/NIN gets Dual Weild (over-hyped if you ask me, but it becomes great at 50+, and noone said you HAD to dual weild when you're subbing NIN,) and Utsusemi to avoid some hits.
Quite simply, WAR/PLD is an inferior tanking combination.

The wierd thing is...why do strat guides say its a viable combination? People who havent played the game say some kinda bogus bs like that...man..=/

Eh, it sounds like it would work, really...A Warrior has good defense, a Paladin has good defense, normal reasoning would say they'd compliment each other. But PLD abilities don't really compliment the WAR job much, it only works backwards. Yeah, it's a shame the strategy guide says bogus info like that, there's already enough misguided newbies as it is.

war/pld is worse than war/whm up to 60 (neither adds anything of use, but whm has more MP). Then you would get physical defense up II (pld only lvl 30 job trait) and sentinel, but it still won't even come close to being a good sub :/Sputt - The lucky one.
Covington Approved.

WAR/PLD doesn't offer very much, especially in the lower levels.
Warriors best way to keep hate is through damage and really there isn't reall a better option than /MNK (some say until 50+ then you switch to /NIN but I still think a /MNK could hold hate way better than me) Counter Attack causes even more damage and saves you from geting hit, and you get boost which adds up to quite a bit of hate when used every 15 seconds.
You also get Dodge which from my experiance helps quite a bit (I dont seem to evade more, but I seem to Counter more) and you get Focus aswell. You can use Defender and still keep hate quite well because you will either have Focus or Aggressor going, so you will have great ACC while being in defensive mode.
As for DD.... yeah... the PLD job kinda expains why subbing it for DD wouldn't help, but I assumed you already realized that

war/pld is wat i did when i was lving my war sub
too lazy to get nin up.. war/pld XD so darn hard.. and it seems like war/nin is best combo after lv 24 which u can get utsusemi and dual wear.. as a 62war/nin now i seem to do more damage than some melees like sam.drg 74war/nin could tank/dd which make it more deadly .. compare to war/mnk which cannot tank anymore after 55 or so..
war/nin alllllllllllllllllllllllllll the way >:D

I haven't tried out WAR/PLD, although I think there are some attributes to the class that COULD make it viable under CERTAIN circumstances.
As someone previously mentioned, WAR/PLD would get shield bash at 30. At 60, they would get sentinel, and at 70, they would get cover. At 74, they could use flash. Granted, the MP pool would be very very very small, but sometimes keeping hate vs. losing it to a mage makes the difference between winning the battle or getting a total PT wipeout.
Strictly theoretically speaking, a WAR/PLD would have higher potential to pull an emergency "Oh my god I need to keep hate" out of their you-know-where than a WAR/NIN would have at high levels. Because the low-level NIN debuffs are basically ignored by high level monsters, having the ability to throw out a shield bash, a flash, or cover an overzealous magic bursting black mage would assist in holding hate. Sentinel could be useful for those nasty links that come up sometimes whether we all like it or not.
WAR/NIN and WAR/MNK can both be excellent tanks. However, WAR/NINs, although they don't take as much damage, have a bit rougher time keeping hate, and WAR/MNKs, while they can keep hate more easily, take a lot more damage. Yes, I've held hate many times as a WAR/NIN tank in the upper 50's, but it's not as easy as it is with MNK SJ.
Again, I'm not speaking from personal experience, just offering a devil's advocate point of view. I AM actually raising a PLD in case I should ever run across a circumstance where it would seem to make sense to use it. I certainly don't plan to use it as my primary subjob, but I love to have options. To me, that's what makes WAR such a great class: Sheer versatility.召75|吟75|黒75|赤75|戦72|白60|獣40|忍37| 暗37|シ37|ナ32|侍30|モ30|竜21|青14||か8| 狩7|コ7
