More Defense Then Paladin at Early lvls?

I PT'ed with a Paladin last night and so my first thought was ok ill just damage deal while he tanks , ill be the backup. Well then I realized he wasnt taking hits very well and he didnt know how to time his cures. I asked him what his DEF was just to find out that I had more DEF then him with AND without Protect. I didnt bother checking to see what equipment it is but im pretty sure Pre lvl 20 is early enough to see the difference between jobs PLD/WAR/DRK

He had gimp gear. You have the same defense up until 20, which you can pick up counter, and then at 25, at which point warrior gets defender. You can argueably take hits better until 50 with the right gear. (Keeping hate better however, is another issue entirely.)
