i know warriors are a tank class but how the hell do they keep hate? the only hate keepin tool they have is provoke, its good at first put i noticed 25+ it only keeps the mob on you for 10-15 seconds so its attacking mages for 20 seconds, its dosnt matter anymore since im a pld now but im really curious on how higher level warriors keep hate

Well, I prefer to party with a THF to have them trick the hate onto me. As long as I have that and it's being done properly, I can hold hate pretty well with my damage. I try to balance between ATK and DEF when tanking, and I always use Agressor.

/MNK gives you Boost, Dodge, and Focus to help with hate, and Counter to avoid attacks/gain hate.

/NIN lets you avoid the first six hits and maybe more. This should give you a nice headstart.

You have Warcry but that is more of an emergency thing because of the long cool-down.

And our AF has the most Enmity bonuses on it. That's got to help.

WAR isn't an ideal tank class. I prefer to deal damage, since we are top-tier in that area. As a WAR tank, you will learn to hate over-nuking BLMs with poor AM burst timing, bad thieves who trick onto the DDs, and people who don't understand the difference between NIN/WAR and WAR/NIN

I found keeping hate extremely easy 1-30 on my Warrior. Used greataxe fulltime, may have helped.

At lower levels, spamming boost from MNK sub gives a ton of extra hate. The problem I usually have it getting hit too much. With defender, my attack sucks and without it I tent to take too much dmg. That leads to the WHM grabbing hate and causing chaos. Stuck at 47 now till I get DRG to 60 and can catch up with money for good gear. The 50's look promising to me with the + enmenity (SP?). Axe with a shield helps too if you can block some attacks. It helps to have both axes leveled up.

                Just provoke?

War/Nin can kick ass and tank at the same time. Dealing damage is how I keep hate and I use Utsusemi and Phalanx rings to enhance my tankability.

                The only time I lose hate is when the Drk goes all out with Souleater, the black mage casts too much ancient magic, or the antican uses sandtrap ; ;

Other then I can hold it very well.

NOT a bash on Dark Knights

Just imagine if your Dark Knight provoked every 30 seconds. That's how Warriors keep the hate.

Before 55 sub /MNK and Voke, Boost, Boost, Voke, Boost, Boost. I think gaxe is better here, because then you get fun stuff like Counter with gaxe and rotating Focus/Aggressor which helps gaxe a huge amount. Also, lets you sometimes do stuff like spam Shield Break while other melees renkei. After 55 sub /NIN, swap to axes, and spam Rampage. The hate control tools you lose in not having Counter and Boost are made up for by the damage of Rampage, which basically becomes your megaprovoke if you're the tank. I agree with previous posters, save Warcry for emergencies.

It can be kind of spotty regardless from about 40ish to 54ish, at 54 you can get Chrysoberyl Rings for more VIT and you have two pieces of AF then for +4 enmity and then at 55 you get Rampage and it's pretty simple from then on. WAR tanking is interesting because it's totally different from PLD or NIN tanking. You take far more damage than either of them but you also deal way, way more damage too, so mages spent by far the most MP on a WAR tank but by the same token the mobs go down faster. Still wish I knew why WAR had crappy base VIT. >.>

spam boost, and voke, use dodge as much as you can aswell, WARs have much more hate keeping abilities than just provoke.
I constantly steal hate from plds if Im DD, maybe they just are bad plds, but I love it

Uroboros, Lmnop, and GSDragoon pretty much sum it up. Put simply, Warriors hold hate through damage. These are the best ways to hold hate as a WAR tank in my opinion (keep in mind that I've only gone up to level 30, part of this comes from hearsay and general cons:

                            Levels 1-10:
WAR/WHM - You'll be soloing, who cares about hate?

                            Levels 10-20:
WAR/MNK - Great Axes are your friend. Use Boost in Conjunction with Provoke religiously whenever possible and you shouldn't have hate issues. Boost during downtime as well, 'cuz if Altana loves you you won't miss that first hit and you'll do some fairly good damage. Use a Power Bow +1, with some gear-swapping ranged attack macros to equip Bone Rings (Accuracy -2, Ranged Accuracy +2) and some Fang Arrows (Ranged Accuracy +2) and if your archery is fairly high you can get a nice chunk of damage while the monster is being pulled (and it won't cost you your boost!) and mid-battle if for some reason you happen to lose hate. In fact, even with D archery skills, with proper gear you can do much higher damage with bows at these levels, the problem is the 8-second lapses of time during which you can't do abilities, so you can't use them as a main weapon. A very good alternative to the Ranger-like setup is using Crossbows with Acid Bolts (Defense -15%.) These babies don't only increase your damage but the other melee's as well, and I highly encourage WARs to use them when the DRK or THF don't.

                            Levels 20-30:

WAR/MNK - See above. From 20-25, get a Neckchopper (~30k) if you can afford it. With 39 damage and +5 Accuracy, it's by far the best weapon any job can have at that level if you ask me. Then switch to Plantbane and smack those mandies in Yuhtunga and Yhoator Jungle. Now that Counter is available, you'll be doing even more damage, and at 25 you'll get Double Attack, making you even more powerful than DRKs until 30 (because then they can sub /THF and do highly damaging skillchains with Sneak Attack.) Closing a skillchain with Sturmwind can also be a good source of hate.

WAR/RNG - The level 10 Accuracy Bonus job trait from Rangers gives you Accuracy and Ranged Accuracy +10. This helps you out both as a tank and damage dealer. We already get high TP per swing using Great Axes, with more accuracy you should be able to Shield Break IT Yhoator Mandragora every battle. This is the best damage-dealing sub from 20-30 as well because Sneak Attack isn't available. The yummy accuracy bonus will also help you stick your ranged attacks, including the now-usable Sleep Bolts in cases of emergencies. Other yummy bonuses this combo brings is Precaution (less chances of being detected by monsters,) Widescan to help your party find monsters, Sharpshot, and Piercing Arrow/Split Shot. With enough ranged accuracy, archery/marksmanship, hopefully Sharpshot, maybe a Shield break, and a bit of luck, you won't need to change to Great Sword or Polearm and gimp yourself to take advantage of the uber Distortion skillchains THF can do with SA + Fast Blade. Sadly this combo dies as a damage dealer at 30 because of /THF.

                            Levels 30-50
WAR/MNK - The general strategy applies here as well. Although you might want to hold back if you have a THF in the party so someone else can hold hate temporarily while the THF SATA's onto you.

                            Levels 50/55+
WAR/NIN - This is where WAR/NIN truly shines. With Dual Weild II you get a haste bonus that makes you do great damage and get TP quick with dual axes. Viking Axe gives you extra enmity, and at 55 you get Rampage to boot. You get all that AND blink tanking abilities. Every time the monster hits you, you lose some hate. Needless to say, if the monster hits you less, you're also losing less hate. And of course, with blink tanking you also get hit less so that's another upside to this combo.
