  • Scythe Armed Warriors

Hey. I know that the scythe is far from the best weapon for warriors, but can I get to level 20 useing it, without hurting my party to much? Can I get to 30?

Just asking cause I started warrior job to help my whm earn some money. I picked a scythe cause it seemed fun, was a nice change of pace from my whm, and doesn't really do that much less damage than a great axe.

Now I feel like takeing the warrior through valkurm to lv 20ish. Anyhow, i'm just wondering how far I can go with a scythe without being laughed off the scene.

    30.

It'd be more beneficial if you ever planned on leveling WAR again to use Axe or Great Axe, though.

I used scythe/spear, depending on the ws needed for the party at the time. I rarely played war, since I was getting ready for DRG, so yeah.

Unless war is your main job, you could use scythe

        go ahead

take it to 75 if you want. I always consider any weapon not A+, A, or A-(some conditions B+) a GIMP.

You'll miss more, and deal less damage, sure on solo levels there isnt much of a difference, but hey if you want to suck at war go ahead.

The thing that pises me off is you dont see a mnk use staff in exp pts, or a drk use axe or sword, or a blm use h2h just because they can.(btw blms can use rune knuckles)

you never know you might level war again past 20 or 30 and you'll curse yourself for not leveling it at first and spend 3-4+ hours getting it up. Sure you can slide by even to 30 i've seen wars use scale and a level 12 polearm up till 29, gimp? very. do I care about other wars - no.

Let me just tell you gimping yourself as a war hurts EVERY war because people tend to be steriotypical. at least after 40 people know war is one of the best melee because of its versetality and ability to even surpass other melee(yes the uber 1337 DRK OMG LOLZ)

It's gimp. Not just because of the accuracy and attack difference, but because Scythe WS suck, while Great Axe WS are pretty useful. Your first Scythe WS is Slice, standard Scission physical attack WS. After that comes Dark Harvest (crappy dark-based magic damage) and Shadow of Death (somewhat decent dark-based magic damage.) First GA WS is Shield Break, which lowers enemy Evasion a LOT, the second is Iron Tempest, the usual physical damage Scission WS, and the third WS (Lv23 for WAR if I remember correctly) is Sturmwind, god of all WS up until Viper Bite. Also, at 20 you can use Neckchopper which is by far the most devastating close-range weapon at that level (39 damage, Accuracy +5) and at 25 you can use Plantbane on those Kazham mandies. No matter how you slice it (no pun intended) the Great Axe is superior. Oh, and 1-3 difference in damage between weapons does make a difference.

Can you get away with using a Scythe up to 30-40? Yes. Would you be much stronger with the Great Axe? Yes. Also, let me remind you that as a Warrior you rely on damage for hate...Provoke and Boost won't do if you don't put out big enough numbers. A WAR/MNK with a Great Axe using Meat Mithkabobs can easily outdamage DRKs from level 20-30 without even using Berserk. Myself, I encourage WARs to have more than one weapon. It makes us more versatile and gives us more skillchain options. However, if you can avoid using anything that isn't a Great Axe, then do so. I've only levelled WAR up to 30, but from 20-30 I was generating so much hate I'd die because people couldn't pull the mob off of me with Provoke when I was in the red.

Sorry if I sounded harsh but there really is no way around it...the proper weapon for a Warrior is a Great Axe (double axes are better in certain situations, too.)

Many of you WAR may know me. I took WAR to 45 being a WAR/NIN with a Great Axe and Dual Wielding 1 Hand Axes, long story short I got bored and switched to PLD which I am now enjoying at 51^^. That aside I regretted using a Polearm to lvl 30 (thinking I was gonna be a DRG--bad idea) thus I had to skill up G.Axe and 1H Axes all the way to 100+ at lvl 30 and then the rest of the way in PTs, that's no fun at all. So for these and the aforementioned reasons of my fellow WARs I STRONGLY recommend you use a G.Axe and a 1H Axe, whenever 1 caps, switch, they are both VERY strong weapons. Dunno about using a shield when tanking though if WAR/MNK (not WAR/NIN), as a PLD I've found a shield to be a life saver and invaluable, especially when casting and in near death...not being able to shield block when tanking could really suck...hmm....

Carrying a two-handed weapon raises your parrying faster, though. And I imagine dual weilding isn't much different. While levelling in Yhoator my Parrying skill was ~70 while my shield was ~40, meanwhile a sword-shield (ugh) Warrior I met had 50/50 with both skills. Shields are nice, but the damage isn't quite as nice. WAR is a job that is meant to be played offensively (to an extenct) even when tanking; without good damage, Provoke alone isn't enough to keep hate. Let's not forget that WAR/MNK has Counter, and WAR/NIN has Utsusemi, so both have other means of neglecting damage. Use Great Axes and dual Axes. If you're taking too much damage, eat Fish Mithkabobs instead of Meat Mithkabob. Just try to keep your damage as high as possible while still be able to tank efficiently.

Do you guys naturally change every Renkei there is to lvl both weapons up? I mean when renkeing with a SAM doing Distortion..i hesitate to lvl my Axe since its such a good renkei. Do you guys always switch just to lvl? Or keep it underlvled temporarily so the renkei stays?

BTW Shield is not that bad paired with an Axe, its kinda cool to see yoru Shield skill rise and seeing screwdriver miss when your tanking. It saved so much mp that way

And Army i know about that voke thing, it happened to me too XD Was funny stuff...this WAR had to keep voking every 30 seconds to keep up hate with me(and he didnt turn the mob still) so i wont die again XD

I don't break a perfectly good and damaging skillchain just to skill up other weapons, I'd rather do max damage and join a skill-up party later if I have to.

As for the shield, I guess I just like doing big numbers. If you can generate enough hate and you want to use it, by all means, do so. I wouldn't give up Sturmwind and Shield Break for the world though

It's fun watching people actually have to sweat to out-hate you. Makes you warm and fuzzy inside ( '-')b

If the skillchain is working then I dont change it.

Tonight I went from 43 > 45 (:O Aggressor) with a WAR friend of mine. I was WAR/THF he was WAR/NIN and we were doing Raging Axe -> Sturmwind on beetles for 120ish Raging, 300-600 Sturm (it was soooo awesome getting that high) and 200 scission.

                      It worked really well, but my friends GAxe is behind about 10 levels, so we didnt switch off. Now I'm 6 points behind in my Axe ; ;

Use axe/greataxe, trust me. I leveled my elvaan war using a polearm because I wanted to go drg. I learned that was pointless, though, because when leveling any melee (like drg or drk) that focuses on 1 or 2 weapons, capping them at each level is easy. Right now I'm leveling my taru war/mnk using axe/shield when I tank and great-axe for DD. It is SO much better this way, despite the fact I'm taru and not elvaan. I routinely pull the hate off DRKs and other WARs just by boosting and attacking, and most importantly -- STURMWIND ROCKS! On my server there are always tons of wars seeking. Using the "right" weapons WILL get you more invites.
