I was thinking that if some people believe that war whm works, why not war/blm? I still want to tank but be able to do some dmg, im goin human and was thinking about a scythe for the war? i heard that blm gives more mp than whm so why not? i just need a little input before i decide, and i was planning on grouping not solo'ing. thanks for any input.

From the people that you heard about WAR/(any mage job) being decent, trust me it won't work if your serious about partying. Please know that the ANY nuking or enfeeble magic that you get when subbing a mage job will do crap damage,be resisted, and make a DRK look like a heavy nuker -.-.
When it comes to using a Scythe as a main weapon its much better to go with a Axe for a 1 handed weapon(screw sword ;P) and Great Axe for being your main 2 handed weapon.WAR misses out on the majority of the best Scythe Weapon Skills.
Great Axes first WS,Shield Break(lowers the targets evasion) is far more useful in exp parties early on.A better subjob to use would be MNK which is very good from lvl 1-75.Other subjobs become more useful as you level such as NIN at lvl 20+,THF at lvl 30,and SAM at lvl 60.All honesty if I saw a WAR/BLM looking for a party at any lvl I wouldnt even bother inviting them :mad:WAR AF2

Consult http://www.ausystem.org/~aushacho/gbox/ff/skill-e.html for a list of skillcaps and which classes get which weaponskills.

I've actually partied with a war/blm once.. in Yuhtunga Jungle. The only spell they used was Blaze Spikes, and since the Mandragoras are monks, it seemed to be doing a good amount of damage. Its a funny combo but outside the spikes and warp, no real use

I realize this thread is a little old but I just joined the boards and have been reading everything. I just thought it was interesting that on my server, I saw a warrior around level 64 w/blm subbed. He had that Greataxe that gives STR and INT as well as some MP if I remember right. A month or so later I see him again with his same BLM sub and now he's level 72.
Subjob capped so he's either a big fan of -ga farming or it really works for him. I know that Dia and Bio seem to always stick regardless of skill level but I don't know enough about other black magics. If the elemental enfeebles are the same way (doubt it, I'll go fight some elementals and see if I resist), then casting choke/frost seems like it might be useful.
The same for Drain/Aspir: I don't think drain misses, but your capped skill will significantly decrease the amount of HP/MP drained. ALthough I suppose Elemental Seal + Drain would be nice every 10 minutes or so. Again, I don't know enough about black magic to be certain but if I'm right about the above stuff + having 3 Spikes spells to choose from, seems like it might be doable.
Oh yeah, I suppose your subbed elemental skill would make it so that even those aforementioned enfeebles wouldn't stick very long at best."And if he left off dreaming about you, where do you suppose you'd be?"

It is only good for Warp. I don't mean playing with WAR/BLM, I mean jumping into your moghouse or doing a quest, then warping.
A BLM does damage through unresisted spells. To be unresisted, you must have high elemental skill/INT (which you don't since BLM is 1/2 the level of the current monsters). To actually cast the spells, you have to have a mana pool (which you don't since WAR doesn't naturally have a mana pool).
At my level, quite often a DRK could have swung his scythe for better damage than his magic bursted elemental spell. Again, the elemental skill/INT is not there.
The ONLY reason why WAR/WHM works is out of sheer necessity. When we had the influx of new players, mage jobs were rather scarce. To counter this, the players responded by subbing WHM to allow for the 5 melee and 1 mage parties. This was inefficient, but wasn't impractical since they were now able to level. Their WHM was almost always underleveled which further shows their concern for being able to level up to their advanced jobs, as opposed to taking their current job seriously.
I actually had a party the other night with a rank 10 JP ranger who originally started the party as RNG/NIN. Our backline consisted of a BRD/WHM and a RDM/BLM. We tried something and found our healing power to be lacking. In response, this well-played rank 10 player subbed WHM. Incredible experience for the low levels that we were. As I said, necessity is why it works.

Level your blm sub needs to be to cast warp without swapping in MP gear:
Galka: ~33/34
Elvaan: 27
Mithra/Hume: 23
Taru: 17!
Anyway, war/blm...big no-no. Any mage sub under a melee job (or vice versa)...big no-no. On my most recent (second and third) trips through the Elshimos, oddly enough, I grouped with more mage/melee than melee/mage. I grouped with probably 15 different rdms leveling thf from 25-33 and warrior from 30-33, and not a one of them cast enfeebles without being told to. I think only two of the rdms had a mage sub, also. The few warrior/mages I grouped with usually used their MP the first fight, then didn't rest for MP again until we had downtime (anywhere from 10 minutes to 2 hours later).61 MNK | 37 WAR | 37 THF | 35 RDM | 29 BLM | 25 WHM
Mithra retired November 2004 - Hume started November 2006
28 WAR | 18 MNK | 15 WHM | 12 BLM
