DrK help

I am a level 19 warrior and am trying to get to the dark knight job yet i am not sure of what they can do or they're attack so any help would be grateful....

If you want to be a dark first start using Great swords and Scythes. Make sure that you provoke and dont let the monster hit the mages. Buy mithkabobs and only use berserk when you arent tanking.

Don't use a sythe or greatsword, those can easily be skilled up when you're leveling DRK. Use a Great Axe (damage dealing) or Axe (tanking, those Gaxe is still great when tanking). There is nothing better then a Shield Break at the start of the fight, followed by awesome damage afterwards (plus more accuracy, since WARs have A in it).

Since you are going to be needing both GS and Scythe, you can use them. You will also be able to lv them both, from scratch using your Drk so it isn't necessary. Great Axe is a War's best choice.

A tank is someone designed by a group to soak dmg and retain hate when others deal dmg.

Drk get access to the best armors and since war often tank with a great axe, i don't see why drk couldn't tank with a scythe or great sword.

On a side, i'm pretty sure a drk would be better than a war to keep hate, especially from 40 till war gets his full af.

As a war, use axe and great axe, you'll have plenty of time to skill up great sword/scythe when you become a drk. Great axe war is the highest dmg dealer from 23 to 30, you can take this as a preview of your drk job.

Also you can use a great axe as a drk even if it's a B+ rated weapon. Even if sturmwind lost the tp gain advantage in last patch, it is still the hardest hitting ws till drk gets to 60 and get 200 skill in scythe or great sword. Don't forget the utility of a shield break also.

The only reason drk outdamage war is soul eater, otherwise the dmg per hit will be similar. Either when i'm tanking as a war, most drk don't use their soul eater.

Sure DRK gets similar armor, but think about it for a second. Many DRK have their gear suited for attack and accuracy, not to mention their defense/hp lowering abilites. A DRK will want to have Berserk on the full time, and almost all the times he can. Souleater won't be used to often, but it does get used. Last Resort...well, it gets used, but the soft provoke effect + lowering defense isn't that helpful with tanking. Good DRK has 2 Sniper Rings later on, that lowers their defense. Not just DRK, but ALL damage dealing melee people. If the WAR isn't the tank, they'll use these; if they are the tank, they'll switch to some other rings, Phalanx maybe, or a str ring?

Sure, at the beginning levels DRK can tank a few shots, but later on, it's highly recommended not to. Read the DRK board sometime, and they complain a lot on how they sometimes grab aggro for a while from a bad tanker. Truth being, DRK isn't suited to be a tanker. At most, they might take the first few hits for a fuidama set up. They can keep hate, but they don't want to because it will kill them.

As for the first poster's question, you can use a Greatsword or Scythe if you want to. I'd recommend using those when you're not in an exp party though. As a warrior, I tried it and I didn't like it. There were too many people who were using similar things, and not many warriors using axes/great axes at the time (like how there's still an abundance of sword using warriors). Use whatever you feel like. Just don't go subbing a BLM and use a scythe/great sword trying to pose as a DRK.

I strongly suggest that you level your Greatsword ability before reaching lvl 30 to do the Drk quest. For the Drk quest you need to kill 100 enemies with a EXTREMELY weak/slow sword called the Chaosbringer, its damage is 3 and its delay is 666, very bad. If you level your greatsword ability some... at LEAST to lvl 10 so you get the WS, you will be able to kill faster which will really help on the quest... god i hate that quest ^^. You don't have to listen to me but I suggest that you take along a greatsword for when you are a backup tank (or a scythe if you're greatsword skill is high enough for the quest), and use a shield/sword/axe/whatever 1h weapon you want when tanking which will add to your defense. I also hear the great axes are good but I just dont like the look of them ^^. Anyway, hope this helps!

P.S - Try Drk/War till at least lvl 20 Drk... then you could switch to Sam subjob for some TP bonuses if you want... or even go thief which will help you evade/hit more often/get that precious gil you need for equipment/food/spells. (Never sub dragoon... ill behead you if you do... you don't get a wyvern).

Lvl up Great Axe & Great Sword I would say, maybe Axe/Shield while your a Warrior if you need to tank.
Great Axe has Sturmwind which is a very powerful WS, and Drks can use alot of good Great Axes, so it may be a better choice early on since the Scythe WS suck :D

I strongly agree with Fudd about leveling Gsword up. You do not want to be lvling it while you're swinging Chaosbringer... it is painful.

However, bear in mind that if you kill something with a weaponskill, it won't count.
