Mithra Warrior viable? (what combinations?)

  • Mithra Warrior viable? (what combinations?)

    Hi everyone! I'm trying to decide a race and job path before I really start playing so that I don't waste too much time.

    I really really prefer the look of Mithra best... however, my gameplay tends to be very offense based, and I like to melee. (I like to run forward and beat the crap out of stuff.)

    Also I'm guessing that my friends who are going to play with me that they are going to want to be the "hanging in the back" types. I may have convinced my husband to be a white mage, and perhaps my other friend will be a dark mage...

    so that leaves me with really having to fill that "tank" spot.

    Can I be a WARRIOR tank type and still be a Mithra? or is another race like Elvaan going to be much more viable? (is being a Mithra going to make it much harder for me??)


    Also I was thinking about combinations for down the road and I was considering perhaps
    DRG/WAR or SAM/WAR, etc.... are either of those somehow "bad"...? DRG look like so much fun but I keep hearing that in later levels they are really weak and not worth the time. Is that true?

    or should I try for DRK/WAR or some combination of that?

    I would love some advice before I waste hours on lvling up a character!

    Mithra makes an ok warrior - Mostly suited for damage role tho.

      A mithra tank (other than NIN blink tank, which warriors can't really do until level 74 if that) needs to put extra effort into VIT gear. I have +10 VIT on my PLD right now *before* food, and that's only level 21 (two stamina rings +2 +2, power sandals +3, warriors belt +2, legionnaire's subligar +1; at 27 I'll get savage gauntlets for another +4, but I may ditch the legionnaire's subligar for chain hose at 24 if the DEF difference is large enough to compensate for the loss of VIT).

      Other races could wear this stuff (except the savage gauntlets which are awesome for PLD and great for tanking WAR), but how many take the time and effort?

      Power sandals are a pain to get unless you have a WHM or RDM with sneak and invisible (you can use sneak oil and prism powder but then it costs money), and they're Rare EX so you have to get your own. Legionnaire's subligar is Bastokan conquest gear if you have a Bastokan friend, the rest buy at AH. Stamina rings are expensive but you can get amber for reasonable cost which are +1 each.

      If you are tanking as PLD or WAR, get a shield. Not only does it raise your DEF, you also block some hits with it. Mithra dodge, parry and block better than any other race, take advantage of it. But don't neglect DEF and VIT gear because you will still get hit pretty often.

      More than any other role, a tank must be well equipped. You need a good weapon so you can deal enough damage to get and keep hate (provoke only goes so far), you need good armor and +VIT gear so you won't take too much damage when you do get hit. A damage dealer can neglect his armor, a mage can neglect his weapon *and* armor if he has up to date spells (not saying they should, but they *can*); any slacking in gear by the tank will slow down the party or worse, get them killed.

      And one more thing - don't be one of those bad WARs that wields a one-handed sword. :mad: One handed swords do weak damage, have inferior weaponskills and WAR aren't even all that skilled at them. The only jobs that should use them regularly are PLD (which are actually good at them), low level THF (for sneak/fast blade) and sometimes RDM (whose only real alternative for an actual weapon is daggers). Occasionally NIN or /NIN will want a particular sword in their off hand for stat bonuses (mithran scimitar for THF/NIN for example).

      Tanking WAR should use axe and shield, damage dealing WAR can use a variety of two-handed weapons (great axe is often best but great sword, polearm and scythe have their uses) or dual wield axes if /NIN. Carry several weapons and put them in your search comment and wise parties will prefer you to other WARs (where they don't know if they're getting a 1h sword gimp or not).

        thanks so much for the in depth response!

        Ok, well my next question would be, are there any advantages "persay" of being a Mithra WAR tank? I don't really mind having to make up for some of Mithra's shortcomings, I'm just curious.... does Mithra's dodging and speed help out a tank to kinda makeup for some of the lack of strength and defense?

          Tho i'm not sure about this... i thiiink our agility helps us parry more along with evading hits, because i sure do parry a lot and it really helps me make the most of blink. Dex is nice for extra criticals and hate.

              Hume/Elvaan/Galka make the best warriors.

              Elvaan are stronger then humes, but don't hit as much.
              Galkas have more health then Elvaan, aren't as strong, but lands more hits.

                i see that galka and elvaan would be better has tank because they have higher hp and vit.

                but then mithra war need to focus more on vit when tanking where other races would need more agi. Dex help a little bit higher acc, but post 60 with all the acc gear available you won't see much a diff because you will hit the acc cap on some monsters especially with aggressor on.

                I play has a dmg dealer in my group and i do fine on it as a mithra war because i put more +str equip while others would prefer to go with +dex/acc items.

                I like to play war over advanced jobs because they are much more versatile, i can use almost any weapon in game and fill the role of a tank or dmg dealer with a simple change in equipment.

                  I'm just repeating this simple equation again:

                  Player skill + equipment > race.

                  I've had no problem's filling either tanking or DD role, and my equip is basic.
                  Some of the highest lvl war's posting here are mithra as well. :p
