  • War/Nin at 30

I have read many of the posts here and on the Nin boards. I am still confused.

Background: I am a Paladin. Straight out. I need to level my war from 30-37 to take Pali all the way. I recently leveled Nin to 16 and I am having fun with it. I will take it to 18 tonight then switch to war/nin to level to 37. (plus I want to take war/nin into promathia)

So weapon choices: I have read that swords do not do as much as dual axes but at 30 the nearest axe is Tigerhunter D22 D276. Should I dual wield those then upgrade to warriors axe? OR Dual wield Centurians sword and gain the nice accuracy +6 / attk +8? (I am Elvaan +acc would be nice) I'm at a loss and although I am not poor I don't want to lose gil/waste my time on sub par equip.

    Thanks for the help

At 30 the WAR skillcap for axe is 93. and for sword it's 89. So basically all a Centurion Sword's bonuses do is put it back even with what an axe has already inherently. I'd use one of each and flipflop them back and forth depending on whether you need axe or sword skills for renkei.

The sword's stat bonuses definately outweigh the small difference in capped level. I'd go with the swords until you feel they're inadequate. Maybe even go Axe/Sword with the Warrior's Axe.

Isn't a weapon skill level = 1 acc + 1 atk? 4 levels would be 4 acc and 4 atk. Anyway, would the acc and atk apply to the axe cuz theyre being duel weiled, or just the sword?

          Hola Glucian.

I dont really have much to say that hasnt been said, but at that lvl the difference in skill cap is neglegible, and the bonus on the sword you plan on using will make up for the difference.

I personally didnt use /nin until after 40. Before that it was /mnk with GAXE for DD and axe/shield for tanking. I dont know what kind of role you are trying to do for lvling and or promathia, but imo /mnk is superior to /nin for tanking at the lvl your WAR is at.

          Happy Hunting.

            Hola ^^

Basicly, I didn't want to level monk main to 18. I really liked the idea of dual wielding for skillups later on. I finished Nin to 19 tonight and now will go buy equip for War/Nin. I already have Tigerhunter so I am going to get Centurians sword to use till 31. Then I will swap tigerhunter for War Pick+1 (Anyone else missing rusty fishing?)

As far as Promathia, all the suggested lineups I have seen have had war/nins in lieu of paladins for extra damage against the boss.

I hope all in all I haven't handicapped myself by choosing war/nin. Again I really only need it for 7 levels. Once war is 37 then I'm all Pali.

Next project is WHM or RDM to 25 for sneak and invisi......

I didn't mean to try and convey that you had made a wrong choice or had handicaped yourself in any way. Have no doubt, WAR/NIN is badass. You'll be plesantly suprised with your damage and if you have a thf helping or get your 3+3 Utsu in the begenning of the fight (s) then there should be no problem tanking.

As Uroboros said, the Centurion's Swords stat don't really add anything to you if you dual weild them, they just make them on-par Attack (note: NOT damage) and Accuracy-wise with axes due to the difference in skill. Swords are just plain weak in comparison to axes, with the exception of the knight swords like Hunting Sword, but those are rarer. Either way, you'll want to have at least one axe with you at all times, and in your other hand you can swing either a sword or another axe. Oh, and I don't want to discourage you from dual weilding or anything, but DW I is basically just the sum of the delays, so in terms of raw damage you'd probably do more with a Great Axe. Another thing that you might want to keep in mind is that Viper Bite is the most damaging skillchain ender right now, so taking a Great Sword to open Distortion (Power Slash > SATA Viper Bite) would also come in handy if there isn't anyone else in your party that can use GS/Polearm/GK/Archery/Marksmanship WS. I'd take all 4 weapons, and use the Great Axe (I don't think Raging Axe comes close to Sturmwind even with the 3rd hit you'll score with your second weapon) except when the skillchain calls for something else. You CAN still dual weild, your damage won't really suffer big time, but as I see it the Great Axe is still a better option...unless you could get a Sarashi. That'd be different then ^^

And yes, due to the lack of Boost, a THF would be favorable to help pin hate on you early on with SATA, in addition to being able to close distortion with Viper Bite.
